Climatic conditions and prevalence of melanistic snakes-contrasting effects of warm springs and mild winters.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges that wildlife is facing. Rapid shifts in climatic conditions may accelerate evolutionary changes in populations as a result of strong selective pressure. Most studies focus on the impact of climatic conditions on phenologies and annual cycles, whereas there are fewer reports of empirical support for climate-driven changes in the phenotypic variability of free-living populations. We investigated whether climatic variables explain the prevalence of colour polymorphism in a population of the grass snake (Natrix natrix) with two morphotypes, the mel

A Comparative Metagenomic Analysis of Specified Microorganisms in Groundwater for Non-Sterilized Pharmaceutical Products.

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, ensuring product safety involves the detection and identification of microorganisms with human pathogenic potential, including Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC), Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium sporogenes, Candida albicans, and Mycoplasma spp., some of which may be missed or not identified by traditional culture-dependent methods. In this study, we employed a metagenomic approach to detect these taxa, avoiding the limitations of conventional cultivation methods. We assessed the groundwater micro

First detection of enteric adenoviruses genotype 41 in recreation spring areas of Taiwan.

Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) are DNA viruses found in recreational water, such as water parks and swimming pools. Human adenovirus 41 (HAdV-41) is the most common serotype detected and is a leading cause of acute diarrheal disease. The focus of this study is to determine the prevalence of HAdVs in hot springs. Of 57 samples collected from four different geological sites, 16 samples have shown evidence of HAdVs (28.1%). HAdV-41 and porcine adenovirus 5 (PAdV-5) were the two types isolated, with a greater frequency of HAdV-41, which in other settings has been associated with acute diarrhea. The hi

Sulfur spring dermatitis.

44 cases of an unusual condition, designated hot spring dermatitis, have been studied. Patients usually presented during the winter months with a history of having taken green sulfur spring baths within the previous 2-20 days. Skin lesions developed about 24 h after bathing and were distributed generally over the trunk and limbs, especially in the skin folds. No micro-organisms were found in either hot spring water specimens or skin lesions. Patch tests showed no positive reactions. Investigations were undertaken to determine the physicochemical characteristics of the hot spring. In its extrem

The Elemental Composition of Fimbristylis ochotensis in Relation to Its Geothermal Habitat.

Fimbristylis ochotensis (Meinsh.) Kom. is a rare and vulnerable plant species of significant scientific and ecological importance. It is an obligate thermophyte that grows exclusively around hot springs and geothermal fields on the Kamchatka Peninsula and in northern Japan. For the first time, the elemental composition of Fimbristylis ochotensis and its associated soils was determined using neutron activation analysis, supplemented with ICP-OES and a direct mercury analyzer, on samples collected from three hot spring zones on the Kamchatka Peninsula. In total, 43 elements were quantified in so

Changes in heart rate variability in horses during immersion in warm springwater.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of immersion in warm springwater (38 degrees to 40 degrees C) on autonomic nervous activity in horses. ANIMALS: 10 male Thoroughbreds. PROCEDURE: Electrocardiograms were recorded from horses for 15 minutes during a warm springwater bath after being recorded for 15 minutes during stall rest. Variations in heart rate (HR) were evaluated from the power spectrum in terms of low frequency (LF, 0.01 to 0.07 Hz) power and high frequency (HF, 0.07 to 0.6 Hz) power as indices of autonomic nervous activity. RESULTS: Mean (+/- SE) HR during stall rest and immersion

[New medium for mycobacterial isolation and cultivation].

The study was undertaken to develop a new effective and cheap culture medium to be used in the bacteriology of tuberculosis. The medium prepared on the basis of geothermal nonphenol water was found to accelerate and increase detection rates, to increase the rate of accumulation of mycobacterial mass from the samples under study, to exclude mineral salts ("salty composition") from the composition of the medium, which simplifies the procedure of its preparation, reduces material and labor costs, to accelerate diagnosis and determine mycobacterial drug sensitivity, and to institute a correct trea

Hawaiian geothermal fumaroles contain diverse and novel viruses.

UNLABELLED: Viral community structure is known to influence the evolution of microbes in diverse and complex environments. While the diversity of microbes and their viruses have been metagenomically explored in terrestrial hot springs and hydrothermal vent systems, other volcanic features remain remarkably understudied. Fumaroles (steam vents) are geothermal features that heat groundwater with magma, releasing heated water vapor and volcanic gases, such as CO2 and H2S. Fumaroles are physicochemically dynamic compared to terrestrial hot springs-temperatures and gas emissions fluctuate rapidly w

Isolation and Identification of Bacteria from Three Geothermal Sites of the Atacama Desert and Their Plant-Beneficial Characteristics.

The Region of Arica and Parinacota (Atacama Desert) offers several unexplored remote sites with unique characteristics that would allow for the formulation of new bioproducts for agriculture. Among them, Jurasi Hot Springs, Polloquere Hot Springs, and Amuyo Lagoons represent a group of open pools fed by thermal water springing from the mountains. Their microbiomes remain unspecified, providing a unique opportunity to characterize the endemic community of these sites and develop new bioproducts for sustainable agriculture. Bacteria were isolated from the sediments of these geothermal sites and

Environmental Controls on Crenarchaeol Distributions in Hydrothermal Springs.

