A New Method for Obtaining Monospecies and Binary Cultures of Staphylococcus spp. in Alginate Gel and the Study of the Action of Active Compounds on These Cultures on the Example of Catecholamines.

A simple and efficient method for obtaining monospecies and binary Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis cultures in sodium alginate gel matrix mimicking the natural microenvironment of the nasal cavity was proposed. The cultures were used for studying the effect of norepinephrine on monospecies and binary communities of two types of bacteria, S. aureus (invasive strain) and S. epidermis (commensal strain). After 24-h incubation, S. aureus predominated in the binary community, but later it was replaced by S. epidermis. Norepinephrine at higher concentrations accelerated this pro

Controlled Release of Spirotetramat Using Starch-Chitosan-Alginate-Encapsulation.

This study was intended to develop an environment-friendly controlled release system for spirotetramat in an alginate matrix. Four formulations, starch-chitosan-calcium alginate (SCCA), starch-calcium alginate (SCA), chitosan-calcium alginate (CCA), and calcium alginate (CA) complex gel beads, were prepared by the extrusion-exogenous gelation method. The properties of the formulations were studied. The results showed that the release behaviors of the formulations in water could be well described by the logistic model, and the release occurred through Fickian diffusion. Among the four formulati

Effect of irradiated sodium alginate and phosphorus on biomass and artemisinin production in Artemisia annua.

It is now being realized that irradiation products of natural bioactive agents can also be beneficially utilized to impart value addition in agriculture by converting these bioactive agents into more useful form. Polysaccharides, such as sodium alginate, have proven to be wonderful growth promoting substances in their depolymerized form for various plants. Artemisinin has been increasingly popular as an effective and safe alternative therapy against malaria; also proved effective against the highly adaptable malaria parasite, which has already become resistant to many other drugs. The drug art

Facile synthesis of a new fluorogenic metal scavenging interpolymeric diamide based on cellulose and alginic acids.

A microwave assisted synthesis of a water soluble fluorogenic interpolymeric diamide has been described involving alginic acid and polyglucuronic acid (PGA) amide of ethylenediamine (EDA), through a monoamide of PGA and EDA, in good yields (>80wt% in each step). PGA was prepared by TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl piperidine-1-oxyl radical) mediated oxidation of cellulose of the halophytic plant Salicornia brachiata. The amides were characterized by spectral analyses. The fluorescence emission of the PGA amide was 7-fold greater than that of the interpolymeric diamide. PGA monoamide exhibited superi

Thiacloprid-Zn-sodium alginate-chitosan microcapsules for sustained Aphis gossypii control, alleviated plant chemical stress, and reduced non-target toxicity.

Neonicotinoid insecticides have been widely used in agriculture due to their broad insecticidal spectrum and high biological activity. However, the inefficiency of traditional pesticide formulations causes significant potential environmental risks. Microencapsulation technology is crucial in sustainable agriculture by enhancing bioactivity, extending duration, and reducing the impact on non-target organisms. In this study, Zn-sodium alginate-chitosan microcapsules loaded with thiacloprid (Thi@Zn-SA-CS) were prepared by emulsification-cross-linking method, using sodium alginate and chitosan as

Robust detection and high-resolution mapping of implanted alginate hydrogels in tissue with Raman spectroscopy.

Alginate hydrogels are highly valuable for a variety of biomedical applications, such as scaffolds for tissue engineering and carriers for cell therapy. Alginate, a natural polysaccharide derived from brown algae, is unique for its ability to form a hydrogel in the presence of Ca2+ and is biocompatible and biodegradable. There is an unmet need for robust detection of hydrogels after implantation in cell-based therapies. In this study, we tested the feasibility of using Raman spectroscopy to detect alginate signatures and spatially mapping alginate in cryosectioned tissue samples following impl

Fabrication of sodium alginate-biochar-graphene oxide composite for sulfadiazine adsorption from aquatic environment: Performance and mechanisms.

The effective removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ), an emerging and persistent aquatic contaminant, remains a significant environmental challenge. In this study, a novel sodium alginate-biochar-graphene oxide composite (SA-BC-GO) was synthesized via crosslinking for efficient SDZ adsorption removal in aqueous environments. Characterization revealed a hierarchically porous architecture with a 2.6-fold increase in specific surface area compared to pristine SA, along with reinforced pore walls and enhanced mechanical stability. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated a Langmuir maximum capacity of 51.

pH-dependent release property of alginate beads containing calcium carbonate particles.

Alginate bead containing calcium carbonate particle were prepared by dropping the suspension of alginate/calcium carbonate (4/1, w/w) into aqueous solution of CaCl(2) (0.1 M). The pH-dependent release property of the bead was observed for 12 h using blue dextran as a model drug. The release increased up to 4 h in a saturation manner. When no calcium carbonate was contained, the release exhibited no marked variation with pH and the values were 27-39%. On the other hand, in case calcium carbonate was included in the matrix of alginate beads, intensive release(40-50%) was achieved in acidic and n

The glycosaminoglycans of human plasma.

A method is proposed for the measurement of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) on 5-10 ml of plasma. It is based on the adsorption of GAG on small ECTEOLA columns followed by measurement of the hexuronic acid in the NaCl eluates. Routine use of the method has indicated the presence of a GAG fraction that adsorbs readily on ECTEOLA ("free" GAG) and of another that adsorbs on it only after treatment with papain ("bound" GAG). "Free" and "bound" GAG have been measured in normal adults, normal children, and children affected by mucopolysaccharidosis type I; the results obtained are in good agreement with th

Isolation and characterization of Novosphingobium oxfordense sp. nov. and Novosphingobium mississippiense sp. nov. from soil, with LC-MS/MS and genome-based investigation of their glycosphingolipid production.

