OBJECTIVE: Hoarding is common in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and OCD with hoarding may have poorer prognostic features than OCD without hoarding. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between multifaceted impulsivity and hoarding symptoms in individuals with OCD. This relationship is important to be able to understand the psychopathological mechanisms of hoarding symptoms in OCD patients.
METHODS: The study included 136 individuals with OCD classified as OCD with high hoarding symptoms (OCDwHH, n = 41) and OCD with low/none hoarding symptoms (OCDwLH, n = 95), toge

Hoarding disorder (HD), characterized by difficulty parting with possessions and functionally impairing clutter, affects 2-6% of the population. Originally considered part of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), HD became a distinct diagnostic entity in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) in 2013. While sleep impacts OCD, little is known about sleep in HD. As HD patients often report poor sleep in clinical settings, understanding global subjective sleep quality and disturbances may lead to novel therapeutic targets. To address this gap, the authors used a sample o

OBJECTIVE: Whereas a triple vulnerability model has been used to evaluate several anxiety- and mood-related conditions, no research has purposefully examined hoarding from this perspective.
METHOD: Using a multivariate approach, the current study evaluated the unique relations between hoarding and a general biological (e.g., neuroticism), psychological (e.g., anxiety sensitivity), and hoarding-specific vulnerability (e.g., saving cognitions) within 526 individuals.
RESULTS: A structural equation model (SEM) including all three vulnerabilities as well as hoarding symptoms provided good fit to

OBJECTIVE: Compulsive hoarding is a debilitating problem that is often associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. However, the precise nosology of compulsive hoarding has yet to be determined.
METHOD: Participants were 25 patients with severe compulsive hoarding with OCD and 27 patients with severe compulsive hoarding without OCD. Both groups were carefully characterized and compared on the following sociodemographic and clinical variables: precise phenomenology of hoarding behavior, severity of other OCD symptoms, axis I and axis II psy

The present study investigated the relation of compulsive hoarding to other obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms in a sample of 162 patients with OCD. Obsessions and compulsions reported on the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for DSM-IV were submitted to an exploratory factor analysis. Results suggested a four-factor model: "Certainty," "Contamination," "Obsessions," and "Numbers/Ordering." Hoarding did not load on any factor. The sample was divided into three groups: pure hoarding, nonhoarding OCD, and mixed OCD and hoarding. The hoarding group endorsed significantly less anxiety

UNLABELLED: Although hoarding disorder (HD) is included in the DSM-5 in the obsessive-compulsive and related disorders chapter, in the last few years, HD has been consistently associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Some studies on HD patients show higher comorbidity with ADHD than with OCD and some studies on ADHD patients found significant higher rates of HD symptoms compared to the general population. However, the aim of the present study was to be the first direct comparison of the prevalence of HD and HD symptoms across adults with a primary diagnosis of ADHD, OCD

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with hoarding symptoms often report laborious routines of reviewing and destroying paperwork prior to discarding, citing fears of identity theft if personal information is discarded. While fears of identity theft seem likely to be elevated in hoarding disorder, it is unclear if these fears are elevated beyond what is normative for older adults, and whether such fears may be related to third factors.
METHOD: In the current study we sought to explore whether fears of identity theft were higher among 103 individuals high in hoarding symptoms as compared with 59 non-hoar

This review provides a conceptual and empirical overview of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) as a treatment for hoarding. ACT uses a functional contextual model to conceptualize hoarding as a narrowed behavioral repertoire caused by psychological inflexibility. ACT for hoarding focuses on fostering psychological flexibility to expand the behavioral repertoire in ways that align with values. ACT can be tailored to address common clinical issues in hoarding such as problems in insight and motivation, relational difficulties, and executive dysfunction. Initial evidence from three clinical

Hoarding Disorder (HD) is a prominent and disabling neuropsychiatric condition defined by the inability to discard objects resulting in impairing levels of clutter. The prevalence rate is 2-6 % and increases with age. The aging Veteran population is a high risk group for impairment associated with HD. Medical and psychiatric comorbidities as well as associated rates of disability and poor quality of life are very common in both HD and the related disorder of OCD. We examined rates of HD and OCD diagnoses at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. Data were obtained from medical records for all Vet

