Hepatitis E, caused by infection with hepatitis E virus (HEV), is a common cause of acute hepatitis in areas with poor sanitation. The virus has four genotypes with one serotype: genotypes 1 and 2 exclusively infect humans, whereas genotypes 3 and 4 also infect other animals, particularly pigs. In endemic areas, both large outbreaks of acute hepatitis as well as sporadic cases occur frequently. These cases are usually due to genotype 1 or 2 HEV and are predominantly caused by fecal-oral transmission, usually through contamination of drinking water; contaminated food, materno-fetal (vertical sp

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is often triggered by a preceding bacterial or viral infection. Occasionally, it has been observed in association with acute hepatitis A, B and C, and three cases have been previously described in India in which GBS was associated with acute hepatitis E. A molecular mimicry mechanism is supposed to be involved in the pathogenesis of GBS triggered by infectious agents, although the nature of the shared epitopes has not been characterized in most instances, including that in the case of hepatotropic viruses. We report a case of GBS following acute hepatitis E in a E

In 2008, acute hepatitis E infection was confirmed in 4 passengers returning to the United Kingdom after a world cruise. Epidemiologic investigation showed that of 789 persons who provided blood samples, 195 (25%) were seropositive, 33 (4%) had immunoglobulin [Ig] M levels consistent with recent acute infection (11 of these persons were symptomatic), and 162 (21%) had IgG only, consistent with past infection. Passenger mean age was 68 years. Most (426/789, 54%) passengers were female, yet most with acute infection (25/33, 76%) were male. Sequencing of RNA from 3 case-patients identified hepati

Hepatitis E is an infectious viral disease with clinical and morphologic features of acute hepatitis. Although HEV infection is endemic in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast and Central Asia, a large outbreak of hepatitis E was identified in China. Smaller outbreaks have been observed in the Middle East, northern and western parts of Africa, and Mexico. Sporadic hepatitis E also has been observed in several countries. In nonendemic regions, the sporadic cases of hepatitis E are almost always associated with travel to HEV-endemic regions. In Korea, there has been no report on hepatitis E. Recen

Israel is endemic for hepatitis E virus (HEV), the causative agent of enteric non-A, non-B hepatitis. Transmission is via the feco-oral route but the possibility of transmission through blood transfusion has been raised. This question was addressed by examining sera from 188 hemophilic patients in Israel, screening was performed with an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for antibody against hepatitis E virus (anti-HEV) and confirmed with a neutralization test. Sixteen patients (9%) were seropositive for anti-HEV. A statistically significant difference was not found between the seroprevalence in this gr

Diagnosis of viral hepatitis is based on epidemiologic data (information about travels, blood transfusions, contacts with persons suffering from hepatitis, etc.) and on results of physical examination and laboratory investigations. Usually, serologic and genomic analysis lead to the specific proof of the viral etiology: HAV, HBV/HDV, HCV and HEV. If these infections are not detected, nonviral causes of hepatopathy should be investigated (i.e. toxic, pharmaco-toxic, metabolic, immunologic, etc.).

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection causes acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, particularly in compromised hosts, and various extrahepatic manifestations. HEV infection is reportedly associated with biliary-pancreatic diseases, such as gallstones, cholangitis, choledocholithiasis, and acute pancreatitis. Severe jaundice and prolonged cholestasis are also atypical manifestations of HEV infection. The mechanism and genes involved in cholestasis, namely sinusoidal uptake of blood, bile salt synthesis and secretion from hepatocytes to the canaliculus, have been elucidated. HEV infection triggers sev

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a significant public health concern, particularly in resource-limited and conflict-affected settings. While often self-limiting, HEV infection poses severe risks for pregnant women contracted with genotype 1 or 2, leading to high maternal mortality, and can cause chronic infection in immunocompromised individuals.
AREAS COVERED: This review examines the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and vaccine landscape of HEV, highlighting licensed and investigational candidates. We discuss HEV 239 vaccine the only licensed HEV vaccine which has shown high e

