Cerebral cortical contributions to sensory evoked potentials: hydranencephaly.

The contribution of the cerebral cortex to the generation of sensory evoked potentials was studied in an infant with hydranencephaly. On CT scan no tissue above the thalamus was noted. Long-latency potentials to auditory stimuli were absent whereas the short-latency or brain-stem auditory evoked potentials and some of the components of the middle latency auditory evoked potentials (No and Po) were present. To visual stimulation only the electroretinogram was detected. To somatosensory stimulation only the spinal cord potentials could be detected. The absence of long-latency components in each

Hydranencephaly associated with interruption of bilateral internal carotid arteries.

Hydranencephaly is a rare and fatal central nervous system disorder where all or nearly all of the bilateral cerebral hemispheres are absent. The extensive hollow cerebrum is replaced with cerebrospinal fluid. Clinically, the differential diagnoses of hydranencephaly include severe hydrocephalus and alobar holoprosencephaly. Nearly all cases are sporadic, involving approximately 1 in 5000 continuing pregnancies. The exact main cause is still unknown, but hydranencephaly is usually found to develop secondarily to the occlusion of cerebral arteries above the supraclinoid level. We present the ca

[Congenital toxoplasmosis with hydranencephaly. A case report (author's transl)].

Hydranencephaly is an uncommon finding in congenital toxoplasmosis. The authors report a new case and emphasize the toxoplasmic etiology of this malformation, the possibility of normal neurologic examination at birth, and the usefulness of cranial transillumination whenever congenital toxoplasmosis is suspected in a neonate.

[Hydranencephaly. Major cerebral lesions with normal neonatal neurologic behavior].

Case report of an 8 days old girl who had a discrete increase in head circumference associated with moderate EEG abnormalities. Familial and obstetrical histories were negative. Skull transillumination, contrast ventriculography and carotid arteriography led to the diagnosis of hydranencephaly. The cerebral lobes whose blood supply is dependent from the internal carotids were missing and were replaced by cavities. The normal neonatal neurological behaviour which did not change till death at 3 months, is a stiking phenomenon.

Computed tomography (CT) scan findings in calves with hydranencephaly.

BACKGROUND: Hydranencephaly is the unilateral or bilateral loss of cerebral hemispheres and their replacement by a cerebrospinal fluid-filled sac that is caused by some teratogenic viruses. This disorder can be recognized before death occurs, using computed tomography (CT) scan. Pathological findings are also useful for the confirmation of the diagnosis. AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine features of hydranencephaly in calves by CT. METHODS: In this study, CT images were obtained from the skulls of 7 same-age calves with neurological signs, affected by Akabane virus, after slaughte

Bluetongue virus serotype 8-associated congenital hydranencephaly in calves.

Hydranencephaly, the almost complete absence of the cerebral parenchyma, induced by infection with modified live bluetongue virus (BTV) crossing the placenta has previously been reported in sheep and rarely in cattle in the USA and in South Africa. The current study describes 29 cases of hydranencephaly in bovine foetuses and 'dummy' calves up to 3 months of age in Belgium associated with natural BTV serotype 8 infection very early in gestation. Histological examination of the remaining cerebral parenchyma showed moderate to severe atrophy of the neural tissue. The lesions observed support the

Choroid plexectomy reduces neurosurgical intervention in patients with hydranencephaly.

INTRODUCTION: The removal of the choroid plexus from the lateral ventricles was attempted by Dandy in the early 20th century but later discarded as complications arose and other methods of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion were introduced. We compare our experience with a variation of this operation to CSF diversion in patients with hydranencephaly or near hydranencephaly. METHODS: The hospital and office charts of patients with a diagnosis of hydranencephaly were reviewed from the two institutions spanning the career of the senior author. Thirteen patients were identified, of whom 9 underw

Hydranencephaly treatments: retrospective case series and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to review treatment options for infants with hydranencephaly and to consider the pros and cons of each treatment modality. METHODS: This paper is a review of hydranencephaly as well as a retrospective analysis evaluating the outcomes of 52 infants with hydranencephaly who were treated at the Kijabe Hospital, Kijabe, Kenya, in one of four ways: ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) insertion, endoscopic choroid plexus coagulation (CPC), open choroid plexectomy (CPlx), and palliative care. The primary outcome measure was control of head size, with the aim o

A Case of Hydranencephaly in Which Ophthalmic Examinations Were Performed.

