Thoughts about Suicide and Self-Harm in Patients with Tinnitus and Hyperacusis.

BACKGROUND: There are conflicting reports with regard to the relationship between suicidal ideations and tinnitus and hyperacusis. Audiology departments play a major role in offering therapy and support for patients experiencing tinnitus and hyperacusis. If suicidal and self-harm ideations among patients seen in audiology clinics are high, then it would be important to screen for them to make onward referrals to mental health services. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of and factors related to suicidal and self-harm ideations in patients with tinnitus and hyperacusi

Prevalence and risk factors for reduced sound tolerance (hyperacusis) in children.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of reduced sound tolerance (hyperacusis) in a UK population of 11-year-old children and examine the association of early life and auditory risk factors with report of hyperacusis. DESIGN: A prospective UK population-based study. STUDY SAMPLE: A total of 7097 eleven-year-old children within the Avon longitudinal study of parents and children (ALSPAC) were asked about sound tolerance; hearing and middle-ear function was measured using audiometry, otoacoustic emissions, and tympanometry. Information on neonatal risk factors and socioeconomic factors were ob

Relation of hyperacusis in sensorineural tinnitus patients with normal audiological assessment.

Hyperacusis is mainly a consequence of the noise level in the twenty-first century, owing to dramatic changes in people's lifestyles. Of every 100 people with otological complaints (e.g., tinnitus and hyperacusis), 20 are affected by hyperacusis. Because of its high incidence, this symptom has long been the subject of investigation. Nine patients (eight female, one male) with sensorineural tinnitus voluntarily participated in this study. Among the evaluated patients, three were between 25 and 40 years of age and six were between 41 and 60 years. The patients did not report a history of acousti

Treatment of hyperacusis in Williams syndrome with bilateral conductive hearing loss.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rather rare congenital disorder characterised by a series of cardiovascular, maxillo-facial and skeletal abnormalities. It sometimes displays otorhinolaryngological symptoms because of the relatively high incidence of secretory otitis media and hyperacusis, which may be present in up to 95% of patients. The present paper describes a case of WS associated with bilateral conductive hearing loss which was not related to secretory otitis media. Hyperacusis was, moreover, present in spite of the conductive deafness. Surgical or prosthetic treatment of hearing loss was de

Chronic stress induced loudness hyperacusis, sound avoidance and auditory cortex hyperactivity.

Hyperacusis, a debilitating loudness intolerance disorder, has been linked to chronic stress and adrenal insufficiency. To investigate the role of chronic stress, rats were chronically treated with corticosterone (CORT) stress hormone. Chronic CORT produced behavioral evidence of loudness hyperacusis, sound avoidance hyperacusis, and abnormal temporal integration of loudness. CORT treatment did not disrupt cochlear or brainstem function as reflected by normal distortion product otoacoustic emissions, compound action potentials, acoustic startle reflexex, and auditory brainstem responses. In co

BACKGROUND: Hyperacusis can be defined as an intolerance of certain everyday sounds, which are perceived as too loud or uncomfortable and which cause significant distress and impairment in the individual's day-to-day activities. It is important to assess symptoms of sound intolerance and their impact on the patient's life, so as to evaluate the need for treatment and to assess the effectiveness of treatments. PURPOSE: The aim was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Hyperacusis Impact Questionnaire (HIQ), and the Sound Sensitivity Symptoms Questionnaire (SSSQ). The 8-item HIQ focuse

Evidence of Hyperacusis in Adult Rats Following Non-traumatic Sound Exposure.

Manipulations that enhance neuroplasticity may inadvertently create opportunities for maladaptation. We have previously used passive exposures to non-traumatic white noise to open windows of plasticity in the adult rat auditory cortex and induce frequency-specific functional reorganizations of the tonotopic map. However, similar reorganizations in the central auditory pathway are thought to contribute to the generation of hearing disorders such as tinnitus and hyperacusis. Here, we investigate whether noise-induced reorganizations are accompanied by electrophysiological or behavioral evidence

Early age conductive hearing loss causes audiogenic seizure and hyperacusis behavior.

Recent clinical reports found a high incidence of recurrent otitis media in children suffering hyperacusis, a marked intolerance to an otherwise ordinary environmental sound. However, it is unclear whether the conductive hearing loss caused by otitis media in early age will affect sound tolerance later in life. Thus, we have tested the effects of tympanic membrane (TM) damage at an early age on sound perception development in rats. Two weeks after the TM perforation, more than 80% of the rats showed audiogenic seizure (AGS) when exposed to loud sound (120 dB SPL white noise, < 1 min). The susc

Results of a 6-Month Field Trial of a Transitional Intervention for Debilitating Hyperacusis.

PURPOSE: We present results from a 6-month field trial of a transitional intervention for debilitating primary hyperacusis, including a combination of structured counseling; promotion of safe, comfortable, and healthy sound exposure; and therapeutic broadband sound from sound generators. This intervention is designed to overcome barriers to successful delivery of therapeutic sound as a tool to downregulate neural hyperactivity in the central auditory pathways (i.e., the maladaptive mechanism believed to account for primary hyperacusis) and, together with the counseling, reduce the associated n

Untangling the effects of tinnitus and hypersensitivity to sound (hyperacusis) in the gap detection test.

In recent years, there has been increasing use of the gap detection reflex test to demonstrate induction of tinnitus in animals. Animals with tinnitus show weakened gap detection ability for background noise that matches the pitch of the tinnitus. The usual explanation is that the tinnitus 'fills in the gap'. It has recently been shown, however, that tinnitus is commonly associated with hyperacusis-like enhancements of the acoustic startle response, a change which might potentially alter responses in the gap detection test. We hypothesized that such enhancements could lead to an apparent reduc

Loudness perception affected by high doses of salicylate--a behavioral model of hyperacusis.

The major side-effects of high doses of salicylate include sensorial hearing loss and tinnitus. Although salicylate decreases cochlear output, it enhances the evoked potentials recorded from the central auditory system (CAS), suggesting an increase to sound sensitivity. However, the loudness change after salicylate administration has not yet been directly measured. In this study, we established an operant conditioning based behavioral task in rats and measured their loudness perception changes before and after high doses of salicylate injection (250 mg/kg, i.p.). We found that high doses of sa

Acute stress induces hyperacusis in women with high levels of emotional exhaustion.

BACKGROUND: Hearing problems is one of the top ten public health disorders in the general population and there is a well-established relationship between stress and hearing problems. The aim of the present study was to explore if an acute stress will increase auditory sensitivity (hyperacusis) in individuals with high levels of emotional exhaustion (EE). METHODS: Hyperacusis was assessed using uncomfortable loudness levels (ULL) in 348 individuals (140 men; 208 women; age 23-71 years). Multivariate analyses (ordered logistic regression), were used to calculate odds ratios, including interacti
