Cellular in vitro assays in the diagnosis of Hymenoptera venom allergy.

BACKGROUND: The current diagnostic procedures of anaphylactic reactions to hymenoptera stings include intradermal tests, venom-specific IgE (sIgE) and possibly sting challenge tests. Sometimes, the culprit insect remains unidentified. The usefulness of the cellular assays CAST-ELISA and Flow-CAST in the management of hymenoptera venom allergy was investigated. METHODS: 134 patients with systemic reactions after a yellow jacket wasp and/or honey bee sting and 44 healthy controls underwent skin tests, as well as determination of sIgE (CAP-FEIA), leukocyte sulfidoleukotriene release (CAST-ELISA)

New developments in the diagnosis and treatment of hymenoptera venom allergy.

According to most textbooks, diagnostic tests with Hymenoptera venoms are reliable, and immunotherapy with these venoms in Hymenoptera-venom-allergic patients leads in near to 100% to full protection. Careful analysis of the literature shows however that the specificity of diagnostic tests is far from perfect and that both efficacy and tolerance, especially in patients receiving honeybee venom immunotherapy, are still suboptimal. The major allergens of honeybee and vespid venoms are now available in recombinant form. Preliminary trials analyzing diagnostic tests with recombinant allergens in h

[The basophil degranulation test in the diagnosis of Hymenoptera sting allergy].

In 98 patients with a suspected immediate type allergy to hymenoptera stings, skin tests (ST) with venom extracts, RAST determinations of venom specific serum IgE antibodies and basophil degranulation tests (BDT) with unwashed leukocytes were performed. BDT is a technically simple in-vitro method for detecting cell fixed IgE without risk for the patient. The specificity of BDT was investigated in a group of 10 controls not allergic to insect stings, of whom 7 were atopics. A good correlation could be demonstrated between BDT and the histamine release test (HRT), which was performed in the Inst

Anaphylaxis due to Hymenoptera sting progressing to thoracic aortic dissection.

Here we present an 83-year-old woman with truncal pain, hypoxemia, and nausea after a Hymenoptera sting. Due to progressive truncal pain, emergent computed tomography angiography was ordered and confirmed an acute Stanford type A aortic dissection extending from the aortic root and terminating in the left common iliac artery. She was emergently transferred to a quaternary care center and managed surgically. This case highlights anaphylaxis as a unique potential trigger of aortic dissection and the need for a high index of suspicion for early diagnosis.

Natural history and long-term follow-up of Hymenoptera allergy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Information on the natural history of hypersensitivity reactions is helpful for deciding which patient urgently needs a venom immunotherapy (VIT). RECENT FINDINGS: The frequency of self-reported systemic allergic reactions (SAR) to Hymenoptera stings is approximately 3-7% in the Northern Hemisphere. About 25% of SAR are severe (anaphylactic shock). Fatal sting reactions are very rare. The most important risk factor for severe insect sting anaphylaxis is mast cell disease. Other risk factors are higher age, vespid venom allergy (in contrast to honeybee venom allergy), repeat

Simplification of intradermal skin testing in Hymenoptera venom allergic children.

BACKGROUND: The direct comparison between children and adults with Hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis (HVA) has never been extensively reported. Severe HVA with IgE-documented mechanism is the recommendation for venom immunotherapy, regardless of age. OBJECTIVE: To determine the differences in the basic diagnostic profile between children and adults with severe HVA and its practical implications. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 91 children and 121 adults. RESULTS: Bee venom allergy was exposure dependent, regardless of age (P < .001). Atopy was more common in children (P = .01), wher

[Portable emergency kits prescribed for patients allergic to hymenoptera venoms].

Allergy to hymenoptera venoms may produce anaphylactic reactions that are severe in 0.8 - 5% of the adult population, according to different epidemiological studies. The risk of a severe reaction in allergic patients who have not been desensitized is 50%. This risk falls to 5 - 10% for allergy to wasp and to 10 - 20% for allergy to bee (1, 2, 3, 4). Because of this serious and vital risk, there is a consensus to prescribe an emergency kit that contains auto-injectable adrenaline (5). An enquiry was made of the allergists of ANAFORCAL and their patients to find the actual practice in comparison

Anaphylaxis after Hymenoptera stings in three patients with urticaria pigmentosa.

Three patients with urticaria pigmentosa are reported who developed symptoms of anaphylaxis after Hymenoptera stings. Serum IgE antibodies to various Hymenoptera venoms could not be detected in any of the patients. Skin tests were completely negative in one patient, and borderline reactions with honeybee and yellow jacket venom, respectively, were found in the other two. Peripheral blood leukocytes of these latter two patients did not release significant amounts of histamine after exposure to the respective venoms. In patients with mastocytosis, anaphylaxis after insect stings may not be IgE-m

Lipid-Lowering Medications Increase the Severity of Hymenoptera Venom Anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Platelet-activating factor (PAF), a key mediator of anaphylaxis, is inactivated by PAF-acetylhydrolase (PAF-AH). PAF-AH circulates complexed to low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Lipid-lowering medications interfere with PAF inactivation by lowering the concentration of LDL-PAF-AH complex, but their effect on anaphylaxis severity is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether lipid-lowering medication use alters anaphylaxis severity. We hypothesized that lipid-lowering medication use would increase the risk of severe anaphylaxis. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients from Cana

Parasitism of Two Spodoptera spp. by Microplitis prodeniae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

Early instar larvae of the tobacco cutworm Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and the beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are recognized hosts of the parasitic wasp Microplitis prodeniae Rao and Kurian (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), although M. prodeniae has previously been regarded as monophagous. In this study, we found the immature period and longevity of M. prodeniae developing in S. exigua was similar to that in S. litura. It was shown that the development time of M. prodeniae in S. exigua was 15.1 ± 0.3 d, not significantly different from 15.0 ± 0.2 d in S. litur

Reproductive Biology of Leptocybe invasa Fisher & La Salle (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae).

