Historical characterization of trigeminal neuralgia.

TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA IS a well known clinical entity characterized by agonizing, paroxysmal, and lancinating facial pain, often triggered by movements of the mouth or eating. Historical reviews of facial pain have attempted to describe this severe pain over the past 2.5 millennia. The ancient Greek physicians Hippocrates, Aretaeus, and Galen, described kephalalgias, but their accounts were vague and did not clearly correspond with what we now term trigeminal neuralgia. The first adequate description of trigeminal neuralgia was given in 1671, followed by a fuller description by physician John L

Nothing new under the sun: the management of epistaxis.

The management of epistaxis is reviewed from ancient times onwards. Many curious methods have been employed and indeed epistaxis has been encouraged at times. Although current management is based on sound principles folklore remedies still predominate amongst some of our patients. The basis of contemporary treatments was known and practised by our ancient forbears.

From Psychologia Anthropologica to Psychotherapeutics: A Reconstruction of the Development of the Idea of Medical Psychology From the 16th to the 19th Century.

The article undertakes a historical analysis of the concepts of psychology, psychiatry and psychotherapy, assuming that, despite current institutional differences, they share a common interest in the soul or mind. The aim of this paper is to present an alternative path for the development of psychotherapy as a practical continuation of the concept of psychologia anthropologica introduced by Otto Casmann in the late 16th century. The text traces the conceptual evolution from the first appearances of the term Psychologia, Otto Casmann's two-volume treatise (Psychologia anthropologica, 1594, 1596

Treatment of Tuberculosis. A Historical Perspective.

Of all achievements in medicine, the successful treatment of tuberculosis has had one of the greatest impacts on society. Tuberculosis was a leading cause of disease and a mortal enemy of humanity for millennia. The first step in finding a cure was the discovery of the cause of tuberculosis by Robert Koch in 1882. The sanatorium movement that began shortly afterward in Europe, and soon spread to the United States, brought attention to the plight of afflicted persons, and catalyzed public health action. The antituberculosis benefit of streptomycin was announced in 1945, although application was

Scurrilous jests and retaliatory abuse in Shakespeare's "Troilus and Cressida".

With its unexpected and relentless staging of verbal rather than physical violence, Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida reveals a deep engagement with late-Tudor conflicts over the appropriate uses of satiric discourse in the public field. In particular, the play reimagines the aggressive response of magistrates who seek to control and recast various species of abusive language, thereby politicizing the “sportive malice” enacted in the subplots of Shakespeare's late comedies. No—where is this official manipulation of satirical voices more insistent—and ultimately destabilizing—than in the libel

The history of the surgical repair of spina bifida.

INTRODUCTION: The history of surgical spina bifida repair has seen many successes and failures. Many early surgeons attempted treatment of open spina bifida defects before a clear understanding of the disease process or pathology had been discovered. CONCLUSIONS: The attempts, while often fruitless, served to better our understanding of the disease and represent stepping-stones to the treatment we successfully use today. The present paper reviews the history of the surgical treatment of myelomeningoceles.

[History of surgery for cholelithiasis: from the era of cholecystostomy to laparoscopic surgery].

Since Stalpert von der Wiel first incised the abdominal wall for bile drainage in a patient with an intraabdominal abscess due to gangrenous cholecystitis with calculi in 1684, the problems inherent in the treatment of cholelithisiasis have received attention from surgeons working in this field. However, the major event was the development of the technique of cholecystectomy by Langenbuch in 1882 opening a new era in surgery for cholelithiasis. Subsequently numerous advances were made in cholecystectomy, choledochotomy, choledochoenterostomy, and sphincteroplasty associated with progress in th

Parasitology in East Germany--roots, period of the G.D.R., future.

The paper starts with a historical reflection on the region and on famous scientific personalities which worked up parasitological problems on the territory of East Germany. Native scientists like J. L. Frisch, C. A. Rudolphi, R. Leuckart, A. C. Gerlach, R. Virchow, R. Koch, R. von Ostertag, W. Nöller, R. Wetzel made in fundamental contributions to the growth of knowledge in General and Special Parasitology. The parasitological institutions existing in East Germany are represented briefly. The parasitologists of East Germany, nearly 160,--biologists, physicians and veterinarians--among them mo

Reconsidering Hypnosis and Psychoanalysis: Toward Creating a Context for Understanding.

Sigmund Freud developed what became psychoanalysis in the context of his experiences with hypnosis and the treatment of the grand hysterics of his era, conditions largely classified among the dissociative disorders in contemporary systems of diagnosis. He rapidly constructed understandings of the human mind and human distress that replaced the concept of dissociation and a model of pathology that was passive (associated with reduced psychic cohesion), with the paradigm of an active defensive process he termed repression, and an understanding that psychological discomfort was the outcome of int

Depression and Mania in Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Episode duration, recurrence rates, and time spent in manic and depressive phases of bipolar disorder (BD) is not well defined for subtypes of the disorder. METHODS: We reviewed the course, timing, and duration of episodes of mania and depression among 1130 clinically treated DSM-IV-TR BD patients of various types, and compared duration and rates as well as total proportion of time in depressive versus manic episodes during 16.7 average years at risk. RESULTS: As expected, episodes of depressions were much longer than manias, but episode-duration did not differ among BD diagnosti

Chronic Conditions: Beckett, Bergson and Samuel Johnson.

This article analyses the work of the twentieth-century late modernist Samuel Beckett, in light of the turn-of-the-century anti-rationalist Henri Bergson (1859-1941) and the eighteenth-century neoclassicist Samuel Johnson (1709-1784). What unites these three very different thinkers is a concern over habitual, automatic and involuntary behavior, which in all three cases has a distinctly neurological dimension. Beckett's writing explores the Bergsonian notion, informed by medicine and experimental psychology, of the limitations of agency, of "the deep-seated recalcitrance of matter," and of the

[Historical and biological approaches to the study of Modern Age French plague mass burials].

The "Black Death" and subsequent epidemics from 1346 to the early 18th century spread from the Caspian Sea all over Europe six hundred years after the outbreak of the Justinian plague (541-767 AD). Plague has been one of the most devastating infectious diseases that affected the humankind and has caused approximately 200 million human deaths historically. Here we describe the different approaches adopted in the study of several French putative plague mass burials dating to the Modern Age (16th-18th centuries). Through complementation of historical, archaeological and paleobiological data, ampl

[The history of the speckled monster].

It demolished 3 empires, killed princess and peasants indifferently, blinded its victims and scarred them for life, changed the outcome of military conflicts and eventually induced the discovery of the vaccination technique. Although conquered in the late seventies of the 20th century, the spirit of "the speckled monster"--smallpox as it was called due to its coetaneous manifestation and high death rate, still roam the earth as a bioterrorist threat. From China to Turkey, from England to the U.S.A., smallpox plague history traverses nations and physicians. This paper discusses the history of t

[A comparative study on Inoculation in China and Japan].

There are two ways of planting smallpox. One is inoculation and the other is vaccination. Chinese inoculation was invented in China and was in use in the country up to the mid-20 th century. Inoculation in Japan was brought from China in 1744, and it produced fairly good results until the mid-19th century, when vaccination was introduced to the country and spread rapidly. Inoculation then was forgotten almost completed, despite the satisfactory result it had produced. Undoubtedly, however, inoculation affected the rapid spread of vaccination in Japan. Looking back on the historical process of
