Lacquer thinner, commonly used for removing household paints is known to contain mixture of various arometic hydrocarbons; halogenated hydrocarbons and naptha, if ingested may rarely cause methemoglobinemia. We report a 3 year old child who presented to us with history of accidental ingestion of thinner, used for removing household paint. Child was having cyanosis with minimal tachypnoea & the colour of his blood was chocolate brown. Later methemoglibulin level estimations were also done, which were suggestive of this diagnosis. Ten typical industries in Luohe City were selected for the sampling of organized emissions of volatile organic compounds （VOCs）, and 114 VOCs components of each sample were detected to analyze their source characteristics and effects. The rapid development of large-scale livestock husbandry has caused serious air pollution problems (e.g., The Tuzuoqi demonstration farm belonging to the Yili Group. The farm is located in the suburb of Hohhot City in northern China). The potential for natural attenuation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in landfill covers was investigated in soil microcosms incubated with methane and air, simulating the gas composition in landfill soil covers. Soil was sampled at Skellingsted Landfill at a location emitting methane. This article presents the current knowledge and clinical applications of the use of biomarkers of exposure to the halogenated solvents 1,1,1 trichloroethane (methylchloroform), trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene), and 1,1 dichloroethylene (vinylidene chloride). Although some studies have shown that protein and DNA adducts may form with chlorinated hydrocarbons, their application has not been validated sufficiently to justify their use as biologic markers of exposure.

Effects of two halogenated acetamides (chloroacetamide-iodoacetamide) and of three chlorinated volatile solvents on the ethane-pentane test, as an index of in vivo lipid peroxidation have been studied. Chloroacetamide stimulates alcanes production. Iodoacetamide acts only on pentane exhalation. The three chlorinated solvents seem to induce moderate lipoperoxidation, and the apparent increase of hydrocarbons might also result from decreased metabolism.

The previously published literature contains at least 27 deaths associated with the intentional concentration and inhalation of typewriter correction fluid (TCF). The solvent systems of TCF products include volatile halogenated hydrocarbons such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane and trichloroethylene.
