Hexachlorobenzene and chlorpyrifos, environmental pollutants that disrupt the endocrine system, promote angiogenesis associated with endometriosis.

Endometriosis defined by the growth of endometrial tissues outside the uterus, affects women of reproductive age. A critical process in endometriosis progression, angiogenesis involves endothelial cell migration, proliferation and tube formation, with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) playing a powerful role. Exposure to endocrine-disrupting pollutants, like Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) andChlorpyrifos (CPF), is linked to a higher risk of reproductive diseases including endometriosis. Both HCB and CPF are weak aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) ligands. These study examined HCB and CPF mechani

Aerobic degradation of hexachlorobenzene and pentachloronitrobenzene by Cupriavidus nantongensis HB4B5: Dechlorination mechanisms and bioremediation potential.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), including hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB), are highly toxic and persistent pollutants that pose significant ecological and human health risks. Their chemical stability makes them particularly resistant to biodegradation. In this study, we isolated and characterized Cupriavidus nantongensis HB4B5, a novel aerobic bacterium capable of efficiently degrading HCB and PCNB, without the accumulation of toxic intermediates. The strain demonstrated high tolerance to multiple OCPs (HCB, PCNB, hexachlorocyclohexane, and chlordane), utilizing th

Impact of endocrine disruptor hexachlorobenzene on the mammary gland and breast cancer: The story thus far.

Breast cancer incidence is increasing globally and exposure to endocrine disruptors has gained importance as a potential risk factor. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) was once used as a fungicide and, despite being banned, considerable amounts are still released into the environment. HCB acts as an endocrine disruptor in thyroid, uterus and mammary gland and was classified as possibly carcinogenic to human. This review provides a thorough analysis of results obtained in the last 15 years of research and evaluates data from assays in mammary gland and breast cancer in diverse animal models. We discuss t

Hexachlorobenzene induces TGF-β1 expression, which is a regulator of p27 and cyclin D1 modifications.

Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) is an organochlorine pesticide widely distributed in the environment. In this study we have demonstrated that HCB induced loss of cell viability and alterations in cell cycle regulation in FRTL-5 rat thyroid cells. Analysis of cell cycle distribution by flow cytometric analysis demonstrated that HCB induced cell cycle arrest at G2/M and at G0/G1 phase, inhibiting cell cycle progression at the G1/S phase, after 24 h and 72 h of treatment. HCB-treatment resulted in an increase in transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β1) mRNA levels, a negative regulator of cell growth in

Effect of the environmental pollutant hexachlorobenzene (HCB) on the neuronal differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells.

Exposure to persistent environmental pollutants may constitute an important factor on the onset of a number of neurological disorders such as autism, Parkinson's disease, and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), which have also been linked to reduced GABAergic neuronal function. GABAergic neurons produce γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. However, the lack of appropriate models has hindered the study of suspected environmental pollutants on GABAergic function. In this work, we have examined the effect of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a persistent an

Association of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) with in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) are persistent chlorinated pesticides with endocrine activity that may adversely affect the early stages of human reproduction. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to determine the association of serum levels of HCB, DDT, and DDE with implantation failure, chemical pregnancy, and spontaneous abortion in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) from 1994 to 2003. METHODS: Levels of HCB and congeners of DDT and DDE were measured in serum collected during the follicular phase. Multiva

Effects of hexachlorobenzene and its metabolites pentachlorophenol and tetrachlorohydroquinone on serum thyroid hormone levels in rats.

Effects of administration of equimolar doses of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and its metabolites pentachlorophenol (PCP) and tetrachlorohydroquinone (TCHQ) on serum thyroxine (TT4) and triiodothyronine (TT3) levels in rats were studied. Furthermore, it was investigated whether the observed effects were related to the serum levels of HCB or PCP. Rats received either corn oil (controls) or HCB, PCP or TCHQ in a single equimolar intraperitoneal dose of 0.056 mmol/kg. Results indicated that HCB did not alter serum TT4 and TT3 levels for a period up to 96 h after dosing. In contrast, PCP and TCHQ were b

Ability of several hexachlorobenzene metabolites to induce porphyrin accumulation in chick embryo liver "in ovo".

The present study investigates the ability of several hexachlorobenzene (HCB) metabolites to induce porphyrin accumulation in chick embryo liver cells in ovo, in order to further clarify the role of metabolites in the mechanism of HCB-induced porphyria. HCB per se had no effect on liver porphyrin content, but pretreatment assays with phenobarbital suggested that its metabolic products did. When the direct effect of phenolic, sulfur-containing, and benzenic metabolites of HCB were tested, the following results were obtained. Less chlorinated benzenes (pentachlorobenzene and 1,2,3,4- 1,2,3,5- 1,

[Influence of p-amino-benzoic acid on the hexachlorobenzene induced porphyria in the rat (author's transl)].

