Housing characteristics of farmworker families in North Carolina.

Adequate housing is a basic human right and an important determinant of environmental health. Little research has documented the housing quality of immigrant Latino farmworker families. This analysis uses data from four surveys of North Carolina farmworker communities conducted in 2001 and 2003 to document aspects of housing quality that could affect farmworker family health. Three housing domains are considered: dwelling characteristics, household characteristics, and household behaviors. Most farmworker families live in mobile homes, and few own their dwellings. Many are located near agricul

Housing Disadvantage and Poor Mental Health: A Systematic Review.

CONTEXT: This study reviews collective evidence on the longitudinal impact of housing disadvantage (based on tenure, precarity, and physical characteristics) on mental health. It is focused on temporally ordered studies where exposures preceded outcomes, a key criterion to establishing causal evidence. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A systematic review of evidence on housing disadvantage and mental health was performed. The literature search used six electronic databases including MEDLINE (PubMed and Ovid platform), Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, SciELO, and Sociological Abstracts. Population-based

Effectiveness of interventions to improve the health and housing status of homeless people: a rapid systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Research on interventions to positively impact health and housing status of people who are homeless has received substantially increased attention over the past 5 years. This rapid review examines recent evidence regarding interventions that have been shown to improve the health of homeless people, with particular focus on the effect of these interventions on housing status. METHODS: A total of 1,546 articles were identified by a structured search of five electronic databases, a hand search of grey literature and relevant journals, and contact with experts. Two reviewers independe

Domains of housing insecurity: Associations with child maltreatment risk.

BACKGROUND: Housing insecurity increases risk for child maltreatment, although links from specific domains of housing hardship to specific maltreatment types are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: The present study tested relationships between three domains of housing - quality, stability, and affordability - with three types of child maltreatment - psychological abuse, physical abuse, and neglect - in a sample of mothers with children age 5-9. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data came from a large, longitudinal survey that recruited mothers in hospitals shortly after giving birth in 20 large America

Importance of Housing and Cardiovascular Health and Well-Being: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Cardiovascular disease disparities are shaped by differences in risk factors across racial and ethnic groups. Housing remains an important social determinant of health. The objective of this statement is to review and summarize research that has examined the associations of housing status with cardiovascular health and overall health. PubMed/Medline, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, US Census data, Cochrane Library reviews, and the annual Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics report from the American Heart Association were used to identify empirical research studies that examined

Extra care housing in the UK: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Extra care housing is a model of housing for older people where residents live in self-contained accommodation with flexible care and support available at all times. Ageing populations, seen globally and in the United Kingdom, mean increasing demand for this type of housing. While extra care housing may help people live longer independently, its provision poses challenges (e.g. resourcing flexible care). By identifying existing evidence, this scoping review will inform future research into extra care housing, to support the development of schemes that meet the needs of older people

The Status and Impact of Severe Housing Problems and Evictions in North Carolina.

Housing costs, eviction rates, homelessness, and the number of families living in substandard conditions are rising quickly. The poor quality of housing and high rates of evictions today will result in additional health issues and challenge systems to meet the "Healthy North Carolina 2030" housing goals.

Housing Status, Medical Care, and Health Outcomes Among People Living With HIV/AIDS: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests responses to HIV that combine individual-level interventions with those that address structural or contextual factors that influence risks and health outcomes of infection. Housing is such a factor. Housing occupies a strategic position as an intermediate structural factor, linking "upstream" economic, social, and cultural determinants to the more immediate physical and social environments in which everyday life is lived. The importance of housing status for HIV prevention and care has been recognized, but much of this attention has focused on homeles

Recovery housing for substance use disorder: a systematic review.

Recovery housing, an abstinence-based living environment, is the most widely available form of substance use disorder (SUD) recovery support infrastructure. This systematic review characterized the randomized control trials (RCT) and quasi-experimental designs (QED) research on recovery housing. We conducted a search across PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and CENTRAL published prior to February 2024. For inclusion, studies had to compare recovery housing alone to a non-recovery housing condition. Our search identified 5 eligible studies including 3 RCTs and 2 QEDs, across 11 reports. Particip

Reunifying families, cutting costs: housing-child welfare partnerships for permanent supportive housing.

In the absence of an adequate supply of affordable, quality housing, child welfare agencies are placed in the unenviable position of separating families to protect children from the debilitating effects of homelessness. This article presents recommendations for costeffective housing-child welfare partnerships that will shift the burden of providing adequate housing back to housing agencies. These partnerships have the potential to move child welfare agencies closer to achieving permanence and well-being for all children.

Improving the quality of discharge care for the homeless: a patient-centered approach.

