Ethel Browne Harvey and Hilde Pröscholdt Mangold did pioneering research in embryology, Ida Henrietta Hyde helped develop the first microelectrodes for the stimulation of single cells, and Marthe Gautier had a vital role in discovering that Down syndrome is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. So why are their names so little known by the scientific community at large?

Professor Nieuwenhuys is among the great neuroanatomists and a historical figure of the later 20th and early 21st centuries. His legacy is manifold. There is the tangible legacy of the multiple scientific volumes, at once physical and conceptual entities. There is the generational legacy of handed-on scientific and intellectual traditions, and there is the legacy of specific scientific directions. In this brief Commentary, we highlight just two examples of his scientific contributions.

The field of hypnosis has intrigued clinicians and researchers alike for more than 200 years. Below, a review of hypnosis is presented from historical, theoretical, experimental, and clinical perspectives in order to provide those readers less aware of the field with a broad foundation. The literature reveals that while theoretically driven experimental research has led to groundbreaking clinical applications, there remains much to be done regarding dissemination of efficacious interventions and our understanding of underlying mechanisms responsible for observed effects. The goal is to inspire

Philip Alexander, MD, is a native Texan, retired physician, and accomplished musician and artist. After 41 years as an internal medicine physician, Dr. Phil retired from his practice in College Station in 2016. A lifelong musician and former music professor, he often performs as an oboe soloist for the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra. He began exploring visual art in 1980, evolving from pencil sketches-including an official White House portrait of President Ronald Reagan-to the computer-generated drawings featured in this journal. His images, which first appeared in this journal in the spring

My career began with the exciting beginnings of cognitive psychology. It took me to memory, mental representations, categorization, spatial cognition, language, event cognition, stories, discourse, visualizations, comics, gesture, joint action, creativity, design, and more. On the way I enjoyed collaborations with friends and students in many areas and many countries. I am slowing down just as brain, AI, computational models, and big data are taking over the field, bringing new methods and new ways of thinking and, with that, new talent and inspired minds.

John James Rickard Macleod provided the facilities and support that enabled Frederick Banting and Charles Best to perform the experimental work that resulted in the discovery of insulin. This review considers Macleod's intellectual contribution to the initial discovery in light of his previously expressed opinions on glucose metabolism. He acknowledged the likely existence of an internal secretion from the pancreas and was aware of previous work in the area; however, seeking it was not among his research priorities. His advice in the immediate aftermath of the discovery does not appear to have

Andrew K (Andy) Burroughs passed away in March 2014 at the early age of 60 years. Andy was one of the last of the great all round giants of hepatology. He was a consummate physician, clinical investigator and educator. Over a period of 35 years at the Royal Free Hospital Liver Unit he produced a prodigious quantity of original research and made major contributions in many areas of hepatology including portal hypertension, liver transplantation and chronic liver disease. His work on the methodology of clinical trials is carried on by the Baveno consensus meetings. From bedside clinical mastery

In 1898 William Anderson and Johannes Fabry described the red-purple maculopapular skin lesions characteristic for Fabry disease and also mentioned the presence of proteinuria. Four decades later Maximiliaan Ruiter concluded that angiokeratoma corporis diffusum is the cutaneous manifestation of an inherited systemic internal disease. In 1947 autopsy findings of two cases who died from uraemia revealed sclerosis of glomeruli. At this time the presence of a thesaurismosis was also considered. The first renal needle biopsy in 1958 showed vacuolation and distension of the cells of the glomerular t

William Boog Leishman was born 150 years ago. Although his description of "small round or oval bodies" in a smear from the spleen pulp of a soldier who had died of kala-azar was not the first one of Leishmania and although Leishman did not make the diagnosis of kala-azar and misinterpreted the microorganisms to be trypanosomes, his article became the springboard for a series of studies that, within a few months, established Leishmania as a previously unknown genus of protozoa and led to appreciation of the clinical spectrum of kala-azar and the relationship between cutaneous and visceral leish

Ernest Duchesne (1874-1912) completed his thesis on microbial antagonism in 1897 in Lyon. His work lay unknown for fifty years, but on being brought to light led to his being credited with having discovered penicillin prior to Alexander Fleming. The claims surrounding Duchesne are examined here both from the strictly microbiological perspective, and also for what they reveal about how the process of discovery is frequently misconstrued. The combined weight of evidence presented here militates strongly against the possibility that the species of Penicillium that Duchesne worked with produced pe

History of oral hypoglycemic agents (OHA) started in 1942 that was 20 years delayed to the discovery of insulin. The first two OHAs (sulfonylurea and biguanide) were discovered by chance. Ancient knowledge regarding antidiabetic agents present in nature is significant for the development of some drugs. For instance, principal components of biguanide, α-glucosidase inhibitors are contained in French lilac and mulberry leaves respectively, that are ancient diabetic medications. Thiazolidinediones, incretin related drugs, were discovered by a result of great effort paid to structural ingenuity an

Historians and epidemiologists agree that seven pandemics of cholera have occurred from 1817 to the present time. However they do not always agree on the date of onset and extinction of several of the pandemics. Cholera appeared for the first time in Europe and therefore in Italy in the first half of the 19th century. In this context, the population of the Puglia region (Italy) was first affected by cholera starting in 1836, during the second pandemic, and then again during the following pandemics and in more recent local outbreaks in 1973 and 1994. This article describes the impact of the dis

Terrance J. Beveridge (TJB) was a professor at the University of Guelph for nearly three decades. He died on September 10, 2007. TJB was a pioneer who pushed the frontier of microbiology and bacteriology. His legacy includes 22 postdoctoral scholars and 24 graduate students. His two dozen graduate student progeny have, in turn, mentored at least 52 additional graduate students. This paper presents TJB's pedagogical tree and touches on many of the topics that he studied during his life including: bacteria cell surfaces, biomineralization, biofilms, and geomicrobiology.

Primary cilia have had a long research history since 1898, but only in the last few years have investigations become intense. Only a few people took an interest in them until recently, when the consequences of their agenesis or dysfunction suddenly became apparent to all. Their function changed overnight from being speculative to being fully "acknowledged" as sensory, and the consequence of their lacking sensory function(s) led to a bonanza for cell and molecular biologists interested in the impact on clinical disease and disorder. Furthermore, once the medical profession had insight not just
