Two strains of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus, which differ in virulence for mice, have been studied for their production of and sensitivity to chick and mouse interferon. Little interferon was produced by chick cells in response to the virulent Trinidad strain or the attenuated TC-83 strain without either aging or priming the cultures. Consistent differences in the production of chick interferon were not found between the two strains. In the present study we investigated the role of monocytes and of their soluble products (prostaglandins and hydrogen peroxide) in the modulation of the immune response in 50 untreated patients with Hodgkin's disease (HD) compared with a group of healthy donors. Sera obtained during a dengue-2 epidemic from individuals with primary or secondary group B arbovirus infections contained cross-reactive antibody against several viruses in this group. Hemagglutination-inhibition antibody titers of the immunoglobulin M fractions from these sera revealed a rise in antibody specific for dengue-2. The acute and convalescent sera in over half of the secondary infection group also had low-level unchanging immunoglobulin M antibody titers to yellow fever which implicated yellow fever immunization as the primary infection.

The numbers of pokeweed mitogen (PWM)-induced IgM-, IgG- and IgA-secreting cells (SC) in mononuclear cell cultures from patients with seropositive and seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were reduced compared to those of control persons. Significant numbers of IgM rheumatoid factor (RF)-SC were only found in PWM-induced cultures from patients with seropositive RA (median: 7 IgM RF-SC/10(6) and controls greater than or equal to 50 years (median: 6 IgM RF-SC/10(6). The ratio of IgM RF-SC to total IgM-SC (RF/IgM-SC ratio) was significantly higher in patients with seropositive RA (median: 0.6%)

Polyclonal B cell activation occurred in 3 patients following treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin (i.v. Ig) for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The interference of alpha-endorphin with the primary antibody response to ovalbumin (OA) of human blood lymphocytes in vitro was investigated. It was found that alpha-endorphin can block the OA-specific IgM-PFC response in a concentration of 0.05 to 0.5 microM. Mononuclear cell suspension from synovial fluids of 13 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 5 patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis contained on average of 1.5 and 1.3% cytotoxic plaque-forming cells, respectively, when tested against a monolayer of antibody-sensitized sheep erythrocytes.
