Papaya is a trioecious species, but a unified framework for comparing floral sex differentiation has been lacking. We combined stereomicroscopy, paraffin sectioning, and scanning electron microscopy to establish a continuous 12-stage developmental system from floral primordium initiation to anthesis. Male, female, and hermaphroditic flowers followed a common developmental trajectory during Stages 1-4 and diverged at Stage 5. Male flowers formed fertile stamens and a reduced pistillode, female flowers developed a complete gynoecium without stamens, and hermaphroditic flowers displayed normal, a

Aging leads to age-related pathology that causes death, and genes affect lifespan by determining such pathology. Here we investigate how age-related pathology mediates the effect of genetic and environmental interventions on lifespan in C. elegans by means of a data-driven approach employing machine learning (ML). To this end, extensive data on how diverse determinants of lifespan (sex, nutrition, genotype, mean lifespan range: 7.5 to 40 days) affect patterns of age-related pathology was gathered. This revealed that different life-extending treatments result in distinct patterns of suppression

Reconstructing ancestral reproductive systems is crucial for understanding the evolution of bilaterian body plans. Yet, despite extensive research on some organ systems of the last common bilaterian ancestor, the evolution and development of reproductive systems remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we investigated postembryonic sexual development in the xenacoelomorph Hofstenia atroviridis, a basal acoel species belonging to the infraorder Prosopharyngida. We reared H. atroviridis from eggs to adults and described the ontogeny of its reproductive organs using histology and immunohist

BACKGROUND: Simultaneously hermaphroditic animals allocate resources to both male and female reproductive functions (sex allocation). Although male reproductive success is a key factor in determining sex allocation, it is seldom evaluated in marine hermaphrodites, as it requires the development of suitable DNA markers to trace paternity. The sessile, simultaneously hermaphroditic barnacle Chthamalus challengeri Hoek, 1883 is widely found along rocky intertidal shores in the northwestern Pacific. In this report, we describe microsatellite DNA markers for C. challengeri and multiplex panels of t

Gynodioecy, the coexistence of hermaphrodites with females, often reflects conflicts between cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) genes and nuclear genes restoring male fertility. CMS is frequent in plants and has been recently discovered in one animal: the freshwater snail, Physa acuta. In this system, CMS was linked to a single divergent mitochondrial genome (D), devoid of apparent nuclear restoration. Our study uncovers a second, novel CMS-associated mitogenome (K) in Physa acuta, demonstrating an extraordinary acceleration of molecular evolution throughout the entire K mitochondrial genome, ak

Thyroid hormones (THs) play important roles in growth, development, morphogenesis, reproduction, and so on. They are mainly meditated by binding to thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) in vertebrates. As important members of the nuclear receptor superfamily, TRs and their ligands are involved in many biological processes. To investigate the potential roles of TRs in the gonadal differentiation and sex change, we cloned and characterized the TRs genes in protogynous rice field eel (Monopterus albus). In this study, three types of TRs were obtained, which were TRαA, TRαB and TRβ, encoding preproprote

True hermaphroditism is an usual cause of ambiguous genitalia. In some social areas, the diagnosis is often late and raised as pubertair abnormally. We report a case of a 12 years old Sicilian child, seen in 1975, raised as a boy and whose the main complain was a gynaecomastia. Clinical and paraclinical investigations revealed a small testicle on the one side and on ovary with an uterus and an obturated tube on the opposite side. A small recurvated penis, partially adherent to the scrotum is noticed. A structure embryologycally close to a vagina is also found behind the bladder. Cytogenetic st

Disorders of sexual development are rare in non-human primates. We report a case of true hermaphroditism in a 19-year-old, nulliparous, female baboon (Papio spp.). At necropsy, the animal was obese with adequate muscle mass and hydration. Reproductive organs appeared normal with the exception of 2 firm nodular structures in the myometrium (1-1.5 cm diameter) and a thickened, dark endocervical mucosa. Histologically, both gonads were ovotestes and contained discrete areas of ovarian and testicular tissue. There were follicles in various stages of development surrounded by ovarian stroma. Other

Caenorhabditis nematodes provide 3 natural experiments in which a male/female species evolved to produce 1 with males and self-fertile hermaphrodites. Such changes in mating systems are among the most complex and consequential transformations to occur in evolution and provide excellent models for evolutionary change. Studies of Caenorhabditis elegans and Caenorhabditis briggsae have shown that each species followed a different path to self-fertility, in part by altering 1 of 2 alternate branches of the sex-determination pathway, and in part by recruiting unique modifier genes. Here we examine