Thermophilic archaea synthesise cellular membranes composed primarily of isoprenoid glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraethers (iGDGTs). Cells can adjust the packing of their lipids by increasing cyclopentyl ring production, thereby decreasing membrane permeability and fluidity to maintain cellular function at high temperature, acidic pH, or nutrient limitation. Archaea of the class Nitrososphaeria synthesise crenarchaeol, an iGDGT with four cyclopentyl rings and a cyclohexyl ring, the function of which is unknown. Structural modelling suggests the cyclohexyl ring may increase membrane fluidit

Acquisition of elemental sulfur by sulfur-oxidising Sulfolobales.

Elemental sulfur (S8 0)-oxidising Sulfolobales (Archaea) dominate high-temperature acidic hot springs (>80°C, pH <4). However, genomic analyses of S8 0-oxidising members of the Sulfolobales reveal a patchy distribution of genes encoding sulfur oxygenase reductase (SOR), an S8 0 disproportionating enzyme attributed to S8 0 oxidation. Here, we report the S8 0-dependent growth of two Sulfolobales strains previously isolated from acidic hot springs in Yellowstone National Park, one of which associated with bulk S8 0 during growth and one that did not. The genomes of each strain encoded different s

Quality assessment of sulfurous thermal waters in the city of Poços de caldas, Minas gerais, Brazil.

Currently, the quality of the water consumed by the population, and also the water used for both leisure and therapeutic bathing, are known. In the city of Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, Brazil, the population has two sources of sulfurous thermal water, with free access for various purposes, including drinking. Since 1882, the system has retained the same structural characteristics, and at this time, there appears to be a risk of anthropogenic contamination due to population increase near the springs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the water quality of the sulfurous hot springs distribu

Legionella pneumonia associated with adult respiratory distress syndrome caused by Legionella pneumophila serogroup 3.

A 68-year-old man developed pneumonia 2 days after nearly drowning in a bathtub of a hot spring spa. Chest radiography revealed bilateral consolidation shadows associated with adult respiratory distress syndrome. Initial treatment with antibiotics and pulse therapy with methylprednisolone was not effective. The patient died on the 4th hospital day. A urinary antigen test for Legionella was positive. Legionella pneumophila serogroup 3 was recovered from an intratracheal specimen. The same serotype of Legionella was isolated from the hot spring water. Restriction enzyme analysis by pulse-field g

Detection of hydrogen sulfide through photoluminescence quenching of penicillamine-copper nanocluster aggregates.

We have developed a one-pot, inexpensive, simple and rapid method to synthesize photoluminescent copper nanocluster (Cu NC) aggregates from Cu(2+) ions in 65% (v v(-1)) dimethylformamide aqueous solution containing penicillamine (PA) as a capping and reducing agent. As-prepared PA-Cu NC aggregates emit at 580 nm when excited at 326 nm, with a quantum yield of 2.0%. The photoluminescence of PA-Cu NC aggregates originate from ligand-to-metal charge transfer, which is supported by a long lifetime (126.5 ns) and a large Stokes shift (254 nm). As-prepared PA-Cu NC aggregates have different emission

Severe hypercalcemia and polyuria in a near-drowning victim.

A 73-year-old man was admitted because of near-drowning in a hot springs bath. Transient severe hypercalcemia and polyuria were seen during the first hospital day. It seemed that the hypercalcemia was due to acute intoxication from calcium contained in the water of the spring absorbed mainly through the alveoli. To our knowledge, this is the first case of acute hypercalcemia complicating a near-drowning in a hot spring. Analysis of serum and urine electrolytes during the polyuric phase revealed saline diuresis, which was probably due to interference by the hypercalcemia of the reabsorption of

Medical effects of balneotherapy for managing diabetes and obesity: a review.

In light of the rapidly increasing number of people with diabetes worldwide and the resulting surge in medical costs, we have attempted to reassess the effectiveness of inexpensive and readily available balneotherapy on diabetes and obesity by summarizing recent related papers. For this analysis, 22 studies were selected through searches of multiple databases, including MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, Medical Central Journal Web, and Web of Science. The selected studies consisted of 12 full-body baths, six on foot baths, two on saunas, and two on drinking water therapies. Among participants receivin

Unexpected trends of amoebic encephalitis in Pakistan.

Annual reported cases of Naegleria fowleri (NF), popularly known as brain eating amoeba, are becoming a huge challenge for Pakistani health authorities. Karachi has seen cases regularly up till the present but Lahore has not. The spread of this amoeba in non-chlorinated water is a major concern for the authorities. NF is an amoeba commonly found in warm freshwater environments such as lakes, hot springs and poorly chlorinated swimming pools. It poses a significant risk during hot weather when water-related recreational activities are popular. Where there is a non-chlorinated water supply, its
