Frigipoint: a new cryosurgical instrument.

Frigipoint, a new handheld dipstick cryoprobe, will be introduced. This apparatus has three components: (1) a thermal conductive housing chamber (reservoir) tapered to tips with diameters of 2-10 mm (applicator); (2) a cryogen absorbent member within the housing chamber; and (3) a low-thermal conductivity handle, which is threaded onto the housing chamber. Laboratory experiments employing a gelatin medium showed that the delivery of the cryogen is uniform over the area of application, producing a flat-bottom ice ball. In animal studies, liquid nitrogen spray produced greater depth of destructi

Effects of Cage Enrichment on Behavior, Welfare and Outcome Variability in Female Mice.

The manner in which laboratory rodents are housed is driven by economics (minimal use of space and resources), ergonomics (ease of handling and visibility of animals), hygiene, and standardization (reduction of variation). This has resulted in housing conditions that lack sensory and motor stimulation and restrict the expression of species-typical behavior. In mice, such housing conditions have been associated with indicators of impaired welfare, including abnormal repetitive behavior (stereotypies, compulsive behavior), enhanced anxiety and stress reactivity, and thermal stress. However, due

Social Housing Conditions Modulate the Long-Lasting Increase in Cocaine Reward Induced by Intermittent Social Defeat.

Social defeat is considered the most representative animal model for studying the consequences of social stress. Intermittent social defeat (ISD) has proved to enhance the response to cocaine hedonic properties. In the present research, we evaluated if different social housing conditions, as housing with a familiar conspecific or with a female, exert a protective effect modulating the negative consequences of ISD as the increased sensitivity to cocaine and the induction of anxiety-like behavior. To achieve this objective, non-stressed or ISD OF1 male mice were divided into five different exper

Increased depression-like behaviors with altered brain dopamine metabolisms in male mice housed in large cages are alleviated by bupropion.

Psycho-environmental stress-based animal models of anxiety and depression are useful for investigating pathological mechanisms and drug development. Although several rodent-based studies have reported the beneficial effects of environmental enrichment (EE) on brain plasticity and anxiety- and depression-like behaviors, other studies have reported inverse effects. Here, we found that housing male mice in EE involving large cages and other EE materials increased anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in open field and tail suspension tests (TST). We further confirmed that housing in large cages

Effects of group housing on stress induced emotional and neuroendocrine alterations.

Chronic restraint stress can induce depressive and anxiety-like behavior and neurophysiological disturbances. The social living shows the health-promoting and stress-protective effects on both human and animal. However, whether group housing exerts effects on development of depression and anxiety induced by chronic restraint treatments and its detailed neuroendocrine mechanism remain unclear. Following repeated restraint, the anxiety and depression-like behaviors of single and group housing mice were examined using the elevated plus-maze, open field test and forced swimming test. The levels of

The development of behaviour patterns and temperament in dairy heifers.

Observations were carried out on a group of twenty autumn born Friesian heifer calves from birth until calving at about 25 months of age. During rearing they experienced several rearing conditions; (I) Calf house, where from 48 hrs of age they were individually penned. (II) Group housed Indoors. At weaning they were housed in pens in groups of 10-20 animals and fed hay or silage ad libitum plus some concentrate food. (III) Grazing out doors (HGI) from spring to autumn in groups of 15-30 animals and moved to fresh pastures at about 2 week intervals. (IV) Housed indoors in large groups of 70-80

Evaluation of Horses' Daytime Activity Budget in a Model of Ethological Stable: A Case Study in Italy.

The increasing interest in animal welfare and the knowledge of equine physiological and ethological needs have led to the development of different types of horses' management and housing systems. The research presented here aimed to assess the daytime activity budget of horses. Focal animal sampling was used as an observational sampling method, and the five animals were observed for a total of 9920 minutes in the paddock and inside the stall. The results showed that horses spent most of the daytime in foraging behaviors, followed by resting behaviors, and locomotion. Social behaviors (s.e. all

Mothers produce less aggressive sons with altered immunity when there is a threat of disease during pregnancy.

Maternal experience before and during pregnancy is known to play a key role in offspring development. However, the influence of social cues about disease in the maternal environment has not been explored. We indirectly exposed pregnant mice to infected neighbours by housing them next to non-contagious conspecifics infected with Babesia microti. We examined the effect of this indirect immunological exposure on both the females and their adult offspring. Exposed females had higher levels of serum corticosterone and increased kidney growth compared with those with uninfected neighbours. These exp

Effect of early life housing manipulation on baseline and drug-induced behavioural responses on neurochemistry in the male rat.

Employing environmental enrichment (EE) provides continual sources of dynamic interaction for animals. Though an established discipline in behavioural science, the consequences of EE on behavioural pharmacological tests have not been extensively examined. The purpose of this study was to examine the consequences of EE (or isolation housing) on a range of behavioural pharmacological tests and brain monoamine and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in the rat. Male rats were randomly assigned to IC (isolation), SC (standard group-housed) or EE conditions. IC and SC animals were h

[Serological survey of human leptospirosis in a high risk population in Chile].

Two hundred and sixty five subjects with high risk works for leptospirosis were submitted to microscopic agglutination test for leptospira. 122 worked at animal farms, 71 in rice growing fields and 72 in slaughter houses. 30 control subjects were also tested. A total of 66 samples (22%) were positive, most of them with low titers. Percentage of positive reactions were higher for persons working in rice fields, followed by those working in slaughter houses and animal farms. The 21-40 year age group was most affected in all working sites. Serovars found most commonly were ichterohemorrhagic in r

Understanding animal-building-management interactions in response to heat: sensitivity analysis of a dynamic individual-based model of pig fattening.

