The virtual home visit.

Previous research has identified the 'unique experience' of home visits for medical students, yet in-training health professionals' exposure to them is limited and there is not a structured method of performing them. It is already recognised that simulation prior to clinical experience improves knowledge and confidence with the additional benefit that the experience can be standardised. We ran a 'Virtual Home Visit' for falls assessment for third year medical students as part of their teaching on multidisciplinary team (MDT) working. Students considered a clinical scenario involving a lady who

Enhancing neonatal wellness with home visitation.

We planned and implemented an evidence-based program to screen for jaundice and to try to increase the proportion of women breastfeeding for 6 months. The program involved home visitation by a registered nurse to provide education on and support of breastfeeding, and to perform physical assessment of both mothers and newborns, including screening for neonatal jaundice. Quantitative data showed increased breastfeeding rates at 6 months. In addition, readmission rates for jaundice were higher when compared to regional benchmarks. However, the average length of stay for treatment of jaundice was

Helping families thrive while developing a strong working alliance: The benefits of Recipe 4 Success.

This study explored whether the strength of parent-home visitor working alliances might alter the benefits of Recipe 4 Success, a highly structured food-based curriculum designed to promote parents' sensitive scaffolding, responsive food parenting practices, toddlers' self-regulation, and healthy eating habits. This study included 242 parents and their toddlers residing in the United States, most of whom were living in poverty (37% white, 25% Black, 19% Latiné, 17% Multiracial, and 2% Asian; median income = $1555 per month). Families were randomly assigned to Recipe 4 Success or usual practice

Home Visits as a Primary Health Care Strategy During COVID-19: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Primary health care played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic by adapting care delivery to maintain essential services and reduce transmission risks. Home visits were used to monitor individuals in isolation, support vulnerable populations at increased risk, and sustain community-based care. However, their organization and operationalization varied across settings, and the available evidence remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: This protocol outlines the methods for a scoping review that will systematically map how in-person or hybrid home visits linked to primary, community-b

Relationship of perinatal outcomes to the competence and quantity of contact with community health workers.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of perinatal home visits by community health workers (CHWs) often diminishes when large regional or national programmes are implemented. To address this gap, we aimed to identify which CHW behaviours influence maternal and child outcomes. METHODS: We randomised all government-funded CHWs at eight deeply rural clinics (n = 43) by clinic to usual care, which consisted of home visits (control group; four clinics, 23 CHWs, 392 mothers), or to home visiting, which included improved monitoring and supervision (intervention group; four clinics, 20 CHWs, 423 mothers). Child First home visiting impacts during the COVID-19 pandemic: Evidence from a randomized controlled trial.

Existing research has found that home visiting programs for families with young children can improve children's development and strengthen caregiver and family well-being. However, the pandemic created numerous challenges for home visiting programs, forcing them to deliver services online or in a hybrid format to respond to pandemic-related challenges. Questions remain about the impacts of these programs when delivered at-scale via a hybrid model, especially during this uniquely challenging time. The present study reports 12-month impacts from a randomized controlled trial of Child First-an ev

Intention to Engage in Maternal and Child Health Home Visiting.

Home visiting (HV) programs have the potential to improve maternal and child health. As federal and state initiatives expand the reach of these programs, understanding what factors enhance uptake and retention of the services becomes increasingly important. This qualitative study used a Reasoned Action Model (RAM) and a cultural lens to explore factors influencing the engagement of women with low-income in HV programs. We conducted 21 semi-structured interviews in both English and Spanish in a prenatal clinic in an urban public health department. The constructs most salient for participants we

Parenting support for families with young children - a public health, user-focused study undertaken in a semi-rural area of Scotland.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To work with parents and public health nurses (health visitors), to identify and design a range of public health interventions to provide support to parents of young children. BACKGROUND: In the UK, only vulnerable families are now eligible for pro-active health visiting interventions on an individual family basis beyond the early days. Public health approaches are recommended for the majority of families who are not eligible for one-to-one professional support. DESIGN: Focus groups were carried out with parents of young children, health visitors and other professionals

The 75-year-old persons' self-reported health conditions: a knowledge base in the field of preventive home visits.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To describe and analyse 75-year-old persons' health conditions and how they were associated with socio-demographic status and sense of coherence to produce a knowledge base for district nurse's preventive home visits. BACKGROUND: Action plans are needed to promote health and to prevent diseases amongst older people. One action plan is preventive home visits to 75-year-old persons by the district nurse. Though the district nurse has a broad knowledge in the field of preventive health work, preventive home visits to 75-year-old persons was a new responsibility. Although agi

Home visit patients and family with cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: The operating process for cleft care, requires continuity of care involving a multidisciplinary team. When the patient goes to hospital to receive surgery, parents and family feel nervous about their children and need to know how to take care of their children afterwards. Some patients will have operations into their teenage years. The scar on their face will give them low self esteem and feelings of isolation. Patients and family need information and encouragement. Home visit should be a good process to convey information and encourage patients and family. OBJECTIVE: Of this proj

Large concomitant outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis emergency visits in adults and food-borne events suspected to be linked to raw shellfish, France, December 2019 to January 2020.

On 27 December 2019, the French Public Health Agency identified a large increase in the number of acute gastroenteritis and vomiting visits, both in emergency departments and in emergency general practitioners' associations providing house-calls. In parallel, on 26 and 27 December, an unusual number of food-borne events suspected to be linked to the consumption of raw shellfish were reported through the mandatory reporting surveillance system. This paper describes these concomitant outbreaks and the investigations' results.

Sleep deprivation in junior doctors--house officers in Singapore.

House officers are known to endure marked levels of sleep deprivation in administration of their duties. We aim to establish sleep patterns of local house officers while on the job and the impact it might have on their mood and sleepiness state. We also studied their sleep during their final year of medical school and pre-university for identification of any prior sleep deprivation. Questionnaires were used to assess sleep and mood change. Sleepiness levels on the day after call were assessed using the Stamford Sleepiness Scale. Subjects were found to sleep a median of only 1.0 (+/- 2.0) h per

Scaling up home-visiting to promote early childhood development and prevent violence in Rwanda: a hybrid type-2 effectiveness-implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: Children in impoverished families-especially those affected by violence-face risks to healthy development. In the years of strong economic recovery since the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, the Rwandan Government has invested in early child development, social and child protection and violence prevention, but few strategies for scaling evidence-based interventions (EBIs) in these areas have been studied. METHODS: We present a Hybrid Type-2 Implementation-Effectiveness study of the PLAY Collaborative implementation strategy to engage government and other stakeholders in scaling Su
