BACKGROUND: Extramedullary hematopoiesis in the adult life is usually associated with hematological disorders. It can often occur in several organs under certain pathological conditions, including the spleen, liver, and skin, which are normal sites during the embryogenesis, the skin being very uncommon.
CASE REPORT: A case of extramedullary hematopoiesis in a granuloma pyogenicum at the anterior aspect of the right thigh of a 31-year-old Japanese man is reported.
RESULTS: Histologic examination revealed an ulcerated polypoid lesion composed of numerous newly formed capillaries and a myxoid e

A 2-year-old amerasian male with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (Christ-Siemens-Touraine Syndrome) was admitted for status epilepticus and Mycobacteria avium-intracellulare infection. A computed tomography scan of the head revealed a mass thought to be a subdural hematoma. The patient died following overwhelming Mycobacteria avium-intracellular and Pseudomonas aeruginosa sepsis. Autopsy revealed extensive extramedullary hematopoiesis of the dura forming a tumor-like thickening with focal subdural hemorrhage. To our knowledge, this is the first report of extramedullary hematopoiesis of the cra

An immature neonate surviving for 45 minutes showed a generalized hydrops and hepatosplenomegaly unassociated with blood incompatibility. A marked activation of extramedullary haematopoiesis was observed not only in its liver and spleen, but also in the interstitium of the lungs, pancreas, kidneys, and adrenal glands. In addition, extensive necrosis of the brain and diffuse nonsuppurative myositis and myocarditis were found. All the changes were due to congenital toxoplasmosis, which has been confrimed by the findings of occasional pseudocysts within the placenta, by the result of the parasito

Cutaneous extramedullary hematopoiesis is a rare manifestation of chronic myeloproliferative processes, mainly chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis. In adults, it manifests as macules, papules, nodules, and ulcers on the trunk. The lesions usually appear soon after diagnosis and the possibility of a relationship between splenectomy and the appearance of extramedullary foci of hematopoiesis is still debated. Diagnosis is based on histopathology showing an infiltrate with different combinations of myeloid and erythroid cell precursors and megakaryocytes. Symptomatic treatment is provided alongside t

Extramedullary hematopoiesis is manifested by several clinical hematological disorders. Its localization to presacral space as mass is extremely rare. We report one such case in a patient with hereditary spherocytosis. In the appropriate clinical setting when the imaging appearances are typical, biopsy may not be necessary for diagnosis.

We present the first report of extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) in an encephalocele. The patient was a new-born with semilobar holoprosencephaly, a frontoethmoidal encephalocele, and a large subdural hematoma. The encephalocele appeared as a hemorrhagic mass, protruding from the forehead to cover the right eye, without involvement of the sinuses or nasopharynx. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging studies ruled out other forms of holoprosencephaly and confirmed the continuity of the brain with the extruded mass. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the presence of an atrophic epi

Extramedullary hematopoiesis is a characteristic feature of hepatoblastoma (HB). We investigated 15 HB to characterize intratumoral hematopoietic foci and to find clues to the pathophysiology of their formation. By conventional histology and immunohistochemistry, we found erythroblasts in all and megakaryocytes in 10 of the HB, whereas granulocyte and monocyte precursor cells could not be identified in hematopoietic foci of any tumor. Only a minority of erythropoietic cells in these foci contained fetal Hb (HbF). We recently found that HB cells produce IL-1 beta and thus stimulate stromal cell

The translocator protein 18 kDa (TSPO) is expressed in immune cells such as macrophages and hematopoietic progenitors and is involved in modulating innate immune responses. However, a role of TSPO in postsepsis immune dysregulation remains unclear, particularly in the spleen as one of the major immune organs. Here, we investigated the role of TSPO in splenic immune responses following sepsis using TSPO knockout mice 17 days after sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture. Results showed that enhanced anxiety-like and depressive-like behaviors as postseptic sequelae were positively correlat

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic multicentric Castleman disease (iMCD) is a rare inflammatory disorder mediated by excessive proinflammatory cytokine signaling, most notably by interleukin 6 (IL-6). IL-6-induced extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) has been reported in murine models of iMCD. Herein we present four cases of iMCD with EMH in humans.
CASE SERIES: The index case is a 24-year-old white woman who presented with pancytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly, and diffuse lymphadenopathy (LAD) with EMH in core lymph node biopsies. We then searched ACCELERATE, a Castleman disease (CD) natural history registry,

