Paranasal gossypiboma mimicking an aggressive tumor: a case report.

Even if gossypibomas are extremely rare in the Oro-Maxillofacial region, they should be evoked in bizarre tumors when repeated histology tests are not contributive, especially in patients with a history of dento-sinusal surgery. As it is recommended in general surgery, gauzes should be carefully counted when used in dentistry.

The microscopic (optical and SEM) examination of dental calculus deposits (DCD). Potential interest in forensic anthropology of a bio-archaeological method.

This article describes the potential interest in forensic anthropology of the microscopic analysis of dental calculus deposits (DCD), a calcified residue frequently found on the surface of teeth. Its sampling and analysis seem straightforward and relatively reproducible. Samples came from archaeological material (KHB-1 Ra's al-Khabbah and RH-5 Ra's al-Hamra, two Prehistoric graveyards located in the Sultanate of Oman, dated between the 5th and 4th millennium B.C.; Montenzio Vecchia, an Etruscan-Celtic necropolis from the north of Italy, dated between the 5th and 3rd century B.C.; body rests of

[Dental aspects of general symptoms in the 18th century].

In the 18th century, numerous diseases with symptoms of oral cavity were cured by chirurgien-dentist, barber-surgeons, or tooth drawer. The so called "dentitio difficilis" was blamed for the high children mortality, therefore gum cut or use of leeches was advised as a treatment. Both acute and chronic type of gum inflammation was called scurvy. It seems that the mechanical removal of plaque was enough to cure the scurvy as it was written in advertisements from that time. Syphilis was present in the everyday life throughout centuries, and assumed to cause different stigmas in the oral cavity. T

General medicine and surgery for dental practitioners. Part 2--metabolic disorders.

It is important for dental practitioners to have a basic knowledge of the more common metabolic disorders as some may impact on the practice of dentistry. Many of these disorders do not have overt clinical signs. Taking a thorough medical history and where necessary, liaising with the patient's physician, is particularly important.

Evaluating a dental patient for local anesthesia allergy.

The determination of particular allergens with respect to local anesthetics may present difficulty within the realm of clinical dentistry. A case is presented that dramatizes the difficulties in determining the specific allergen after a patient undergoing several episodes of restorative dentistry with several varying regimens of local anesthesia repeatedly reacted with skin rashes and pruritus approximately 36 hours after treatment. The patient was a 76-year-old man with a complex medical history. A challenge procedure performed with a commercial formulation of local anesthesia resulted in a p

Oral effects of steroid therapy in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus: report of case.

Steroids are used extensively in modern medicine and dentistry for their anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. However, this class of drugs can lead to adverse effects on other organs. In this case, developmental and functional disturbances of the primary and permanent dentition are seen. The patient's dental development and pharmacological history suggest prednisone as the offending agent.

Technological advances in caries diagnosis.

Understanding the nature of the caries lesion, disease activity, and the patient's caries risk are all used in determining the nature of dental care to be delivered. An examination should include a health and social history and clinical examination using appropriate technologies. This allows proper assessment and suggests a logical management intervention. Minimally invasive dentistry is a concept based on an assessment of a patient's caries risk and the application of the current therapies to prevent, control, and treat the disease. The history of the dental examination and the variety of cur

The use of CDA best management practices and amalgam separators to improve the management of dental wastewater.

Concerns over the persistence and effects of mercury in the environment, particularly in wastewater, have increased significantly over the past decade. Because mercury is a component of dental amalgam, comprising about 50 percent of amalgam among other metals, in recent years the concern has affected dental practices and even educational curricula in the dental schools. While numbers vary widely from area to area, on average, it is estimated dentistry contributes less than 1 percent of the mercury generated from human activity to the environment. Despite dentistry's low contribution to the env

COVID-19 pandemic: multilevel dental technical guidelines based on new scientific evidence.

The COVID-19 pandemic imposed restrictive measures on dentistry in different regions of the world, ranging from stoppage of care to only permission for urgent and emergency dental services. Thus, new biosafety guidelines for resuming activities, whether in single dental offices, large clinics or dental education activities, are urgently required. In this sense, herein, guidelines that incorporate common points of the main protocols found in the literature for the resumption of dental activities at their different levels, whether in the scope of care or education, are presented. Furthermore, we

Fibrin sealants in implant and periodontal treatment: case presentations.

Sutures are traditionally used to close flaps associated with periodontal and implant procedures. When implants are placed in the esthetic zone or when periodontal plastic surgical procedures are performed, fibrin sealants may be a viable alternative to closing flaps with sutures. This article describes the history of using fibrin sealants in medicine and dentistry and discusses their uses. Patients treated with sealants are presented.

[General medical concepts for the dental treatment of aging patients].

Patients, particularly older ones, with internal medical diseases, may be hazards for the dental treatment. Therefore, anamnestic data seem to be most important in order to uncover the hazard patient (diabetes, survived heart attacks, anticoagulation, rheumatic heart affections, hypertonics, allergies). Local anesthesia can be another problem, because it may lead to collapse (psychogenous or from anaphylactic shock). Focal infection, although in general overrated in its importance for the general organism, may pose some problems before heart surgery and antibiotic therapy previously may seem n

The dilemma of different dental degrees: DDS and DMD.

Although the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) evolved from the surgical and the Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) from the medical (DMD) roots of the dental profession, dental schools in the US currently award both degrees, verified as equivalent by finding no differences between them in standards of admissions, accreditation, or state licensure requirements while continuing to be subjectively perceived as different enough to create professional and public confusion. In contrast, Doctors of Osteopathy (DOs) and Doctors of Medicine (MDs) are both objectively and subjectively perceived as diff
