A contingent view of reactions to objective pay conditions: interdependence among pay structure characteristics and pay relative to internal and external referents.

The authors studied the general proposition that because social comparisons are so central to how people react to pay, the effect of an important pay condition likely depends on a social pay comparison that is relevant to that condition. To investigate this, the authors used actual pay data on more than 2,000 public school teachers across more than 400 school districts and tested whether pay equity perceptions resulted from interactions among objective measures of structural (pay dispersion, entry-level pay, pay range maximum, external competitiveness) and individual (pay relative to internal

Critically engaging: integrating the social and the biomedical in international microbicides research.

Randomized controlled trials and critical social theory are known not to be happy bedfellows. Such trials are embedded in a positivist view of the world, seeking definitive answers to testable questions; critical social theory questions the methods by which we deem the world knowable and may consider experiments in the biomedical sciences as social artifacts. Yet both of these epistemologically and methodologically divergent fields offer potentially important advances in HIV research. In this paper, we describe collaboration between social and biomedical researchers on a large, publicly funded

Integrating behaviour, physiology, and immune response to social stress in fish.

Dominance hierarchies in fish are established through conflicts and lead to significant differences in stress physiology, behaviour, and immune function between dominant and subordinate individuals. This review explores the relationship between social stress within these hierarchies, individual variations in stress responses and cognitive bias towards stressful situations, and the impact of conflicts on future performance and interactions between stress and the immune system. Fish express divergent stress coping styles (proactive and reactive) that differ in the reactivity of the stress axes e

Eating disorders: when social rank perceptions are shaped by early shame experiences.

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has shown that early adverse experiences can be an important risk factor for eating disorders. However, the role of early shame memories and how they are structured as traumatic and central memories to self-identity in eating disorders has never been investigated. This study explores the phenomenology of shame memories involving attachment figures and other agents from the wider social domain in patients with eating disorders, and examines the relationship between their traumatic and centrality features, social comparison based on physical appearance, and the severi

Socioeconomic status is associated with striatal dopamine D2/D3 receptors in healthy volunteers but not in cocaine abusers.

Positron emission tomography (PET) studies in animals and humans have shown that social status is associated with striatal dopamine D2/D3 receptor (D2/D3R) availability. That is, higher social hierarchy and higher scores on questionnaires assessing social status correlated positively with striatal D2/D3R availability in animals and humans respectively. Furthermore, subordinate monkeys were vulnerable to cocaine self-administration, suggesting that alternations in social hierarchy can change D2/D3R availability and vulnerability to cocaine use. Here, we investigated whether socioeconomic status

LIMPRINT: A Sociological Perspective on "Chronic Edema".

Background: Chronic edema is a condition that is biologically complex, distressing for patients and sociopolitically weak. Like many other complex and chronic conditions, it has a low status within health care. The result is that it has a low priority in health policy and consequently is undervalued and undertreated. While evidence-based practice promotes a hierarchy of evidence, it is also the case that clinical practice is influenced by a hierarchy of social status. These are as much political as they are scientific. Methods and Results: This article will provide an explanation for why chron

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with Behçet's syndrome within the framework of Maslow's hierarchy of needs: implications for patient empowerment in national or global emergencies.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this online survey was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with Behçet's syndrome (BS) using Maslow's hierarchy of needs. METHODS: Sixty-eight BS patients from the UK completed an online questionnaire that covered three components of Maslow's hierarchy of needs regarding Physiological needs (sleep, food, mobility), Safety needs (employment, health), Social needs (relationships), personal precautions and main concerns regarding COVID-19. RESULTS: The patients received a letter from the NHS (66.2%) advising shielding. Health concerns were addressed

Scale-Dependent Habitat Selection and Size-Based Dominance in Adult Male American Alligators.

Habitat selection is an active behavioral process that may vary across spatial and temporal scales. Animals choose an area of primary utilization (i.e., home range) then make decisions focused on resource needs within patches. Dominance may affect the spatial distribution of conspecifics and concomitant habitat selection. Size-dependent social dominance hierarchies have been documented in captive alligators, but evidence is lacking from wild populations. We studied habitat selection for adult male American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis; n = 17) on the Pearl River in central Mississipp

From social status to emotions: Asymmetric contests predict emotional responses to victory and defeat.

Social status plays a key role in expressing different emotions. However, little is known about which mechanisms underlie the variability of emotional responses that are linked to social hierarchy. Status instability-a natural characteristic of hierarchies-can help to untangle the status-emotion relationship. Therefore, we verified whether the emotional expressions of fighters could be predicted by the degree of asymmetry in their fighting abilities during a contest. Emotional expressions upon the announcement of victory or defeat were evaluated using three different methods: nonverbal behavio

Perceived language legitimacy as a psychological judgment: a conceptual analysis of recognition, belonging, and self-worth.

This article develops perceived language legitimacy (PLL) as a theoretically refined framework for examining how languages and varieties come to be regarded as authoritative, valuable, or marginal within particular social contexts. Existing accounts of language attitudes, symbolic power, and language ideology have provided important explanations of linguistic evaluation and inequality. Less attention, however, has been given to the psychological appraisal through which speakers anticipate whether a language or variety will be accepted as a credible resource for knowledge, identity, authority,

Workplace mobbing and effects on workers' health.