In fibrous dysplasia/McCune-Albright syndrome (FD/MAS), bone and bone marrow are, to varying degrees, replaced by fibro-osseous tissue typically devoid of hematopoietic marrow. Despite the extensive marrow replacement in severely affected patients, bone marrow failure is not commonly associated with FD/MAS. We present a 14-year-old girl with FD/MAS, who developed pancytopenia and extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) with no identified cause, in the setting of iatrogenic thyrotoxicosis and hyperparathyroidism. Pancytopenia, requiring monthly blood transfusions, persisted despite multiple strategi

We report a case of extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) in uterine leiomyoma and associated numerous intravascular thrombi. A 29-year-old nulliparous female presented with heavy vaginal bleeding and a hematocrit of 22%. No bone marrow biopsy has been performed. She had a history of uterine leiomyomata and menorrhagia for a year. A transvaginal ultrasound confirmed the presence of a uterine leiomyoma. The patient was treated conservatively with oral contraceptive pills due to desire for fertility. However, she continued to have heavy vaginal bleeding and developed bilateral upper extremity deep

We report incidental extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) in breasts of 2 patients following neoadjuvant chemotherapy for locally advanced breast cancer. Neither of the patients had a history of hematologic disorders. After chemotherapy, one of the patients had a complete pathologic response and the other had residual carcinoma. In both cases, EMH was mostly seen as myelopoiesis in a background of chemotherapy-induced changes. In the patient with residual carcinoma, EMH was observed in the contralateral prophylactic mastectomy specimen. EMH should be considered a diagnostic pitfall in the differ

An original case is reported: spinal cord compression due to extramedullary hematopoiesis of the epidural space, related to Paget's disease of bone, successfully treated by surgery. Extramedullary hematopoiesis, usually occurring in cases of hematological disease, can also complicate Paget's disease, probably by bone effraction mechanism. A review of literature has found 5 other cases of extramedullary hematopoiesis occurring in Paget's disease, without hematological disease. Medullar scintigraphy (Indium111, Technetium99 Sulfur colloid) can confirm the diagnosis after X-ray findings, without

A case of extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) with a massive mediastinal mass in a 72-year-old woman with hereditary spherocytosis is reported. Several cases of EMH have been described in nonsplenectomized adults with hereditary spherocytosis, and it is thought to be a consequence of long-term stimulation of erythropoiesis. The exact mechanism remains controversial. EMH should be considered in the differential diagnosis of an asymptomatic paravertebral mass.

4 cases of extramedullary hematopoiesis (EH) in the posterior mediastinum in patients affected with serious chronic anemia are presented. The contribution of conventional radiology and computed tomography (CT) to the assessment of an exact diagnosis, is discussed. The CT images are above all characterized by the presence of typical bilateral, asymmetrical paravertebral hyperdense masses (about 45 HU). Besides, a striated aspect of the vertebral bodies is common. For a rather sure diagnosis of EH in patients with chronic anemia, a conventional chest X-ray and CT of the thorax is sufficient. Bio

BACKGROUND: Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder characterized by defective hemoglobin production, leading to chronic anemia and the necessity for lifelong blood transfusions. Extramedullary hematopoiesis is a compensatory mechanism in which blood-producing tissue forms outside the bone marrow. The occurrence of extramedullary hematopoiesis as a pelvic mass is rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 44-year-old woman with β-thalassemia major who was found to have a pelvic fat-containing mass incidentally on imaging. A diagnostic laparotomy revealed a highly vascular mass. Compl

BACKGROUND: We report a case series of extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) diagnosed from the fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedure. Unanticipated EMH is a markedly rare diagnosis that typically presents as a solitary mass of undetermined significance. As such, knowledge of cytopathologic characteristics as well as clinical and radiologic correlates of EMH is paramount.
METHOD AND MATERIAL: A total of 16 EMH cytopathologic cases were seen at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in the past 22 years.
RESULTS: Median age at diagnosis was 61 years and there was no gender bias (male-to-female ratio: 1:1).

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is usually a microscopic finding. However, it may present as a mass-forming lesion making it amenable to fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). When mass-forming EMH occurs, it can simulate a neoplasm clinically and radiologically. Additionally, the megakaryocytes can mimic malignant neoplastic cells, particularly if EMH is not a considered diagnosis. We report six cases of mass-forming EMH diagnosed by FNAB and evaluate the utility of FNAB in diagnosing EMH. Four patients had prior diagnoses of hematologic disorders, one patient had malignant mastocytosis who