The effect of p-amino-benzoic (PAB) acid on the experimental hexachlorobenzene (HCB) induced hepatic porphyria of female Wistar rats was determined under different conditions: Neither a simultaneous HCB-PAB application (prophylactic administration) nor the PAB application after manifestation of the HCB-porphyria (therapeutic administration) influenced significantly the excretin of urinary porphyrins or precursors (porphobilinogen or 5-amino-levulinic acid). PAB application decreased the cytochrome P-450 content in the liver of the rats whereas HCB incuded enzymatic activity of this monooxygena

Pentachlorobenzene, hexachlorobenzene, and pentachlorophenol in children's serum from industrial and rural populations after restricted use.

The study of a population of 4-year-old children born between 1997 and 1999 in an urban area under strong inputs of pentachlorobenzene (PeCB) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) suggested that the measured concentrations of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in serum may essentially result from metabolism of these chlorinated hydrocarbons. In contrast, examination of a rural population of children where the same compounds were present at relatively low levels points to other inputs besides transformation of PeCB and HCB being responsible for the measured PCP concentrations. In both populations, the results showe

Maternal pregnancy serum level of heptachlor epoxide, hexachlorobenzene, and beta-hexachlorocyclohexane and risk of cryptorchidism in offspring.

Prenatal exposure to environmental endocrine disrupters has been postulated to cause adverse effects on male reproductive health. Exposure to organochlorine pesticides with anti-androgenic and estrogenic potency has been shown to interfere with the sex-hormone-dependent process of testicular descent in animal models. We examined the relation between serum levels of the pesticides heptachlor epoxide (HCE), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (beta-HCCH) in pregnant women, and the occurrence of cryptorchidism in their sons. These three pesticides were previously suggested as

Porphyria turcica due to hexachlorobenzene: a 20 to 30 year follow-up study on 204 patients.

During 1955-1961 in south-east Turkey, over 3000 patients developed porphyria due to ingestion of hexachlorobenzene, a fungicide added to wheat seedlings. Subsequently they developed pigmentation, hirsutism, weakness, porphyrinuria and bullae. The condition was called kara yara or 'black sore'. Many of the breast-fed children under the age of 1 year died from a disease known as pembe yara or 'pink sore'. In this follow-up study of 204 patients, 20-30 years later, there were 132 males and 72 females, average age 32.1 years (at time of examination), with an average age of onset of 10.2 years, an

Biochar-Polylactic Acid Composite Accelerated Reductive Dechlorination of Hexachlorobenzene in Paddy Soils under Neutral pH Condition.

In order to clarify the effect of biochar-polylactic acid (PLA) composite on reductive dechlorination of HCB in paddy soils, an anaerobic incubation experiment was conducted with four treatments of Sterile control, Control, Biochar, and Biochar-PLA in Hydragric Acrisols (Ac) and Gleyi-Stagnic Anthrosols (An). The results showed that in Ac, biochar addition significantly promoted HCB degradation during the whole incubation period, but biochar-PLA composite inhibited HCB dechlorination due to the low soil pH in the early period and then accelerated HCB degradation while soil pH climbed to nearly

Combatting pesticide pollution: using liquid scintillation spectrometry to assess 14C-labeled hexachlorobenzene removal by mangrove Bacillus spp.

This study explored the ability of two Bacillus species isolated from mangrove sediments to degrade hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a persistent organic pollutant that affects the quality of surface water, groundwater, and soil. Hence, we analyzed bacterial growth in a medium with hexachlorobenzene as the sole carbon source. Moreover, chemical oxygen demand removal, ecotoxicity, and measured radiolabeled HCB degradation were assessed. Our results revealed that both Bacillus strains (I3 and I6) demonstrated hexachlorobenzene-degrading potential and achieved degradation rates of 11.5 ± 1.47% and 21.1 ±

Angiotensin II type 1 receptor is involved in hypertension and vascular alterations caused by environmental toxicant hexachlorobenzene.

Environmental hexachlorobenzene (HCB) increases blood pressure (BP) in female rats, causing alterations in arterial structure and function. Here we study the role of Angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1) in HCB-induced hypertension through the use of AT1 antagonist losartan. HCB-treated male rats showed a 22.7% increase in BP which was prevented by losartan. Losartan blocked HCB-induced changes in arterial morphology (decreased aorta cell number and increased wall thickness). Losartan also prevented HCB-induced alterations in artery relaxation by acetylcholine and nitroprusside but not the redu

Dithionite promoted microbial dechlorination of hexachlorobenzene while goethite further accelerated abiotic degradation by sulfidation in paddy soil.

It is of great scientific and practical importance to explore the mechanisms of accelerated degradation of Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in soil. Both iron oxide and dithionite may promote the reductive dechlorination of HCB, but their effects on the microbial community and the biotic and abiotic mechanisms behind it remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of goethite, dithionite, and their interaction on microbial community composition and structure, and their potential contribution to HCB dechlorination in a paddy soil to reveal the underlying mechanism. The results showed that goethit
