BACKGROUND: Dental students must master endodontic anatomy, radiographic diagnostics, and treatment strategies early in their clinical training-yet traditional teaching methods, including two-dimensional radiographs, often fail to effectively convey complex spatial structures. Hologram technology has emerged as a promising tool for three-dimensional visualization in dental education. The aim of the study was to compare the classification accuracy of dental students using holograms versus conventional periapical radiographs in identifying endodontic structures.

Sentinel lymph node biopsy offers a less invasive alternative to full lymphadenectomy in endometrial cancer, reducing complications while maintaining diagnostic accuracy. This case report highlights the integration of holography and augmented reality (AR) in a 34-year-old woman undergoing robotic-assisted surgery for endometrial cancer. Preoperative imaging combined with single-photon emission computed tomography and computed tomography identified sentinel lymph nodes, which were visualized using mixed reality (MR) technology. This approach enabled the surgical team to accurately understand th

PURPOSE: To develop and validate a holography based vision simulator for the demonstration of expected postoperative vision corresponding to monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) to cataract patients before surgery.
METHODS: An artificial eye model is used to measure the optical performance of different IOL types. The resultant aberrations and degradations are then modeled using phase holograms and shown to subjects on a holographic display. We measure the contrast and resolution loss, halos around the light sources, and point spread function (PSF) corresponding to three different

Acousto-optic imaging (AOI) combines light and ultrasound (US) to probe the optical properties inside a multiple scattering medium, such as biological tissue, with a resolution set by the ultrasound. However, in dynamic media like tissue, the motion of scatterers decorrelates the US-tagged optical field, broadening its spectral width and reducing the efficiency of holography-based detection schemes. Speckle decorrelation is usually considered a limitation, as it degrades the signal-to-noise ratio. Here, we show that, despite this, it can be exploited as a source of contrast. Using four-phase d

Neuronal ensembles, i.e. coactive groups of neurons, have been long postulated to be functional building blocks of cortical circuits and units of the neural code. Calcium imaging of neuronal populations has demonstrated the widespread existence of spontaneous and sensory-evoked ensembles in cortical circuits in vivo. The development of two-photon optical techniques to simultaneously record and activate neurons with single cell resolution ("piano" experiments) has revealed the existence of pattern completion neurons, which can trigger an entire ensemble, and demonstrated a causal relation betwe

SIGNIFICANCE: Particle field holography is a versatile technique to determine the size and distribution of moving or stationary particles in air or in a liquid without significant disturbance of the sample volume. Although this technique is applied in biological sample analysis, it is limited to small sample volumes, thus increasing the number of measurements per sample. In this work, we characterize the maximum achievable volume limit based on the specification of a given sensor to realize the development of a potentially low-cost, single-shot, large-volume holographic microscope.

Acoustic waves exert forces when they interact with matter. Shaping ultrasound fields precisely in 3D thus allows control over the force landscape and should permit particulates to fall into place to potentially form whole 3D objects in "one shot." This is promising for rapid prototyping, most notably biofabrication, since conventional methods are typically slow and apply mechanical or chemical stress on biological cells. Here, we realize the generation of compact holographic ultrasound fields and demonstrate the one-step assembly of matter using acoustic forces. We combine multiple holographi

Nanotechnology is increasingly being applied in many emerging technologies, ranging from metamaterials to next-generation nanodrugs. A key ingredient for its success is the ability to specifically tailor ultrafast nanoscale light-matter interactions over very large areas. Unfortunately, dynamic imaging by ultrafast nanoscopy so far remains limited to very small 2D areas. This shortcoming prevents connecting single-particle observations with large-scale functionality. Here, we address this experimental challenge by combining concepts of ultrafast spectroscopy, wide-field nanoscopy, and digital

Wavefront shaping with liquid-crystal spatial light modulators (LC-SLMs) is frequently hindered by a remaining fraction of undiffracted light, the so-called "zero-order." This contribution is all the more detrimental in configurations for which the LC-SLM is Fourier conjugated to a sample by a lens, because in these cases this undiffracted light produces a diffraction-limited spot at the image focal plane. In this Letter we propose to minimize two-photon (2P) excitation of the sample, resulting from this unmodulated light, by introducing optical aberrations to the excitation beam. Aberrations

