BACKGROUND: Congestive cardiac failure (CCF) has emerged as a major public health problem worldwide and imposes an escalating burden on the health care system.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the causes and mortality rate of CCF in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), south Nigeria, over a five-year period from January 2001 to December 2005.

BACKGROUND: Erythema nodosum (EN) is the most frequent acute nodular hypodermatitis. Etiologies of EN are varied although a similar clinical presentation. The aim of our study is to establish epidemio-clinical characteristics of EN in 103 patients.

OBJECTIVES: This study describes the natural history of patients with polycystic liver disease, a rare disorder characterized by multiple hepatic cysts.
METHODS: Cases were identified through review of charts from a hepatology practice, a hepatobiliary surgery practice and a retrospective chart review of inpatient charts from 1990 to 2002. All patients had greater than four simple liver cysts without infectious etiology. Medical records were reviewed for history, physical examination, imaging, and laboratory data. Patients' family practitioners provided follow-up.

During 1990 and 1991, 380 faecal samples were collected from horses with diarrhoea. Eighty-two consecutive cases of acute leukaemias in adult Ethiopians were admitted to the Tikur Anbessa (Black Lion) Hospital, a teaching and referral hospital in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, from January 1982 to December 1992. Thailand has a large domestic and stray dog population and Buddhist cultural beliefs encourage feeding and protection of stray animals. Dog bites are common injuries encountered in emergency rooms throughout the country. A prospective study of such bites seen at a teaching hospital in Bangkok revealed that: (1) dog bites represent 5.3% of injuries seen in the emergency room; (2) the majority occur on the street, are inflicated by stray dogs and are interpreted by the victim as unprovoked. A 10-year review of infants with encephalocele was carried out in a multicentered teaching hospital. Out of 23,438 infants seen within the period, only 12 cases of encephalocele were seen, giving an incidence of 0.5/1000 births. Nine (75%) of patients had occipital encephalocele, two (16.7%) occipitoparietal and one (8.3%) fronto-nasal. The safety of laparoscopic cholecystectomy and the necessary training are serious concerns. This report describes both the surgical experience and the training and credentialling process at a private community-based teaching hospital. The study of the pattern of osteoarthritis in different populations may yield valuable aetiological clues and also allow subtypes to be defined. Over one year 252 osteoarthritic joints from 140 patients seen at a West African teaching hospital were prospectively reviewed. The knee was the joint most often affected. Hip and hand disease, as well as Heberden's nodes, were uncommon. Joint disease was predominantly monoarticular; no patient had three or more sites affected.
