Intraosseous hemangioma with aneurysmal bone cyst-like changes of the hyoid bone: Case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Intraosseous hemangioma is a rare benign vascular tumor of the bone that can affect any body part; however, the most common site is the vertebra, followed by calvarial bones. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of intraosseous hemangioma in a 23-year-old male who presented a feeling of fullness in the throat for 3 months. The hyoid bone level had a hard mass of about 5 cm. Fine needle aspiration showed 5 mL dark bloody aspirates. Magnetic resonance image showed a 5.3 cm mixed signal intensity lesion in the hyoid body. DIAGNOSIS: Histopathologic examination showed intraosseous hema

Age-related changes of hyoid bone position in healthy older adults with aspiration.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Aspiration, the passage of a bolus below the vocal folds, increases morbidity and mortality in the elderly by increasing the risk of aspiration pneumonia and other conditions. We hypothesized that altered position of the hyoid bone associated with aging may negatively affect airway protection during swallowing (i.e., aspiration) in older adults. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: We re-reviewed computed tomography (CT) scans of the head from 40 older adults (65-80 years old), comprised of 20 aspirators and 20 nonaspirators, obtained from a previous cohort stud

CEPHALOMETRIC ASSESSMENT OF HYOID BONE POSITION IN NIGERIAN PATIENTS WITH BIMAXILLARY INCISOR PROCLINATION.

BACKGROUND: Hyoid bone though constitute a small proportion of the human skeleton, its importance in relation to other facial structures cannot be overemphasized. Several studies have reported on hyoid bone position in relation to various types of malocclusion, however, to our knowledge, there has been no study on the relationship between the hyoid bone and bimaxillary incisor proclination. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the relative position of hyoid bone in individuals with and without bimaxillary incisor proclination as well as other related demographic factors. METHODOLOGY: Thi

Inferior sagittal osteotomy with hyoid bone suspension for obese patients with sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: An inferior sagittal osteotomy with a sliding mandibular osteotomy and hyoid bone suspension, combined with a uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, is advocated in patients with obstructive sleep apnea who fail to tolerate nasal continuous positive airway pressure. Some investigators have suggested that this surgical procedure may be less effective in obese patients. METHODS: Preoperative and postoperative nocturnal polysomnograms and lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained on 12 obese patients with obstructive sleep apnea who underwent these procedures. RESULTS: The mean +/- SD res

Anthropological examination of the hyoid bone, thyroid cartilage, and cricoid cartilage in suicidal hangings.

Thorough evaluation of the hyoid bone, thyroid cartilage, and cricoid cartilage is critical in trauma interpretation as fractures of the neck block are commonly associated with manual strangulation, suicidal hanging, and direct blunt force trauma. The frequency of fractures to laryngohyoid structures is differentially reported in the literature. Between 2019 and 2021, the neck blocks from 56 suicidal hangings were subjected to an anthropological analysis for trauma. The protocol for examining these cases involved radiographs prior to removal of the soft tissues, followed by removal of all soft

Injury of the Hyoid Bone as a Rare Complication in Cervical Spine Rehabilitation: A Case Report.

Neck pain is a common reason for primary care visits, and its differential diagnosis should consider various conditions. The reported incidence of hyoid bone fractures is extremely low, accounting for only 0.002% of all fractures. The most common causes of hyoid bone fractures include strangulation attempts and motor vehicle accidents. We report a case of an uncommon complication of manual therapy of the cervical spine. A 76-year-old woman complained of neck pain that worsened during speaking and swallowing, originating from a neck physiotherapy session. The otolaryngological examination revea

Hyoid Bone Fracture Secondary to a Blunt Neck Trauma: A Report of 2 Cases.

Hyoid bone fracture unrelated to strangulation is a rare occurrence characterized by a subtle presentation. However, it may manifest as a fatal respiratory distress due to airway obstruction. We present 2 cases of hyoid bone fractures that occurred following a traffic accident in 2 male patients. Both patients presented with either a neck pain or a dysphagia. Physical examination findings were limited to neck sensibility at palpation, saliva stasis, and laryngeal congestion at the laryngeal endoscopy. In both patients, the diagnosis was confirmed through computed tomography. In the first patie

Radiographic Evaluation of the Hyoid Bone Position and Pharyngeal Airway Depth in Anteroposterior Dysplasia.

INTRODUCTION: The pharyngeal airway, tongue, and hyoid bone are correlated. The hyoid bone is connected to the pharynx, mandible, and cranium through muscles and ligaments and its position with respect to them determines the tongue posture and function. It also plays an important role in maintaining the airway and upright natural head position. Different skeletal patterns have different morphologies and shapes of the mandible, which might be affected by the position of the hyoid bone and the pharyngeal airway depth. This cephalometric study was conducted to relate the pharyngeal airway depth a

Asymmetry of the greater cornua of the hyoid bone and the superior thyroid cornua: a case report.

The hyoid bone consists of a body and two pairs of processes: the greater cornua (GC) and the lesser cornua. The GC is connected to the superior thyroid cornu (STC) by the lateral thyrohyoid ligament. The GC and the STC share a common embryological origin from the third pharyngeal arch. During anatomical dissection of a male cadaver of 56 years of age, a combined variation of the GC and the STC was found. The left GC was 27.7 mm long, and the right GC was 30 mm long. The left GC axis was in the same plane as the hyoid body, while an angle of 33° was between the right GC axis and the hyoid body

Osteoradionecrosis of the hyoid bone complicated by pharyngocutaneous fistula: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a well-known complication following irradiation of head and neck malignancies. ORN commonly occurs in the mandible but is rarely reported in the hyoid bone. CASE PRESENTATION: A 76-year-old female with a history of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma presented with pharyngocutaneous fistula 14 years after primary chemoradiation. Imaging showed necrosis of the hyoid bone. She underwent excision of the hyoid to rule out malignancy. Pathology was negative for carcinoma, but did show extensive fragmentation and bony necrosis consistent with ORN. The patie
