Changes in plasma IL4, TNFá and CRP in response to regular passive smoking at home among healthy school children in Khartoum, Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Regular exposure to tobacco smoke at home causes airway inflammation and altered cytokine regulation; however, there is variation between individuals of different countries. OBJECTIVE: To determine effects of passive smoking on plasma IL4, TNFá, and CRP in healthy male school-children in Khartoum. METHODS: A total of 135 male school-pupils (69 passive smokers and 66 non-smokers) were selected randomly from three primary schools for boys in Khartoum. Information about smoking history was collected from each pupil and his parents using a questionnaire. Plasma CRP, IL4 and TNFá were

A comparison of atomoxetine administered as once versus twice daily dosing on the school and home functioning of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This secondary analysis examined the efficacy and tolerability of atomoxetine (ATX) dosed once (QD) versus twice (BID) daily in 55 children aged 6-12 with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: The original 8-week trial was designed to assess the benefits of adding behavioral therapy to ATX. In it, all subjects were treated openly with ATX, with 50% randomly assigned to additional behavioral treatments. Every subject was started on QD dosing with a target dose of 1.2 mg/kg per day. A switch to BID dosing was allowed at study midpoint to improve tolerability and e

Associations between Home- and School-Based Violent Experiences and the Development of Sexual Behavior in Young Adolescent Girls in the Rural Southern Region of Malawi.

Studies show that adolescent girls who experience violence grow up with fear and develop survival mechanisms that increase their susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections including HIV. However, the relationship between violence and the development of sexual behavior in young adolescent girls is under-investigated. We examined the Malawi Schooling and Adolescent Study data to explore the associations between home- and school-based violence and sexual behaviors in 416 young adolescent girls in rural Southern Malawi. Bivariate Logistic Regression analysis was applied to determine associa

Influence of context on engagement with COVID-19 testing: a scoping review of barriers and facilitators to testing for healthcare workers, care homes and schools in the UK.

OBJECTIVE: The UK government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic included a 'test, trace and isolate' strategy. Testing services for healthcare workers, care homes and schools accounted for the greatest spend and volume of tests. We reviewed relevant literature to identify common and unique barriers and facilitators to engaging with each of these testing services. DESIGN: Scoping review. SEARCH STRATEGY: PubMed, Scopus and the WHO COVID-19 Research Database were searched for evidence published between 1 January 2020 and 7 November 2022. This was supplemented by evidence identified via free-t

Mellansjö school-home. Psychopathic children admitted 1928-1940, their social adaptation over 30 years: a longitudinal prospective follow-up.

The school-home for "psychopathic" children, Mellansjö, was founded in 1928. The initiator was Alice Hellström, a teacher and physician. She was a child psychiatric pioneer in Sweden. She had no formal education in child and adolescent psychiatry but with support from Professor of Paediatrics Isaac Jundell she received education in pediatrics and from Professor of Psychiatry Bror Gadelius she was trained in psychiatry. Hellström made a study trip to Europe where she visited child psychiatry clinics. She visited Summerhill in England and professors Aichhorn and Lazar in Austria. When Hellström

Sluggish cognitive tempo and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) inattention in the home and school contexts: Parent and teacher invariance and cross-setting validity.

This study examined whether sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) inattention (IN) symptoms demonstrated cross-setting invariance and unique associations with symptom and impairment dimensions across settings (i.e., home SCT and ADHD-IN uniquely predicting school symptom and impairment dimensions, and vice versa). Mothers, fathers, primary teachers, and secondary teachers rated SCT, ADHD-IN, ADHD-hyperactivity/impulsivity (HI), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), anxiety, depression, academic impairment, social impairment, and peer rejection dimens

School- and home-based hybrid exercise intervention to prevent summer fitness loss in children: protocol for a feasibility study of the keep moving in a structured summer programme.

INTRODUCTION: Schools are key settings to intervene for the purpose of health promotion in children. However, the effectiveness of school-based interventions remains limited, potentially related to the obesogenic behaviours observed during holidays as posited by the structured days hypothesis. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility, process evaluation and preliminary efficacy of the keep moving in a structured summer (KEMOSS) intervention among Chinese children. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The KEMOSS intervention is an 8-week hybrid programme comprising two digitally supported home-based phase

Does a school-based intervention to engage parents change opportunity for handwashing with soap at home? Practical experience from the Mikono Safi trial in Northwestern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: School-based de-worming is advocated as a strategy for reducing the burden of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections among children. However, re-infection tends to occur rapidly, suggesting that comprehensive water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) improvements may be needed to prevent this. We qualitatively assessed the influence of parental engagement activities on parents' motivation to improve WASH infrastructure and hygiene practices at home in the context of a school-based de-worming programme. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a longitudinal qualitative study nested within the Mi

Personal radiofrequency electromagnetic field exposure of adolescents in the Greater London area in the SCAMP cohort and the association with restrictions on permitted use of mobile communication technologies at school and at home.

Personal measurements of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) have been used in several studies to characterise personal exposure in daily life, but such data are limitedly available for adolescents, and not yet for the United Kingdom (UK). In this study, we aimed to characterise personal exposure to RF-EMF in adolescents and to study the association between exposure and rules applied at school and at home to restrict wireless communication use, likely implemented to reduce other effects of mobile technology (e.g. distraction). We measured exposure to RF-EMF for 16 common frequency b

Feasibility of an Emergency Department-Based Two-Step ADHD Screening Pathway in Primary School-Age Children Presenting with Home Accidents: A Prospective Two-Center Case-Control Study.

Background/Objectives: Emergency department (ED) visits for pediatric home accidents may provide an opportunity to identify children who warrant evaluation for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study primarily evaluated the feasibility of a two-step ED-based ADHD screening and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry referral pathway. A secondary exploratory objective was to compare the frequency of confirmed ADHD between children presenting with home accidents and non-injured ED controls. Methods: This prospective, two-center case-control study was conducted in two emergency depart

Issues related to human immunodeficiency virus transmission in schools, child care, medical settings, the home, and community. American Academy of Pediatrics. Committee of Pediatric AIDS and Committee on Infectious Diseases.

Current recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for infection control practices to prevent transmission of blood-borne pathogens, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in hospitals, other medical settings, schools, and child care facilities, are reviewed and explained. Hand-washing is essential, whether or not gloves are used, and gloves should be used when contact with blood or blood-containing body fluids may occur. In hospitalized children, the 1996 recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) should be implemented as modified in the 199