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a major cause of acute hepatitis. HEV genotypes 1 and 2 are associated with oro-faecal epidemics and fulminant hepatitis in pregnant women. HEV genotypes 3 and 4 are a zoonosis transmitted by uncooked pork. Infection is usually spontaneously resolutive. Chronic hepatitis may occur in immunocompromised patients. Extrahepatic disease is also possible. Prevention is based on hygiene, especially in high-risk patients, and access to safe drinking water for all. A recombinant vaccine against HEV has been developed and is currently being validated by the WHO.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a leading cause of acute hepatitis worldwide. Hepatitis E is an enterically transmitted zoonotic disease that causes large waterborne epidemic outbreaks in developing countries and has become an increasing public-health concern in industrialized countries. In this setting, the infection is usually acute and self-limiting in immunocompetent individuals, although chronic cases in immunocompromised patients have been reported, frequently associated with several extrahepatic manifestations. Moreover, extrahepatic manifestations have also been reported in immunocompetent

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections have been associated with various neurological disorders, including individual cases with Bell's palsy. Nonetheless, systematic studies in the latter are lacking. Therefore, this retrospective study systematically screened a cohort of patients with Bell's palsy for an acute HEV infection.
METHODS: Overall, 104 patients with Bell's palsy treated in our clinic between 2008 and 2018 were identified. Serum samples were analyzed for anti-HEV immunoglobulin (Ig)M and IgG antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Additionally, s

Every year, there are an estimated 20 million hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections worldwide, leading to an estimated 3.3 million symptomatic cases of hepatitis E. HEV is largely circulating in the west and is associated with several hepatic and extrahepatic diseases. HEV Genotype 1 and 2 infections are waterborne and causative for epidemics in the tropics, while genotype 3 and 4 infections are zoonotic diseases and are mainly transmitted by ingestion of undercooked pork in industrialized nations. The clinical course of these infections differs: genotype 1 and 2 infection can cause acute illness

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the most common cause of acute viral hepatitis worldwide. The systematic use of improved tools for diagnosing and genotyping has completely changed our understanding of the epidemiology and clinical consequences of HEV infection. Most cases of HEV in Europe arise from infected animals such as pigs, wild boar, deer and rabbits. Zoonotic HEV genotypes (HEV genotypes 3-8) are mainly food-borne or transmitted by direct contact, but recent data suggest that infection can also be water-borne or even iatrogenic throught contamined blood products. HEV-3 is the most prevalent

Hepatitis E is a major concern to public health, it is estimated that 44,000 people die annually due to hepatitis E. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the most common cause of acute viral hepatitis in the world. HEV has been found with 7 genotypes, only 4 can infect humans. Genotypes 1 and 2 are major causes of the epidemic and endemic acute hepatitis in developing countries. In the poor hygienic conditions, these genotypes are obligate human pathogens transmitted between humans by the fecal-oral route and via contaminated water. On the contrary, in developed countries, genotypes 3 and 4 are of zoono

Acute hepatitis E virus infections occurred during the third trimester in 2 pregnant women in France who sought treatment with nonspecific symptoms or asymptomatic elevation of liver enzymes. Infection cleared quickly in both women. We detected no hepatitis E RNA in 1 newborn's feces at 3 weeks of age.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is responsible for more than 50% of acute viral hepatitis cases in endemic countries. Approximately 2 billion individuals live in hepatitis E-endemic areas and, therefore, are at risk of infection. According to World Health Organization, HEV causes about 20.1 million infections and 70 000 deaths every year. In developing countries with poor sanitation, this disease is transmitted through contaminated water and is associated with large outbreaks, affecting hundreds or thousands of people. In developed countries, autochthonous cases of HEV have been increasingly recognize

Viral hepatitis contributes to significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. While acute infection may be self-limiting, unrecognised chronic infection and under-utilisation of guideline-based approaches to therapy contribute to increasing rates of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and death. Our aim was to review the current evidence for screening, diagnosis and treatment in hepatitis A to E. Evidence for this review was sourced from international and Australian guidelines and high-quality clinical trials. MEDLINE was searched using structured key word strategy and retrieved articles were
