"I Have Always Existed, but Never Been Noticed": A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study of Social Frailty Among Prostate Cancer Survivors.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Survivors may experience social frailty due to physical, psychological, and social challenges after treatment. However, social frailty remains underrecognized in prostate cancer survivorship care. This study aimed to explore survivors' lived experiences of social frailty using a Heideggerian phenomenological approach and provide insights for multidisciplinary survivorship care. METHODS: A qualitative design grounded in Heideggerian interpretive phenomenology was employed. Data were collected between May and July 2025 at the Department of Urology, Shanghai East Hospital. Pa

Beyond Observation: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study of Role Modeling Experiences Among Clinical Residents in an Ethiopian Teaching Hospital: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Role modeling is universally regarded as essential to professional identity formation in medical education, yet its experiential and embodied complexity remains underexamined, particularly outside well-resourced Western settings. This study investigated how clinical residents in an Ethiopian teaching hospital experience role modeling relationships, and how cultural hierarchy, resource scarcity, and postcolonial institutional structures shape that experience. METHODS: We conducted a hermeneutic phenomenological study combining van Manen's life world existential with Interp

Logic modelling as hermeneutic praxis: Bringing knowledge systems into view during comprehensive primary health care planning for homelessness in Australia.

Logic modelling is used widely in health promotion planning for complex health and social problems. It is often undertaken collaboratively with stakeholders across sectors that hold and enact different institutional approaches. We use hermeneutic philosophy to explore how knowledge is 'lived' by - and unfolds differently for - cross-sectoral stakeholders during comprehensive primary healthcare service planning. An Organisational Action Research partnership was established with a non-government organisation designing comprehensive primary health care for individuals experiencing homelessness in

Spirituality and spiritual care in palliative and terminal illness: a systematic review and epistemic meta-analysis from physicians' hermeneutic and bioethical perspective.

BACKGROUND: Spirituality is a fundamental aspect of palliative care; however, it remains insufficiently addressed by physicians, despite patient’s expressed preferences and substantial evidence supporting its benefits. This systematic review explores the reason behind this persistent gap, focusing on the sociological and axiological factors influencing physician engagement with spiritual care. AIM: To develop a spirituality operative definition in the frame of healthcare and simultaneously identify and analyze the (value—based) axiological and sociocultural factors that influence physicians’ e

Participating in the Illness Journey: Meanings of Being a Close Relative to an Older Person Recovering from Hip Fracture-A Phenomenological Hermeneutical Study.

When an older person suffers an acute event, such as a hip fracture, it influences the whole family. Research shows that while close relatives want to be a part of the older person's life during recovery it is associated with a high perceived level of stress and burden. To provide in-depth knowledge of close relatives' experiences in this situation, the aim of this study was to elucidate meanings of being a close relative to an older person recovering from hip fracture surgery. This study has a qualitative descriptive phenomenological hermeneutical design. It is not just a Minor Thing - A Phenomenological-Hermeneutic Study of Patients' Experiences when afflicted by a Minor Heart Attack and Participating in Cardiac Rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: To improve cardiac care, especially cardiac rehabilitation, patients' perspectives should be better addressed. In Denmark, patients afflicted by a minor heart attack in terms of unstable angina pectoris or non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction are treated in fast-track programmes with subacute treatment in hospital, early discharge and follow-up specialised outpatient cardiac rehabilitation. Knowledge of these patients' experiences of their life situation is essential to develop sufficient care protocols. AIM: To gain in-depth understanding of how patients afflicted by a minor he

A Journey in Pursuit of Meaning: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study on Living With Post-Operative Shoulder Pain Following Discharge From Day Case Surgery.

This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the meaning of post-operative pain for patients following day case shoulder surgery. Eighteen adults with a confirmed diagnosis of shoulder injury who were scheduled for day surgery were recruited purposively. Unstructured interviews were conducted by phone or online, audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using Diekelmann's interpretative method. Four constitutive patterns were developed: (1) Suffering perpetually in pain; (2) Overcoming pain; (3) Living in an unfamiliar body; and (4) Communicating and Lacking Essential Information.

Experiences with combined personal-online case management and the self-reliance of older people with multimorbidity living alone in private households: results of an interpretative-hermeneutical analysis.

