Hydrologic flushing rates drive nitrogen cycling and plant invasion in a freshwater coastal wetland model.

Coastal wetlands intercept significant amounts of nitrogen (N) from watersheds, especially when surrounding land cover is dominated by agriculture and urban development. Through plant uptake, soil immobilization, and denitrification, wetlands can remove excess N from flow-through water sources and mitigate eutrophication of connected aquatic ecosystems. Excess N can also change plant community composition in wetlands, including communities threatened by invasive species. Understanding how variable hydrology and N loading impact wetland N removal and community composition can help attain desire

Development of a Hydrologic and Water Allocation Model to Assess Water Availability in the Sabor River Basin (Portugal).

The Sabor River basin is a large basin (3170 km2) located in the northeast of Portugal and used mostly for agroforestry. One problem this basin faces is a lack of water during the dry season, when there is a higher demand for water to irrigate crops. To solve this problem, the Portuguese government created a National Irrigation Program to finance new irrigation areas and improve existing ones. Consequently, it is necessary to evaluate the past and future water availability for agricultural and domestic consumption in the basin. This was done through the development of a hydrological and water

Spatial and hydrologic variation of Bacteroidales, adenovirus and enterovirus in a semi-arid, wastewater effluent-impacted watershed.

Bacteroidales and viruses were contemporaneously measured during dry and wet weather conditions at a watershed-scale in a semi-arid watershed impacted by a mixture of agricultural runoff, municipal wastewater effluent and municipal runoff. The results highlight the presence of municipal wastewater effluent as a confounding factor for microbial source tracking (MST) studies, and thus data were segregated into groups based on whether they were impacted by wastewater effluent. In semi-arid environments such as the Calleguas Creek watershed, located in southern California, the relative contributio

Combining hydrology and mosquito population models to identify the drivers of Rift Valley fever emergence in semi-arid regions of West Africa.

BACKGROUND: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a vector-borne viral zoonosis of increasing global importance. RVF virus (RVFV) is transmitted either through exposure to infected animals or through bites from different species of infected mosquitoes, mainly of Aedes and Culex genera. These mosquitoes are very sensitive to environmental conditions, which may determine their presence, biology, and abundance. In East Africa, RVF outbreaks are known to be closely associated with heavy rainfall events, unlike in the semi-arid regions of West Africa where the drivers of RVF emergence remain poorly understood

Effects of 66 years of water management and hydroclimatic change on the urban hydrology and water quality of the Panke catchment, Berlin, Germany.

Long-term records of combined stream flow and water chemistry can be an invaluable source of information on changes in the quantity and quality of water resources. To understand the effect of hydroclimate and water management on the heavily urbanized Panke catchment in Berlin, Germany, an extensive search, collation and digitization of historic data from various sources was undertaken. This integrated a unique 66-year spatially distributed record of stream water quality, a 21-year record of groundwater quality and a 31-year stream flow record. These data were analysed in the context of hydrocl

In the shadow of the dam - Hydrology of the Little Conemaugh river and its South Fork, with insights about past and future flooding.

The Little Conemaugh River watershed and its South Fork sub-basin figure prominently in historical flooding of Johnstown, Pennsylvania and nearby communities with catastrophic flooding in 1889, 1936, and 1977 (reviewed herein). Historical stream gage data and data from a new gage on the South Fork (established via a novel, portable cableway system) are used with Nexrad rainfall data to assess watershed response and provide novel analysis of flood hydrology in the Little Conemaugh basin and the sub-basin. Using unit hydrograph estimates for longer duration storms (>8 h) and different baseflow c

Microbial community structure and antibiotic resistance genes in Dinaric karst groundwater under contrasting hydrological conditions.

Karst aquifers are vulnerable drinking water resources, yet microbiome-resistome studies remain scarce. We investigated microbial community composition and antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) profiles in five karst groundwater sources along an anthropogenic gradient in coastal Croatia under contrasting hydrological conditions. 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing showed that hydrological conditions were associated with community composition. Distance-based redundancy analysis identified total organic carbon as the variable associated with community structure, while ammonium and Escherichia coli were asso

Hydrological Regime Shifts Reshape Assembly Dynamics of Multi-Trophic Microbial Communities in Pumping Station Forebays.

Multi-trophic microbial community assembly and interactions in the forebays of pumping stations have remained poorly understood. In this study, 16S and 18S rRNA sequencing was carried out to reveal the diversity, network structure, assembly processes and environmental drivers of multi-trophic microbial communities across normal and wet seasons in the pumping stations of the Qinhuai River Basin. The results showed that microbial diversity and community composition differed significantly between the two hydrological periods across all four trophic groups. Co-occurrence network analysis indicated

Hydrological connectivity shape the nitrogen pollution sources and microbial community structure in a river-lake connected system.

