Viet Nam faces a significant burden of viral hepatitis-associated liver disease, but the contribution of HDV, the most severe form of viral hepatitis, remains underinvestigated. HDV is substantial in the Northern and Central regions, but has not been documented in the South of Viet Nam. To investigate HDV prevalence and its association with severe liver disease in Southern Viet Nam, we used the standardized assay (LIAISON® XL Anti-HDV) to detect HDV antibodies (anti-HDV) in 721 HBsAg positive individuals with hepatitis flare (n = 158), liver cirrhosis (LC) (181), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)

Hepatitis Delta virus is the smallest known human virus, exploiting the HBV surface proteins (HBsAg) for the release of its progeny and de novo entry into hepatocytes. Ever growing evidence have highlighted the existence of multiple mechanisms underlying HDV persistence including integrated HBV-DNA as a source of HBsAg production and the capability of the HDV genome to propagate through cell proliferation, thus supporting a potential HDV persistence even in the absence of HBV. Chronic HDV-infection causes the most severe form of viral hepatitis, leading to the development of cirrhosis in 15% o

On the basis of historical studies, hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection is considered uncommon in the United Kingdom (UK) and mainly confined to intravenous drug users. In order to assess the current prevalence of HDV co-infection in patients with chronic hepatitis B (HBV), a retrospective analysis was performed of 962 consecutive HBV-infected adult patients referred to King's College Hospital between January 1st 2000 and March 31st 2006. The 82 subjects positive for HDV antibody (8.5%) had a similar age to those without HDV (median 36 years, interquartile range 30-47, vs. 35 years, 29-43).

To identify hepatitis delta virus (HDV) genetic variability and its circulating genotypes amongst infected Iranian patients, 25 patients with positive anti-HDV status from different parts of Iran were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. A portion of the HDV delta antigen was amplified, sequenced, and subjected to molecular and phylogenetic analysis. Clinical features and virological markers were evaluated. HDV RNA could be detected in 88% of anti-HDV positive cases (22 patients) with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and liver cirrhosis. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that all Iran

The objective of this study was to estimate the presence of hepatitis delta virus RNA in chronically HBV-infected patients from northern Poland. Three out of 63 studied samples (4.8%) were positive in a qualitative test for total antibodies to HDV antigen. Five samples (7.9%) turned out to be HDV-RNA-positive by RT-PCR, four of them were sequenced in the region of L-HDAg, and phylogenetic analysis was performed. All four examined samples belonged to genotype I. Two RNA-positive/anti-HD-negative samples possessed a few uncommon nucleotide substitution sites within the L-HDAg sequence, which cou

Expression of hepatitis delta virus (HDV) markers was investigated in sera from 310 patients with acute hepatitis, 63 chronic hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers and 76 drug addicts positive for at least one serological hepatitis B virus (HBV) marker. Acute HDV infection occurred in 17.1% of the patients with acute hepatitis. Among 40 cases of coinfection, hepatitis was severe in ten and fulminant in three. Only two of the 13 superinfected patients showed a severe hepatitis, but a high percentage (78%) of them developed chronic hepatitis one year after HDV infection. Also in our area

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) has a unique replication process that requires coinfection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Treatment is currently limited to interferon therapy. The role of potent nucleos(t)ide analogues active against HBV has not been well examined in chronic delta hepatitis (CDH).
METHODS: HIV-positive patients with CDH attending our hospital were identified and longitudinally studied. Serum HBV DNA, HDV RNA and HIV RNA, treatment regimens, and biochemical and serological markers were assessed at yearly intervals. Liver fibrosis was measured by transient elastography d

To evaluate the profile of hepatitis D virus replication and the corresponding immunoresponse after acute hepatitis D virus infection, sera from 50 patients with acute hepatitis D (36 with acute hepatitis B virus-hepatitis D virus coinfection and 14 HBsAg carriers with hepatitis D virus superinfection) were investigated for the presence of hepatitis D virus RNA and other serological hepatitis D virus markers. During the first week after onset of symptoms, hepatitis D virus RNA was detected by spot hybridization with a similar frequency among patients with coinfection (64%) and those with super