Recent acoustic telemetry research has demonstrated that a portion of the common snook Centropomus undecimalis population in Florida skips annual spawning; however, the details of why some individuals skip spawning are unclear. We conducted a comprehensive study of C. undecimalis reproductive biology to determine if a certain population demographic (e.g. size, age, sex, biological condition) skips spawning in a representative estuary in Florida (Tampa Bay). Reproductive parameters, specifically histological examination of ovaries and testes, analysis of reproductive hormone levels and estimate

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mediated activation of the canonical Ras/MAPK signaling cascade is responsible for cell proliferation and cell growth. This signaling pathway is frequently overactivated in epithelial cancers; therefore, studying regulation of this pathway is crucial not only for our fundamental understanding of cell biology but also for our ability to treat EGFR-related disease. Genetic model organisms such as Caenorhabditis elegans, a hermaphroditic nematode, played a vital role in identifying components of the EGFR/Ras/MAPK pathway and delineating their order of funct

BACKGROUND: Cryptic dioecy is a sexual system in which individuals of at least one sex are morphologically hermaphroditic but functionally unisexual. The presence of non-functional reproductive organs may represent an intermediate stage during the evolutionary transition from hermaphroditism to dioecy. The ancestral hypothesis suggests that sterile sex organs may persist as vestiges of an ancestral bisexual state, potentially due to their low resource cost or absence of significant conflict with fertile organs, yet this has rarely been tested. All Actinidia species exhibit cryptic dioecy with

A new species of Dendrodasys (Macrodasyida: Dactylopodolidae) was collected from sublittoral sands on the island of Tobago. The new species of Dendrodasys is the seventh described species in the genus and is easily distinguished by a triangular head that is adorned with a pair of small, dorsal, columnar sensory tubes and a pair dorsal horn-like organs in addition to knob-like pestle organs. The species is likely hermaphroditic and has both frontal and caudal organs, each with ventral pore. Animals were collected from 31 m depth in medium to coarse sand at a dive site located in the northeast c

Species in the genus Hypoplectrus are found primarily in coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, particularly around Florida and the Bahamas. They are a popular choice for hobbyist saltwater aquariums. Members of this genus are simultaneous hermaphrodites, as they have both male and female sexual organs at the same time as an adult. We present the genome sequences of 7 species of Hypoplectrus. Raw read data and assembled genomes are available in Genbank.

Caenorhabditis elegans is an excellent model organism for the study of meiosis, fertilization, and embryonic development. C. elegans exist as self-fertilizing hermaphrodites, which produce large broods of progeny-when males are present, they can produce even larger broods of cross progeny. Errors in meiosis, fertilization, and embryogenesis can be rapidly assessed as phenotypes of sterility, reduced fertility, or embryonic lethality. This article describes a method to determine embryonic viability and brood size in C. elegans. We demonstrate how to set up this assay by picking a worm onto an i

14-year-old Japanese girl with a 46,XX karyotype underwent an exploratory laparotomy for signs of virilization. The left ovary and other pelvic organs were of female type. The right gonad was found to be an ovotestis which was removed. At age of 25, the patient gave birth to a normal male infant by full-term, vaginal delivery. In the literature, this is the third case of normal delivery in 7 true hermaphrodites with pregnancy and childbirth.

The female gonads of moles (genus Talpa) are composed of a cortex, functioning as an ovary, and a medulla, which is structurally similar to that of the testis. In the female reproductive apparatus there are masculine glandular annexes, such as a bilobate prostate, two Cowper glands, and a penis-like clitoris. All these features have recently led to the hypothesis of the presence of hermaphroditism due to sex-reversal in Talpa. The purpose of this study is to understand the functional significance of the structural organization of the female gonads in order to verify this hypothesis. Histologic

In many sexually reproducing animals, females incur higher reproductive costs and therefore tend to be more selective in accepting mates. In Caenorhabditis elegans, self-fertilizing hermaphrodites produce a limited number of self-sperm, and previous studies have suggested that hermaphrodites avoid males. However, the behavioral dynamics of this male-avoidance behavior remain largely unexplored and its underlying mechanisms are not well-understood. Here, I quantitatively analyzed male-avoidance behavior in C. elegans hermaphrodites by measuring locomotor speed in the presence of males. Automate

The transition of the sexual mode occurs widely in animal evolution. In Caenorhabditis nematodes, androdioecy, a sexual polymorphism composed of males and hermaphrodites having the ability to self-fertilize, has evolved independently multiple times. While the modification of noncoding regulatory elements likely contributed to the evolution of hermaphroditism, little is known about these changes. Here, we conducted a genome-wide analysis of conserved noncoding elements (CNEs) focusing on the evolution of hermaphroditism in Caenorhabditis nematodes. We found that, in androdioecious nematodes, mu