Members of the genus Novosphingobium are well known for the biosynthesis of glycosphingolipids. Here, we are reporting two recently discovered species belonging to this genus, which were isolated from a potted tomato plant in Oxford, Mississippi, USA. The cells of both strains grew aerobically, were rod-shaped, and formed yellow colonies. According to the 16S rRNA gene and whole genome-based phylogeny, both strains have the highest similarity to N. clariflavum 164 T . Genomes of both strains had a G + C content of 64 mol %, and assemblies with four circular contigs: two plasmids and two larger

Development of Eudragit L100/sodium alginate-carrageenan core/shell nanofiber patches for dermal delivery of omega-3 acid ethyl ester.

Oxidation-prone omega-3 acid ethyl esters offer biologically attractive lipid cues for skin repair and dermocosmetic applications; however, their topical translation is constrained by poor aqueous compatibility, chemical lability, and limited residence at the skin interface. Herein, a coaxially electrospun core-shell nanofiber patch was developed to compartmentalize docosahexaenoic/eicosapentaenoic acid (DHA/EPA)-containing omega-3 ethyl esters within an Eudragit L100 (EL100) core while presenting a sodium alginate-κ-carrageenan (SA-CRG) polysaccharide shell. Favourable modulation of the inflammatory changes in hypercholesterolemic atherogenesis by a low-molecular-weight heparin derivative.

BACKGROUND: In the hypercholesterolemic state, the net result of combined oxidative and nitrosative stress is a pro-inflammatory phenotype that is manifested as increased adhesion molecule expression, enhanced leucocyte trafficking, and increased vascular permeability. The present work explores the inflammatory aspects of hypercholesterolemic atherogenesis, and also evaluates the role of a low-molecular-weight heparin derivative (LMWH), Certoparin, on a biochemical basis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two groups of male Wistar rats were fed an atherogenic diet (normal rat chow plus 4% cholesterol, 1%

Mild-temperature conjugation of pea protein isolate with oxidized sodium alginate: structural, interfacial, and emulsion properties.

Pea protein isolate (PPI) has limited food applications because of poor aqueous solubility and emulsifying performance. Here, sodium alginate (SA) was oxidized to generate reactive aldehyde groups, enabling Schiff-base-mediated conjugation with PPI under mild conditions (40 °C, 90 min). By varying reaction parameters, conjugates with grafting degrees (GD) of 10.67-22.87% were obtained. Increasing GD was accompanied by increased β-sheet content (32.81-41.52%), tertiary structural reorganization, enhanced surface charge, a water contact angle of up to 79.35°, and a > 50% reduction in oil-water i

Conserved Mechanism of 2'-Phosphorylation-Aided Amide Ligation in Peptidyl Nucleoside Biosynthesis.

Peptidyl nucleoside antifungals, represented by nikkomycins and polyoxins, consist of an unusual six-carbon nucleoside [aminohexuronic acid (AHA)] ligated to a nonproteinogenic amino acid via an amide bond. A recent study suggested that AHA is biosynthesized through cryptic phosphorylation, where a 2'-phosphate is introduced early in the pathway and required to form AHA. However, whether 2'-phosphorylation is necessary for the last step of biosynthesis, the formation of the amide bond between AHA and nonproteinogenic amino acids, remains ambiguous. Here, we address this question with comprehen

Granulated Ammonium Alginate as a Functional Sodium-Sequestration Agent: Formulation Optimization Using Box-Behnken Design.

Excessive salt intake is a major risk factor for cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and renal diseases, highlighting the need for strategies to reduce intestinal sodium absorption. Ammonium alginate (AAL) suppresses the postprandial increase in blood sodium levels and promotes fecal sodium excretion via ion-exchange and gel-mediated sodium entrapment in the gastrointestinal tract. However, its unpleasant odor and taste, along with its high viscosity upon contact with saliva, cause oral discomfort and limit its practical use in food and clinical settings. In this study, AAL granules were develope

Micellar Nanogels from Alginate-Based Diblock Copolysaccharides.

Alginates are marine polysaccharides known for their ability to selectively bind calcium ions and form hydrogels. They are widely used in biomedical applications but are challenging to produce as nanogels. Here we introduce a self-assembly route to create stable alginate-based nanogels under near-equilibrium conditions. Guluronate (G) blocks, which interact with divalent cations such as Ca2+, Ba2+, and Sr2+, were extracted from alginates and covalently linked through their reducing end to the reducing end of dextran (Dex) chains, forming linear block copolymers that self-assemble into micellar

The biochemical response of rabbit articular cartilage matrix to an induced talcum synovitis.

Transient synovitis is a commonly occurring affliction in the hips of young children. The results of an experimental model of this condition produced in the immature rabbit's hip showed that there is a significant response in the articular cartilage. Thus, the cartilage rapidly thickens, becomes more hydrated and reveals an initial decrease in glycosaminoglycan concentration. Three weeks following the induction of synovitis, the concentrations of water, glycosaminoglycan and collagen are similar to the control side. The increase of articular cartilage mass is due, not only to an increased hydr