Range-selective digital holography (RSDH) is a coherent imaging technique that enables the reconstruction of digital holograms at tunable distances while suppressing the contributions from objects at other ranges. This selectivity is achieved by combining digital holography with frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) signals commonly found in lidar to produce a temporally modulated interference pattern. By tuning the local-oscillator frequency according to the object distance, a temporally stable hologram is formed at the desired range, which can then be recorded on a sensor array. The res

Unknown particle screening-including virus and nanoparticles-are keys in medicine, industry, and also in water pollutant determination. Here, RYtov MIcroscopy for Nanoparticles Identification (RYMINI) is introduced, a staining-free, non-invasive, and non-destructive optical approach that is merging holographic label-free 3D tracking with high-sensitivity quantitative phase imaging into a compact optical setup. Dedicated to the identification and then characterization of single nano-object in solution, it is compatible with highly demanding environments, such as level 3 biological laboratories,

One of the most common methods for reconstructing three-dimensional (3D) images of real or computer-generated objects is digital and computer-generated holography, respectively. Both techniques rely on the use of electro-optical devices that modify the phase or amplitude of light fields in a controlled manner, the so-called spatial light modulators. However, given that holography typically requires coherent light sources, a common problem with three-dimensional projection is the crosstalk between the layers that make up the 3D object. This limits full-depth control and directly affects image q

The morphological and mechanical characteristics of red blood cells (RBCs) largely vary depending on the occurrence of hematologic disorders. Variations in the rheological properties of RBCs affect the dynamic motions of RBCs, especially their rotational behavior. However, conventional techniques for measuring the orientation of biconcave-shaped RBCs still have some technical limitations, including complicated optical setups, complex post data processing, and low throughput. In this study, we propose a novel image-based technique for measuring 3D position and orientation of normal RBCs using d

Progressive visual loss is the most common neurologic finding in osteopetrosis. Several mechanisms may explain this phenomenon, including compression of the optic nerves caused by bony overgrowth of the optic canals and retinal degeneration. We report a child with osteopetrosis and progressive visual loss, even though patent optic canals were demonstrated by computed tomography and digital holography. This patient's visual loss was caused by increased intracranial pressure secondary, to obstruction of cerebral venous outflow at the jugular foramen. This case points to the importance of a full

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) is an emerging non-invasive neuromodulation modality that offers deep brain access with high spatial precision. However, its broader application is limited by the difficulty of reliably generating complex transcranial acoustic fields, particularly for multi-target stimulation through the skull. These limitations can lead to focal distortion, off-target exposure, and reduced reliability of neuromodulation outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, we introduce a physics-aware thickness-only acoustic hologram (TOAH) technique for precise trans

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Holotomography is an advanced imaging technique that enables high-resolution, three-dimensional visualization of microscopic specimens without the need for fixation or staining. Here we aim to apply holotomography technology to image live Hypsibius exemplaris in their native state, avoiding invasive sample preparation procedures and phototoxic effects associated with other imaging modalities.
METHODS: We use a low concentration of 7% ethanol for tardigrade sedation and sample preparation. Holotomographic images were obtained and reconstructed using the Tomocube HT-X1 sy

SIGNIFICANCE: Digital holographic microscopy is widely used to get the quantitative phase information of transparent cells.
AIM: However, the sample phase is superimposed with aberrations. To quantify the phase information, aberrations need to be fully compensated.
APPROACH: We propose a technique to obtain aberration-free phase imaging, using the derivative-based principal component analysis (dPCA).
RESULTS: With dPCA, almost all aberrations can be extracted and compensated without requirements on background segmentation, making it efficient and convenient.
CONCLUSIONS: It solves the prob

Using canine temporal bone, perforations were surgically prepared at the anterior, inferior and posterior parts of the tympanic membrane, and the influences of these perforations on the tympanic vibration were observed and analyzed by holographic interferometry. Normal canine tympanic membrane had its respective single maximum amplitude points at its anterior and posterior parts at a frequency from the low compass to 2 kHz or so and showed a concentric circular vibration pattern centering mainly there around. At 3 and 4 kHz or so, the posterior and anterior parts began to show their respective

Digital in-line holography is used to visualize particle motion within a cylindrical micropipe. Analytical expression of the intensity distribution recorded in the CCD sensor plane is derived using the generalized Huygens-Fresnel integral associated with the ABCD matrices formalism. Holograms obtained in a 100microm in diameter micropipe are then reconstructed using fractional Fourier transformation. Astigmatism brought by the cylindrical micropipe is finally used to select a three dimensional region of interest in the microflow and thus to improve axial localization of objects located within