In this work, we analyze various consequences of the phenomenon of mobbing on the health of a work sector with special characteristics: the agro fruit sector. For this purpose, we collected data from a sample of 396 workers (61 men and 331 women) belonging to this sector in the Region of Murcia (Spain). A questionnaire with the following measurement instruments was administered: a Spanish adaptation of the revised Negative Acts Questionnaire (Sáez, García, & Llor, 2003), the Psychosomatic Problems Questionnaire (Hock, 1988), and a measure of absenteeism. The results revealed a significant and

Eating disorders and schizophrenia in male patients: a review.

Studies have previously demonstrated a relationship between social status and anxiety disorders such as panic disorder. Repeated episodes of panic attacks do not occur in combination with an actual fear stimulus or stressor. However, social ranking modulates the perception of the social signals of a threat or stressor. The hypothalamic nuclei are well‑known for their role in the elaboration of fear‑induced reactions. The dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) and the ventromedial hypothalamic (VMH) nuclei are hypothalamic subnuclei involved in the processing of threatening stimuli‑evoked aversive resp

[A role of long-term social interactions in the control of spermatogenesis in male mice of inbred strains PT and CBA/Lac].

Social hierarchy in the animal community is a structure of behavior relations when members of a social group vary in their ability to acquire resources in the presence of others. The aim of our study was to investigate social dominance effects on development of the reproduction function in male mice. Sperm quality, relative testis and epididymis weights were evaluated in male mice of PT and CBA/Lac inbred strains at 70 day of age after pairing throughout the 32 day period. The effect of social dominance on sperm quality was observed only in males of the CBA/Lac strain. The dominant males had h

Children's explanations for success shape implicit bias.

Children's social preferences often mirror societal hierarchies, favoring higher-status and more successful groups. How children explain why some groups succeed while others do not may contribute to the development of these preferences. Attributing disparities to internal factors, such as effort or ability, risks instilling bias, whereas recognizing structural differences in access to opportunity may mitigate it. Across two studies, we examined children's reasoning about internal and structural explanations for a novel group disparity and whether these explanations impacted their social evalua

Assessing human vulnerability in industrial chemical accidents: a qualitative and quantitative methodological approach.

Iran as a developing country is experiencing the industrialization process quickly and is thus exposed to different industrial hazards mostly derived from chemicals. In the light of this problem, this study estimated the human vulnerability in chemical accidents using the software simulation of accidental chlorine gas releases. A mixed method (qualitative and quantitative) study carried out in 4 phases during 2015-2017 in Ray County, Tehran Province. It included a systematic literature review, software simulation, Fuzzy Delphi Analytical Hierarchy Process (FDAHP) hierarchy process study, and c

[The reactivity of laboratory mice in pharmacological tests as dependent on their zoosocial status].

The study was conducted on dominant and inferior albino laboratory mice united in small groups according to linear hierarchy. Naloxone, amphetamine, and 5-hydroxytryptophan were used in the pharmacological tests, estimating, respectively, the pain response in the hot plate test, motor activity in the actometer, and the appearance of the specific stereotyped "head-twitching" response. The dominant subjects were less sensitive to amphetamine and 5-hydroxytryptophan than the inferior of animals, whereas the effect of naloxone depended on the level of the zoosocial stress. Therefore, the rank of t

"We decide, you carry it out": a social network analysis of multidisciplinary long-term care teams.

The purpose of this study was to describe the structure of multidisciplinary long-term care teams by identifying the pattern of relationships that develop amongst staff as they go about their work. Using a social network analysis approach, team members were classified as occupying the same structural position based on their patterns of relationships with other team members. The analysis was based on the results of a self-administered survey of 93 health care workers on three teams in the same multilevel geriatric care facility in Metropolitan Toronto. A common structure of the teams was identi

Agonism and dominance in female blue monkeys.

Agonistic behavior features prominently in hypotheses that explain how social variation relates to ecological factors and phylogenetic constraints. Dominance systems vary along axes of despotism, tolerance, and nepotism, and comparative studies examine cross-species patterns in these classifications. To contribute to such studies, we present a comprehensive picture of agonistic behavior and dominance relationships in wild female blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis), an arboreal guenon, with data from 9 groups spanning 18 years. We assessed where blue monkeys fall along despotic, tolerant, and ne

Atypical social behaviors in mouse models for Rett syndrome.

Social behavior depends on neural circuits that encode social identity, memory, and motivational value. These processes engage coordinated activity across hippocampal subregions, medial prefrontal cortex, thalamic and hypothalamic nuclei, as well as the mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic systems that regulate internal state, hierarchy, and social reward. In Rett syndrome and MeCP2-deficient rodent models, basic sociability is often preserved, alongside impairments in social memory, dominance behavior, aggression control, and flexible social responding, frequently accompanied by anxiety-like and se
