BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) share transmission routes and often coinfect the liver, leading to accelerated liver disease progression. In the era of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for HCV, the clinical impact of coinfection is further complicated by reports of HBV reactivation following HCV cure. While HCV-induced interferon (IFN) responses are known to suppress HBV, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to investigate how HCV modulates HBV infection in the setting of coinfection and to identify strategies to pre

This investigation was carried out on 233 workers from four wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). in order to detect the prevalence of hepatitis E. C and B viruses among those workers and the relationship of the prevalent viruses with schistosomal infection. The result showed that the highest single infection was with HEV and Schistosoma (50.6% and 50.4%, respectively) in the four (WWTP). For schistosomiasis infected workers, the coinfection with HEV and HCV were the highest single viral infection (63.9% and 40.2%, respectively). The combined infection with HEV+HCV in schistosomiasis workers was

Any virus that can cause an acute hepatitis will, on occasion, give rise to acute liver failure. Such infections can be separated into those due to the primary hepatitis viral infections A to E and those where hepatitis occurs as part of a systemic viral infection, as with infection with, for instance, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, Varicella zoster virus, adenovirus and Herpes simplex virus. In general, the frequency with which the different hepatitis viruses are responsible for acute liver failure is related to their underlying prevalence in particular countries. An apparent exception

Periodontitis is the inflammation of the supporting structures around the dentition. Several microbial agents, mostly bacteria, have been identified as causative factors for periodontal disease. On the other hand, oral cavity is a rich reservoir for viruses since it contains a wide variety of cell types that can be targeted by viruses. Traditionally, the focus of research about the oral flora has been on bacteria because the most widespread oral diseases, like periodontitis and dental caries, are outcomes of bacterial infection. However, recently and especially after the emergence of coronavir

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) causes an acute infection that is frequently asymptomatic, but a spontaneous eradication of HCV infection occurs only in one-third of patients. The remaining two-thirds develop a chronic infection that, in most cases, shows an indolent course and a slow progression to the more advanced stages of the illness. Nearly a quarter of cases with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) develop liver cirrhosis with or without hepatocellular carcinoma. The indolent course of the illness may be troubled by the occurrence of a hepatic flare, i.e., a spontaneous acute exacerbation of CHC due

269 orthotopic liver transplantations (OLT) were performed in 253 patients at our institution from September 1988 to May 1992. 121 patients had end-stage cirrhosis secondary to viral hepatitis type B, delta, or type non-A non-B and C respectively. Reinfection of the graft by persistent viruses is a potential complication in these cases. Passive immunization with anti-HBs hyperimmunoglobulin (HIg) can prevent clinically relevant reinfection of the graft in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and low replication rates. Patients with high replication rates will rarely benefit from OLT

Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) and acute liver failure (ALF) are severe hepatitis that occur in patients with and without chronic liver diseases and/or cirrhosis, respectively, and both often result in death. Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection can cause these severe conditions. We reviewed the role of HAV and HEV, which infect humans through the fecal-oral route, in ALF and ACLF in Asian countries. This narrative review was the derived from a traditional non-systematic review. Hepatitis A should be recognized as one of the sexually transmitted infections, espe

Fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) associated with parvovirus B19 (B19) infection has a favorable prognosis in children. However, there is no data available to predict outcome in cases of FHF associated with hepatotropic virus coinfection. Clinical characteristics of 3 pediatric groups with FHF were compared and it was observed that B19 coinfection with other viruses adds to the severity of the disease and increases the probability of a fatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) show similarity in the transmission, distribution, hepatotropism, and leading to chronic asymptomatic infection. Coinfection of HBV and HCV can lead to more severe liver disease and an increased risk for progression to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Most of the people with chronic infection are unaware of their HBV and HCV infections, hence facilitating these to go undiagnosed until these viruses have caused serious liver damage and they act as a potential source of infection for the community at large. Therefore, the present stu

Infectious agents, especially viruses, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Behçet's disease (BD). The aim of this study was to determine whether BD is associated with hepatitis viruses. In this study, the serological markers of hepatitis (HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc and anti-HCV) and viral nucleic acid (HGV-RNA) were studied in the sera of 35 patients, all of whom fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of the International Study Group for BD, and the results were compared with those of 36 healthy controls. The prevalences of HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc in BD patients were 2.9%, 45.7%, and 31.4%

In 1964, the first human oncovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, was identified in Burkitt lymphoma cells. Since then, 6 other human oncoviruses have been identified: human papillomavirus, Merkel cell polyomavirus, hepatitis B and C viruses, human T-cell lymphotropic virus-1, and human herpesvirus-8. These viruses are causally linked to 12% of all cancers, many of which have mucocutaneous manifestations. In addition, oncoviruses are associated with multiple benign mucocutaneous diseases. Research regarding the pathogenic mechanisms of oncoviruses and virus-specific treatment and prevention is rapidly e

Hepatitis E is considered to be a worldwide public health problem. Although the prevalence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) antibodies in healthy individuals is noted to be 11%, no patients with acute hepatitis E have previously been identified in Mongolia. Three hundred two consecutive patients (183 males and 119 females; median age of 22.0 [Interquartile range: 18.3-25.0] years) who were clinically diagnosed with sporadic acute hepatitis during 2012-2013 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, were studied. By serological and/or molecular approaches, 77 (25.5%), 93 (30.8%), 19 (6.3%), 48 (15.9%), and 12 (4.0%)

Viral hepatitis is a major public health concern globally. World health organization aims at eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. Among the hepatitis causing viruses, hepatitis B and C are primarily transmitted via contaminated blood. Hepatitis A and E, which gets transmitted primarily via the feco-oral route, are the leading cause of acute viral hepatitis. Although vaccines are available against some of these viruses, new cases continue to be reported. There is an urgent need to devise a potent yet economical antiviral strategy against the hepatitis-causing viruses (

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is a common infectious agent that causes acute hepatitis worldwide. Since the incubation period of HAV infection is about one month, it is difficult to identify the source of infection based only on medical interviews. Molecular epidemiological analysis of HAV isolated from patients can help to reveal the infection route and to identify diffuse outbreaks caused by common food vehicles. In the present study, samples were collected from 108 cases notified to the active epidemiological investigation system in Tokyo between 2016 and 2017. Samples found to be HAV-positive by

We studied 48 patients with Behçet disease to determine the clinical spectrum of the disease. We also compared the seropositivity of patients for hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) infection with a healthy control group to determine whether there is an association. The major physical findings were oral aphthosis 93.8%, genital aphthosis 77.1% and ocular manifestations 64.6%. No patients were HCV antibody seropositive, but 3 of the control group (3.1%) tested seropositive. One patient (2.1%) and 2 in the control group (2.1%) tested positive for both HBV surface antigen and HBV core antibody. The dif

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a polyadenylated, positive-stranded RNA virus which is a major cause of enterically transmitted non-A, non-B hepatitis in many developing countries. The viral genome contains three different open reading frames (ORFs): ORF1, which is believed to encode nonstructural proteins, and ORF2 and ORF3, which are believed to encode structural proteins. The full-length putative structural proteins encoded by ORF2 and ORF3 of HEV have been cloned and expressed in recombinant vaccinia virus. Proteins encoded by ORF2 and ORF3 when expressed in vaccinia virus are recognized by poo