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a satellite virus of the hepatitis B virus (HBV), with a single-stranded and rod-like circular RNA encoding only one protein, the hepatitis delta antigen (HDAg). Lacking its own replicase, the highly self-complementary HDV RNA hijacks host RNA polymerase II (Pol-II), eliciting a unique and incompletely understood RNA-templated transcriptional activity. Because transcription by Pol-II is regulated at multiple steps by various cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), we investigated whether CDKs contribute to HDV replication.
APPROACH AND RESULTS: Usi

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis delta (HDV) is the most severe form of chronic viral hepatitis, with rapid progression to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, and remains neglected in the Amazon Basin. The state of Acre, in the Western Brazilian Amazon, is endemic for HDV, with a high prevalence of genotype 3 (HDV-3). This study aimed to analyze epidemiological data, quantify HDV RNA, identify genotypes, and describe the phylogeny and phylogeography of HDV in Acre.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included patients positive for HBsAg and anti-HDV under follow-up at the Specialized Assistance Serv

Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a small RNA virus which needs Hepatitis B Surface Antigen for its envelope, for entry into hepatocytes and secretion. HDV chronic infection affects around 12 million people worldwide. HDV infection is believed to be the most severe form of viral hepatitis, with a high risk of developing cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Pegylated interferons has been used and recommended by guidelines, although not approved, with low efficacy and poor tolerability. Bulevirtide (entry inhibitor) has been recently conditionally approved by the European Medicines Agency. These

In this study, an in vitro infection model for the hepatitis delta virus (HDV) was used to evaluate the antiviral effects of phosphorothioate nucleic acid polymers (NAPs) and investigate their mechanism of action. The results show that NAPs inhibit HDV infection at concentrations less than 4 μM in cultures of differentiated human hepatoma cells. NAPs were shown to be active at viral entry but inactive postentry on HDV RNA replication. Inhibition was independent of the NAP nucleotide sequence but dependent on both size and amphipathicity of the polymer. NAP antiviral activity was effective agai

HDV infection may occur within a primary HBV infection (co-infection) or by sub sequent acquisition ofthe virus in patients with chronic hepatitis B (superinfection). Acute HDV infection is rarely diagnosed. Since cero conversion usually takes place about six weeks after viral infection, early diagnosis requires the use of direct diagnostic techniques, such as antigen HD V (HDAg) detection, or genomic amplification by means of molecular biology methods (RT-PCR). Here were port the case of a patient with chronic HBV infection that develops a severe acute hepatitis due to VHD superinfec- tion on

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been implicated in the development of hepatocellular and hematopoietic malignancies. We describe a patient with chronic hepatitis B who developed hepatosplenic gamma delta T-cell lymphoma. A 45-year-old woman presented with marked hepatosplenomegaly and hepatic failure during the course of chronic hepatitis B. Peripheral blood examination revealed 57% abnormal lymphoid cells which expressed the gamma delta T-cell receptor. The cytogenetic analysis of tumor cells showed an abnormal karyotype; 47, XX, -13, +2mar in all 20 metaphases examined. A clonal rearra

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is associated with worse liver-related outcomes. We aim to comprehensively evaluate HDV testing, diagnosis, and liver-related outcomes among a national cohort of US Veterans with CHB.
METHODS: US Veterans with CHB from 2010 to 2023 were evaluated to determine trends in HDV testing (anti-HDV antibody, HDV RNA) and proportion positive among those tested. HDV positive patients were 1:2 propensity score matched to CHB patients who were HDV negative to evaluate incidence (per 100,000 person-years)

Hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection plays an important role in liver diseases. However, the molecular epidemiology and impact of HDV infection in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) remain uncertain in Vietnam. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genotype distribution of HDV among HBsAg-positive patients in Central Vietnam. 250 CHB patients were tested for HDV using newly established HDV-specific RT-PCR techniques. HDV genotypes were determined by direct sequencing. Of the 250 patients 25 (10%) had detectable copies of HDV viral RNA. HDV-2 was predominant (20/25; 80%) follow

In 1997, a 27-year-old homosexual man contracted acute hepatitis B that developed into chronic hepatitis. Because of repeated flares, administration of lamivudine was started in March 2002. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA immediately decreased, but the serum level of alanine aminotransferase gradually increased. Drug-induced hepatitis due to lamivudine was excluded. It was suspected that the progression of liver damage was caused by hepatitis delta virus (HDV), because the patient was positive for both anti-HDV antibody and HDV RNA. Co-infection of HDV should be considered a possibility if liver i