PURPOSE: We performed ophthalmic examinations, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), on a case diagnosed with hydranencephaly. CASE REPORT: This case involved a female infant born at the gestational age of 35 weeks and 4 days, with the birth weight of 2,152 g, who was one of monochorionic diamniotic twins, and the identical twin died in utero at the gestational age of 24 weeks. After that, examination by fetal echo indicated that she had microcephaly and ventriculomegaly. Postnatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of her head indicated microcephaly and significant enlargement of the l

Neuroepidemiology of Porencephaly, Schizencephaly, and Hydranencephaly in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.

BACKGROUND: No population-based surveys of porencephaly, schizencephaly, and hydranencephaly have been conducted in Japan or other Asian countries. We performed a neuroepidemiologic analysis to elucidate the incidence of porencephaly, schizencephaly, and hydranencephaly in Miyagi prefecture, Japan, during 2007-2011. METHODS: We sent inquiry forms in February 2012 to three neonatal intensive care units, 25 divisions of orthopedic surgery in municipal hospitals, 33 divisions of pediatrics including one university hospital, municipal hospitals, pediatric practitioners, and institutions for physi

Choroid plexus coagulation in infants with extreme hydrocephalus or hydranencephaly.

UNLABELLED: OBJECT.: Severe hydrocephalus and hydranencephaly are common congenital conditions in Kenya. In patients with these conditions, ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts are associated with appreciable complications and endoscopic third ventriculostomies (ETVs) have limited success. Endoscopic choroid plexus coagulation (CPC) to diminish CSF production is a potential treatment option. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of CPC without ETV in infants with severe hydrocephalus or hydranencephaly. METHODS: Medical records of infants with severe congenital hydrocephalus or hyd

Hydranencephaly in a newborn with a FLVCR2 mutation and prenatal exposure to cocaine.

BACKGROUND: Hydranencephaly is a relatively rare but severe structural brain abnormality that often results in perinatal death. Although several factors including infection and multiple births have been reported to be associated with this birth defect, the underlying etiology is not well understood. Recently, FLVCR2 gene mutations have been implicated in a subset of hydranencephaly cases, following an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. CASE: We report a male infant with hydranencephaly found to have a previously unreported six amino acid deletion in one copy of the FLVCR2 gene follow

Hydranencephaly associated with cerebellar involvement and bilateral microphthalmia and colobomas.

Hydranencephaly is an encephaloclastic central nervous system disorder characterised by severe destruction of the cerebral hemispheres with preservation of posterior fossa structures. We present MRI and neurosonography features of a unique case of hydranencephaly involving cerebellum (in the form of complete liquefaction of cerebellar hemispheres) and cerebral hemispheres with associated bilateral microphthalmia and ocular colobomas. This is an exceptional case as to the best to our knowledge. In humans, such a severe involvement of cerebellum has not been reported in cases of hydranencephaly.

Primary congenital rhabdoid tumor of the brain with neoplastic hydranencephaly.

A child with shunted hydranencephaly and presumed ventriculitis was found to have a primary congenital rhabdoid tumor (RT) of the brain. The child died and a complete autopsy was carried out. The cerebral hemispheres were replaced by a single thin-walled cavity studed with tumor nodules and filled with thick, viscous fluid. The posterior fossa and visceral organs were free of tumor. This case is unique because the rhabdoid tumor was primary to the brain, it was congenital, and it massively replaced the cerebral hemispheres, causing hydranencephaly. Only three other cases of primary RT of the b

[Endocrinological analysis of chronic hypernatremia in two cases of hydranencephaly].

We reported two infants with hydranencephaly and chronic hypernatremia. Their plasma sodium concentration gradually increased during the first week and remained between 150-160 mEq/L thereafter. They showed no signs of thirst. A water deprivation test demonstrated low urine osmolality and low plasma ADH concentration despite markedly elevated plasma osmolality in both cases. Urine was significantly concentrated when vasopressin was given. Thus, it was concluded that both thirst mechanism and ADH secretion were disturbed in these two cases. ADH producing cells, the thirst center and the osmorec