Leptocybe invasa Fisher & La Salle (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is an invasive pest in Eucalyptus plantations around the world. The successful colonization of L. invasa is possibly related to its reproductive biology. The objective of this study was to examine the reproductive biology of L. invasa. In Guangxi Province, the sex ratio (proportion of female, 0.99) of L. invasa was female-dominant throughout the year based on natural and artificial infestation. This result was similar to the ratios observed for other geographic populations in China, including those in Fujian (0.99), Guangdong (0.98),

Bait distribution among multiple colonies of Pharaoh ants (hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Pharaoh ant, Monomorium pharaonis (L.), infestations often consist of several colonies located at different nest sites. To achieve control, it is desirable to suppress or eliminate the populations of a majority of these colonies. We compared the trophallactic distribution and efficacy of two ant baits, with different modes of action, among groups of four colonies of Pharaoh ants. Baits contained either the metabolic-inhibiting active ingredient hydramethylnon or the insect growth regulator (IGR) pyriproxyfen. Within 3 wk, the hydramethylnon bait reduced worker and brood populations by at least

First record of Aximopsis s.l. (Hymenoptera, Eurytomidae) from China, with description of a new species parasitising the larvae of the coastal pollinator Ceratina smaragdula (Hymenoptera, Apidae).

BACKGROUND: The genus Aximopsis sensu lato (Hymenoptera, Eurytomidae) is a cosmopolitan group of parasitoid wasps, currently comprising 43 described species. The genus is defined by a suite of homoplastic morphological characters and its taxonomic boundaries remain unstable, with recent molecular phylogenies indicating paraphyly. The nodularis species group, which accounts for approximately half of the known species, includes parasitoids of various endophytic insects. While host associations with small carpenter bees of the genus Ceratina (Apidae) have been documented for a few eurytomid speci

Parasitism of the wheat stem sawfly (Hymenoptera: Cephidae) by Bracon cephi and B. lissogaster (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in wheat fields bordering tilled and untilled fallow in Montana.

We evaluated wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton, parasitism, infestation, and sawfly-cut stems in wheat fields bordering intensely tilled (no visible stubble residue), minimally tilled (>75% stubble residue visible), and untilled (chemical fallow, herbicide fallow management) summer fallow fields in north-central and south-central Montana. No difference in sawfly parasitism or sawfly-cut stems was found between fields bordering minimally tilled and fields bordering untilled summer fallow. Sawfly parasitism in fields bordering untilled summer fallow was greater than in fields bordering in

Phylogeography and taxonomic status of the Formica picea complex (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

The black bog ant Formica picea complex is widespread from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts of Eurasia. This complex was earlier believed to consist of one or two species (F. picea and F. candida). However, molecular analysis suggested that it includes three cryptic species. One is F. picea from Europe, another, F. candida, is currently known exclusively from Kyrgyzstan, while the third one, temporarily designated here as Formica sp., inhabits the easternmost part of Eurasia from China to Kamchatka. It is unknown how F. picea and Formica sp. are distributed in Siberia and whether their range

Diagnostics and monitoring in Hymenoptera venom allergy: current and future perspectives.

Hymenoptera stings are a major trigger of IgE-mediated anaphylaxis, yet only a minority of exposed individuals develop systemic reactions, making accurate diagnosis essential but complex. This review synthesizes current evidence across clinical, serologic, cellular and molecular diagnostic modalities in Hymenoptera venom allergy. Clinical history and epidemiologic predictors-such as occupation, cumulative sting exposure, reaction latency, comorbidities and quality-of-life impairment, provide crucial context but lack sufficient predictive power when used alone. Skin prick and intradermal testin

In vitro diagnostics in hymenoptera venom allergy: Current concepts and perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA) is a leading cause of anaphylaxis in adults and requires precise diagnostic work-up to guide venom immunotherapy (VIT). However, the high prevalence of asymptomatic sensitization and frequent double sensitization complicate the identification of clinically relevant allergens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This narrative review summarizes current concepts and recent advances in in vitro diagnostics of HVA, including conventional IgE testing, component-resolved diagnostics (CRD), IgE ratio analysis, and cellular assays and biomarkers for risk stratification.

Metamorphosis of the central nervous system of Megaphragma viggianii (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae).

Miniaturization, egg parasitism, and the presence of anucleate neurons in adults can greatly affect the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the central nervous system (CNS) during metamorphosis. Such features have already been shown for the brain of Megaphragma, but have not been examined for other parts of the nervous system. Using histological methods, confocal microscopy, and three-dimensional computer modeling, we describe the structure of the CNS during the pupal development of Megaphragma viggianii (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). The processes of compactization and oligomer