Executive functions (EF) deficits are hypothesized to be a core contributor to hoarding symptoms. EF have been studied in adult hoarding populations, but studies in youth are lacking. The current study compared multiple EF subdomains between youth with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and youth with OCD and hoarding symptoms. Forty youth (8-18 years old) with a primary diagnosis of OCD were recruited. Participants were divided by hoarding severity on the Child Saving Inventory (CSI) into either the "hoarding group" (upper 33.3%) or the "low-hoarding group" (lower 66.7%). Groups were compare

Hoarding Disorder (HD) is under recognised and under-treated. Though HD develops by early adulthood, patients present only later in life, resulting in research based largely on samples of predominantly older females. Whilst formerly associated with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), it is now recognised that individuals with HD often have inattention symptoms reminiscent of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Here, we investigated HD in adults with ADHD. Patients in an ADHD clinic (n = 88) reported on ADHD, HD and OCD-related symptoms, and compared with age, gender and education

Objectives: Hoarding disorder (HD) is conceptualized as a fear-based disorder and exposure to sorting/discarding possessions is a core part of treatment. However, there has been no investigation of age-related differences in emotional reaction to sorting. The objective of this study was to explore the association between age and affective response during a sorting task. Methods: Forty-nine adults with HD completed a standardized sorting task. Participants reported their current emotion before and after the sorting task and reported their subjective distress throughout the task. Results: Older pa

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a severe and persistent mental illness characterized by extreme difficulty parting with possessions and considerable clutter that can result in dangerous living conditions. HD poses a considerable public health burden; however, treatment for HD remains relatively limited, as many individuals do not respond to treatment and/or do not maintain treatment gains, suggesting there are important factors not being adequately addressed. In particular, one area that is not well-understood nor well-integrated into cognitive behavioral models is the pathological attachment indivi

This study examined the function of hoarding behaviors and the relations between hoarding and a series of cognitive and affective processes in the moment using ecological momentary assessment. A matched-groups design was used to compare college students with higher hoarding symptoms (n = 31) and matched controls (n = 29). The two groups did not differ in what function they reported acquiring served, and positive automatic reinforcement was the most commonly reported function in both groups. Engaging in hoarding-relevant behaviors did not predict change in positive or negative affect when contr

Hoarding disorder, newly included as a separate diagnostic entity in the Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders section of DSM-5, has been reported to have significantly different symptoms and etiology than obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the validity of this new diagnosis in China - where the storing of possessions is sanctioned and normalized - remains to be proven. We considered available data about pathological hoarding in East Asia and found the condition to be relatively common and symptomatically similar to that reported in western countries. We conclude that the 'Hoar

BACKGROUND: While collecting may be a normal behaviour, hoarding is a symptom of various psychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). Although anecdotal reports suggest that hoarding is not uncommon in geriatric psychiatry populations, its psychopathological correlates in such samples have not been well characterised.
METHODS: The presence of clinically significant hoarding symptoms was screened for in 100 consecutive patients in a geriatric psychiatry inpatient unit. Both patient and collateral histories were obtai

Hoarding disorder is a complex mental health condition that is increasingly recognised as both a health concern for the individual and a wider public health issue. Supporting individuals with hoarding disorder requires multi-agency intervention, involving collaboration between local authority environmental health teams, fire safety experts, mental health specialists and health and social care professionals, including community nurses. This article examines hoarding behaviour through a health promotion lens, with a focus on the role of the nurse. The author discusses potential underlying causes

Attention appears to be impaired in hoarding disorder (HD), although it remains unclear whether this can be conceptualized as co-occurring ADHD or intrinsic to hoarding pathology. Self-reported cognitive impairment tends to be inconsistent in HD, with individuals tending to overestimate cognitive impairment compared with performance on neuropsychological tests. A behavioral index of attentional impairment during decision making, ex-Gaussian modeling of reaction times, has been commonly used as an index of inattention in ADHD, with more skew (i.e., higher tau values) suggestive of attentional l