Homeless patients are at risk for low-quality discharge care, yet there are limited patient-centered data to guide improvement. We explored relationships between assessment of housing status by hospital staff and quality of discharge care using quantitative and qualitative data from interviews and chart reviews with 98 homeless patients: 80% male, mean homelessness 2.8 years, mean age 44. Patient-reported performance of discharge care varied substantially across seven domains from 16-75% and chart review documented lower performance than patient report. Over half (56%) were not asked about the

Addressing housing insecurity as a social determinant of health: A systematic review of interventions in healthcare settings.

BACKGROUND: Stable housing is a key social determinant of health. Those experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity are known to have increased healthcare utilization and yet worse healthcare outcomes compared to securely housed individuals. Housing interventions offered via healthcare settings provide an opportunity to reach this population. We conducted a systematic review to 1) identify interventions which address housing insecurity and engage healthcare settings; 2) determine effectiveness of these interventions; and 3) ascertain common characteristics of effective interventions to inf

The Family Unification Program: A Randomized-Controlled Trial of Housing Stability.

The study tests the short-term impact on housing stability of the Family Unification Program (FUP), a permanent housing program for child welfare- involved families at risk of separation from children due to inadequate housing. Families eligible for FUP (n = 150) received housing case management services as usual, and half were referred for permanent housing vouchers made available through FUP. Families referred for FUP secured more enriched home learning environments, while more precariously housed families exhibited greater housing, stability when referred for FUP. The intervention did not r

Improvements in habitability and housing satisfaction after dwelling regeneration in social housing complexes. The RUCAS study.

Housing is a pressing problem worldwide and a key determinant of health and wellbeing. The right to adequate housing, as a pillar of the right to an adequate standard of living, means more than a roof to live under. Adequate means the dwelling must fulfill material functions and psychosocial functions, thus contributing to dwellers health and wellbeing. Social housing policies aim to fulfill the right to housing, but frequently fail in fulfilling the right to it being adequate. This study capitalizes on the implementation of a national urban regeneration program in two social housing villas in

"It's Stable but Not Stable": A Conceptual Framework of Subjective Housing Stability Definition Among Individuals with Co-occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders.

Objective: Despite increasing efforts to improve housing stability, research has largely defined housing stability in a narrow sense and heavily relied on objective measures, such as housing types and housing duration. The present study constructed a conceptual framework for a subjective housing stability definition from the perspectives of individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders and their behavioral health service providers. Methods: Following the principles of grounded theory, we collected and analyzed qualitative data through semistructured interviews with 24

A Systematic Review of the Transition from Homelessness to Finding a Home.

Homelessness is associated with premature mortality, increased morbidity, and poor quality of life. Transitioning from homelessness to housing is a complex process, particularly for individuals with mental illness. This article presents a systematic review of 26 empirical studies exploring the transition of adults from homelessness to finding a home. Seven qualitative, 14 quantitative, and 5 mixed-method studies were critically appraised and synthesized yielding persistent qualitative themes such as maintaining stability, making adjustments, and a place called home, and quantitative key catego

Measuring Housing Stability With Consumer Reference Data.

Housing instability for low-income renters has drawn greater attention recently, but measurement has limited research on policies to stabilize housing. Address histories from consumer reference data can be used to increase the quantity and quality of research on low-income renters. Consumer data track housing moves throughout the entire United States for most of the adult population. In this article, I show that such data can measure housing stability for groups with very low income and extreme instability. For example, the data can track housing moves during natural disasters, at demolition o

Experiences of housing interventions among survivors of intimate partner violence: a qualitative systematic review and meta-synthesis.

Experiences of homelessness and intimate partner violence (IPV) frequently intersect for women, yet evidence-based interventions that address both issues simultaneously remain limited. This study (a) systematically reviewed and meta-synthesized qualitative research exploring women's experiences with housing interventions for survivors of IPV and (b) integrated findings with a recent systematic review of quantitative evaluations. We conducted a comprehensive search of 15 electronic databases, grey literature, and reference lists up to May 31, 2024. Eligible studies included English-language qua

Perceptions About Housing and Neighborhood Characteristics Among Aging Adult Black Americans in Two Predominantly Black, Low-Income Neighborhoods in Pittsburgh: A Multi-Method Analysis.

The life expectancy gap between Black and White Americans has narrowed, but progress remains slow due to the persistent consequences of lifetime exposure to structural and interpersonal experiences of racism and discrimination in various settings, for example, disadvantaged housing, neighborhood, and economic conditions. It is important to understand challenges and facilitators to healthy aging among Black Americans, i.e., maintaining functional ability and well-being in older age. We explore the intersection of housing, neighborhoods, and healthy aging among Black adults who live in two predo