Intensified agricultural and urban activities have exacerbated nitrogen pollution, posing a severe threat to freshwater ecosystems, particularly under intensified agricultural and urbanization activities. This study systematically examined Baiyangdian Lake (BYD) and its principal inflowing rivers, namely Fu River (FH), Baigouyin River (BGY), and Xiaoyi River (XY) to characterize the spatio-temporal distribution, primary nitrogen sources, and the impact on sediment microbial community structure. Results indicated pronounced seasonal variations in both nitrogen pollution loads and sources, with

High sensitivity of dissolved organic carbon transport during hydrological events in a small subtropical karst catchment.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and discharge are often tightly coupled, though these relationships in karst environments remain poorly constrained. In this study, DOC dynamics over 13 hydrological events, alongside monthly monitoring over an entire hydrological year were monitored in a small karst catchment, SW China. The concurrent analyses of power-law model and hysteresis patterns reveal that DOC behavior is generally transport-limited due to flushing effects of increased discharge but highly variable at both intra- and inter-event scales. The initial discharge at event onset and discharge-

Impact of extreme events on the transformation of hydrological characteristics of Asia's largest brackish water system, Chilika Lake.

The earth is experiencing the impact of climate change due to global warming. Lake ecosystems are no exception and are expected to cope with the consequences of extreme climatic events (hereafter ECE), such as storms, floods, and droughts. These events have significant potential to alter the hydrological characteristics (HC) influencing the physical, chemical, and biological behavior of lake ecosystems. Considering such ecosystem's high-value services and benefits, it is the need of the hour to monitor and evaluate the impact of ECE on lake ecosystems. The second-largest brackish water system

Space and time predictions of schistosomiasis snail host population dynamics across hydrologic regimes in Burkina Faso.

The ecology of the aquatic snails that serve as obligatory intermediate hosts of human schistosomiasis is driven by climatic and hydrological factors which result in specific spatial patterns of occurrence and abundance. These patterns in turn affect, jointly with other determinants, the geography of the disease and the timing of transmission windows, with direct implications for the success of control and elimination programmes in the endemic countries. We address the spatial distribution of the intermediate hosts and their seasonal population dynamics within a predictive ecohydrological fram

The role of seasonal and hydrological conditions in regulating dissolved inorganic nitrogen budgets in a forested catchment in SW Slovenia.

During two consecutive years the monitoring of rainfall nitrate (NO3-) and ammonium (NH4+) concentrations, combined with high-frequency measurements of streamwater NO3- concentrations, provided insight into the mechanisms controlling the dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) budgets of the forested Padež stream catchment in SW Slovenia. During both years, the catchment's annual wet atmospheric DIN deposition (12.6 and 13.8kg-N/ha) exceeded the annual DIN export (10.7kg-N/ha and 8.8kg-N/ha). The analysis of the monthly DIN budgets discloses seasonal patterns. In winter and early spring, the catchm

Identification of Groundwater Nitrate Contamination from Explosives Used in Road Construction: Isotopic, Chemical, and Hydrologic Evidence.

Explosives used in construction have been implicated as sources of NO3(-) contamination in groundwater, but direct forensic evidence is limited. Identification of blasting-related NO3(-) can be complicated by other NO3(-) sources, including agriculture and wastewater disposal, and by hydrogeologic factors affecting NO3(-) transport and stability. Here we describe a study that used hydrogeology, chemistry, stable isotopes, and mass balance calculations to evaluate groundwater NO3(-) sources and transport in areas surrounding a highway construction site with documented blasting in New Hampshire.

Contrasting signatures of vegetation-mediated environmental filtering under different hydrological contexts in a tailwater and a natural wetland.

Aquatic bacterial communities underpin wetland water purification, yet it remains unclear how vegetation-mediated environmental filtering is expressed under contrasting tailwater-fed and natural wetland contexts. To address this gap, we integrated 16S rRNA gene sequencing and multivariate statistical analyses to systematically investigate a tailwater wetland (QL) and a natural wetland (YA). In YA, bacterial community differentiation was more pronounced among vegetated zones. Conversely, in QL, continuous tailwater inputs and more active water movement were associated with a less persistent exp

Steering towards the most adequate performance indicator for an economic and hydrological evaluation of low-impact development practices.

Low-impact development practices, including rain gardens and bioretention systems, can help mitigate combined sewer overflows (CSO) in urban areas. However, selecting the most appropriate economic indicator for evaluating their cost-effectiveness remains a key challenge for decision-makers. A methodology was developed in this study to guide the selection of the most suitable low-impact development implementation scenario for reducing CSOs. Various performance indicators were compared, including net present value, benefit-cost ratio, cost-effectiveness, and benefit per runoff reduction, to iden

Evaluating the combined effects of climate and land use change on hydrological response in a mixed land use watershed.

Communities increasingly face challenges from changing hydrological patterns caused by the combined effects of climate change and land use/land cover (LULC) change. However, the hydrological response of mixed land use watersheds to these combined effects remains poorly understood. To address this gap, we developed an automated platform to retrieve projected climate and LULC data and input them into the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool Plus (SWAT+). These models were coupled to assess the impacts of climate and LULC change on the Stroubles Creek watersh