BACKGROUND: To date in Germany, only few studies have been conducted concerning the efficacy of care and case management (CCM) for older people and about using communication technology during monitoring. AIM: With this study, it is intended to gain a better understanding of how CCM in general is perceived by older people (65+) living alone and in particular what they think about the CCM monitoring process used during video conferences. METHOD: The sampling and work cycle were based on the Grounded Theory. Two different subsamples (each n = 20; total sample: 70% women; age range: 64-92 years)

"I Lost My Image, the Image Others Know Me By": Findings From a Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study of Patients Living With Treatment-Induced Cutaneous Toxicities.

Cancer patients receiving targeted therapies often develop persistent cutaneous adverse effects, such as papulopustular eruption (rash), xerosis cutis (dry skin), pruritus (itch), and hair and nail changes. These can be dose-limiting or a cause for therapy discontinuation but also can be wearing on patients, negatively influencing their self-image and relationships with others. In a Ricoeurian hermeneutic phenomenological study, we aimed to explore the lived experiences of colorectal, pancreatic, and non-small cell lung cancer patients living with cutaneous toxicities following treatment with

Out of the wave: the meaning of suffering and relieved suffering for survivors of the tsunami catastrophe. An hermeneutic-phenomenological study of TV-interviews one year after the tsunami catastrophe, 2004.

The tsunami catastrophe, 26th December 2004, is one of a number of catastrophes that has stricken mankind. Climate reports forecast that natural disasters will increase in number in the future. Research on human suffering after a major catastrophe, using a caring science perspective, is scarce. The aim of the study was to explore the meaning of suffering and relieved suffering of survivors of the tsunami catastrophe, 26th December 2004. An explorative study design, inspired by the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic-phenomenology, was used. Interviews made by the Swedish Television (

Patient involvement in diabetes-related foot ulcers: What do patients need and prefer when undergoing treatment at multidisciplinary outpatient foot centres? A phenomenological hermeneutic study.

We adopted a qualitative descriptive design to gain a broad understanding of the experiences, needs and preferences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 patients with diabetes-related foot ulcers using an interview guide. Patients were recruited from the four multidisciplinary foot centres in the Eastern Danish Region of Zealand. The methodology utilised a phenomenological hermeneutical perspective, allowing participants to share their experiences. The data analysis was inspired by Paul Ricoeur's philosophy of text interpretation. Three themes were identified: (1) Becoming depend

"Suffering as a Lifelong Companion: A Phenomenological-Hermeneutic Study of Men Living With Severe Psychiatric Illness"Lidelse som livslang følgesvenn: En fenomenologisk-hermeneutisk studie av menn som lever med alvorlig psykiatrisk sykdom.

Accumulation of suffering in later life due to severe psychiatric illness has received surprisingly little interest in nursing research. Suffering in daily living seems to be more demanding for men, a phenomenon still debated in the literature. This phenomenological-hermeneutic study aims at describing and interpreting the perspectives of adult men and their experiences of suffering in daily living with severe psychiatric illness, diagnosed as schizophrenia. Data were collected in dialogical conversations with four men aged between 20 and 40 years, living alone in northern Norway. The themes c

Epistemic injustice in healthcare: How doctor gender and speciality shape patient voice in women's thyroid care.

Women's health concerns are frequently dismissed in clinical settings, a pattern described as medical gaslighting. Drawing on Fricker's (2007) framework of epistemic injustice and Carel and Kidd's (2014) extension to healthcare, this study conceptualises patient voice, encompassing feelings of involvement, empowerment, and being heard, as a measurable correlate of epistemic injustice in the clinical encounter. We distinguish two forms: testimonial injustice, where a patient's symptom account is assigned insufficient credibility, and hermeneutical injustice, where gaps in interpretive framework

Poststructuralist historicism and the psychological construction of anxiety disorders.

When applied to the construction of anxiety disorders, theories of poststructuralist historicism emphasize acts of interpretation that constitute and construct the disorders and problematize the processes by which meaning is constructed. An examination of the historical formulations of anxiety disorders, and in particular, agoraphobia, provides the opportunity for reanalyzing traditional approaches to the classifications of disorders. Psychological issues of paradox, attachment, and personal identity, which are crucial to current conceptualizations of agoraphobia, are acutely problematized wit