Climate change and increasing thermal stress represent major challenges for intensive pig production systems, affecting animal performance, welfare, and farm profitability. In this context, integrative models such as ThermiPig are increasingly used to simulate the combined effects of climate, housing, and animal responses on swine production performance. However, the complexity of these models requires a better understanding of how input parameters influence simulation outputs. This study applied a two-step global sensitivity analysis to investigate the influence of nine biological, environmen

Early social isolation in male Long-Evans rats alters both appetitive and consummatory behaviors expressed during operant ethanol self-administration.

BACKGROUND: Postweaning social isolation in rats produces profound and long-lasting cognitive and behavioral deficits in adult animals. Importantly, this housing manipulation alters sensitivity to a number of drugs of abuse including ethanol. However, most studies with ethanol have utilized continuous or limited home-cage access to examine interactions between juvenile social experience and drinking. More recently, social isolation was shown to increased ethanol responding in a "dipper" model of self-administration (Deehan et al., 2007). In the current study, we utilize a "sipper" operant self

Evaluating pair versus solitary housing in kennelled domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) using behaviour and hair cortisol: a pilot study.

Numerous studies conducted to assess welfare of domestic dogs housed in kennel facilities have reported that these dogs experience suboptimal living conditions. One important goal of improving welfare of kennelled dogs is to reduce their stress levels, and one recommended approach for improving welfare of kennelled dogs is group or social housing. The beneficial effects of management changes designed to achieve this goal should be measurable in individual animals. Stress is evident through behaviours exhibited, as well as via the concentration of cortisol, a key hormone reflecting stress. Usin

Associations between decreased fertility and management factors, claw health, and somatic cell count in Swedish dairy cows.

The aim of this retrospective single-cohort study was to investigate if a rapid change in feeding, management, or housing or an increasing incidence of claw diseases or udder health problems is associated with decreased reproductive performance. Data on individual cows and herds were retrieved from the Swedish official milk recording system and questionnaire data on feeding system was obtained from the regional dairy associations. In total, 63,561 cows in 759 herds were included in the study. The associations between the probability of pregnancy at first insemination and number of insemination

Prevalence of Dirofilaria immitis, Ehrlichia canis, and Borrelia burgdorferi in pet dogs, racing greyhounds, and shelter dogs in Florida.

Arthropod vectors of canine infectious diseases are present throughout Florida. Since crowded housing has the potential to bring vectors and infected dogs into close proximity, it is possible that prevalence of infection is higher in intensely housed dogs. In this study, the seroprevalence of Dirofilaria immitis, Ehrlichia canis, and Borrelia burgdorferi in dogs residing in two types of intensive housing, greyhound kennels and animal shelters, was compared to dogs residing in low-intensity housing, private homes. Serum was collected from a cross-section of 1500 adult dogs from Florida, includi

Reproductive efficiency and longevity of gilts and sows in group housing and free-farrowing systems versus traditional crate systems in tropical environments.

BACKGROUND: Group housing systems during gestation and free-farrowing pens have recently been implemented in Thailand. This study aimed to investigate how different housing systems, sow parity number and season affect the following outcomes: the percentage of sows returning to oestrus after insemination, farrowing rate, litter traits, piglet preweaning mortality and the age at which sows are removed from the herd. The dataset included 61066 service records from 15666 Landrace × Yorkshire crossbred gilts and sows across three housing systems within a breeding herd. The service records were cate

Temperature but not leptin prevents semi-starvation induced hyperactivity in rats: implications for anorexia nervosa treatment.

The hypothesis linking hyperactivity with weight loss associated hypoleptinemia in anorexia nervosa gained momentum after a study showing that leptin suppressed semi-starvation induced hyperactivity in rats. Alternatively, ambient temperature is a key modulating factor of activity in semi-starved rats. The aim of the study is to compare the efficacy of leptin with increased ambient temperature in the prevention of hyperactivity in semi-starved rats. 74 Sprague-Dawley male rats were employed in two experiments with the difference residing in the length of baseline. After an extended (28 days),

Herd factors influencing oocyst production of Eimeria and Cryptosporidium in Estonian dairy cattle.

Cryptosporidium and Eimeria are intestinal parasites which are sensitive to the surroundings, behaviour and well-being of their host. In the present study, a range of factors related to farm management systems, environment, housing and herd characteristics were investigated with regard to alterations in oocyst excretion in cattle, using a mixed-effects model. Information and samples for three age categories were obtained from 45 Estonian dairy farms, located in 15 counties. Leaving the calf with the mother after birth reduced the risk of shedding higher levels of Cryptosporidium (OR = 0.20) an

Brain opioid receptor density relates to stereotypies in chronically stressed pigs.

Opioid receptor densities were measured in the hippocampus of chronically stressed (tethered) pigs to study the involvement of endogenous opioid systems in stereotypy performance. Three groups of animals were housed tethered for 2 (n=12), 5.5 (n=12) and 8-9 months (n=8), respectively, and the intensity of stereotypy performance was determined. Opioid receptor densities were measured post mortem using membrane binding assays with [(3)H]naloxone as a ligand. A negative correlation was found between the density of opioid receptors and the intensity of stereotypy performance in the animals that ha
