A new understanding of oral and dental disorders of the equine incisor and canine teeth.

This article discusses the classification systems for dental fractures and how the assessment affects treatment options. Diagonal incisor malocclusion is discussed in relation to skull asymmetry and how this commonly relates to premolar and molar occlusion. Oral and radiographic assessment of incisive bone fracture and incisor avulsion is reviewed for determining treatment options. A summary of incisor and canine resorption and hypercementosis is presented. Clinical presentations, staging, and classifications of tooth resorption as well as canine odontoplasty are discussed. Excessive plaque an

Advances in the treatment of diseased equine incisor and canine teeth.

Dental therapies for equid incisor and canine teeth have modernized significantly over the last 2 decades. Basic principles in incisor reduction have become more conservative, and extraction procedures more exacting. Periodontal and endodontic treatments are described to save teeth that would have succumbed to extraction in the past. Pathologic impacts on treatment decisions for equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis are significant, and veterinarians and owners need to be aware of treatment options and outcomes. Easy access to equid incisor and canine teeth offers a variety

Lobodontia: the unravelling of the wolf teeth.

Abnormalities of tooth shape and size generally coexist, as both are determined during the morphodifferentiation stage of odontogenesis. This report describes a case of lobodontia exhibiting multiple dental anomalies of which, "fang like" cuspids, multituberculism of molars, hypodontia along with severe generalized microdontia are distinctive. Radiographic features, diagnostic convolutions, differential diagnosis and clinical significance have also been highlighted.

Equine dental and skeletal fluorosis induced by well water consumption.

Two horses that consumed well water with high fluoride content exhibited clinical signs of chronic dental and skeletal fluoride toxicosis and were later euthanized and autopsied. Both horses had degenerative disease of multiple joints and multiple dental defects. Elevated fluoride concentrations were found in bone and tooth samples of both horses, well water, and feed. Microscopically, abnormalities were noted in bone and tooth samples, and consisted mostly of foci of cement necrosis and hypercementosis. Horses exhibiting bilateral, highly symmetrical dental and/or skeletal lesions, with chron

EOTRH Syndrome in Polish Half-Bred Horses - Two Clinical Cases.

The aim of this paper is to thoroughly describe the etiology, diagnostic processes and recommended treatment of equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH). It is a relatively recently described disease. Most recent reports show that it is a common problem involving older equine patients. The most common and significant symptom of EOTRH is oral pain. The main clinical signs include periodontitis and gingivitis with a gingival recession, alveolar bone protrusion, periodontic fistulas and soreness of the incisors. When establishing the final diagnosis, it is necessary to co

A Rare Case of Cementoblastoma of the Second Right Maxillary Premolar in a 30-Year-Old Man.

Cementoblastoma is a benign odontogenic mesenchymal tumor characterized by cementum production. Cementoblastoma is considered a relatively rare neoplasm with a predilection to the posterior region of the mandible. The main clinical differential diagnoses include hypercementosis, cemento-osseous dysplasia, condensing osteitis, idiopathic osteosclerosis, osteoblastoma, odontoma, and osteosarcoma. Imaging findings may be pathognomonic when demonstrative. Although rather identical histologically, cementoblastoma exhibits unequivocal fusion to the root of the tooth, which distinguishes it from oste

Dental fluorosis in cattle.

Five expressions of dental fluorosis are described in cattle exposed to industrial fluoride pollution: 1. Hypercementosis with tooth ankylosis, cementum necrosis and cyst formation; 2. Delayed eruption of permanent incisor teeth; 3 Necrosis of alveolar bone with recession of bone and gingiva; 4. Oblique eruption of permanent teeth, hypoplasia of teeth with diastemata; and 5. Rapid progression of dental lesions. The five entities are not recognized in the "standard for the classification of dental fluorosis" by the National Academy of Sciences. Since this classification it too limited and super

Simple bone cyst. A clinical and histopathologic study of fifteen cases.

Nineteen simple bone cysts found in 15 patients were studied by classifying them into younger and older age groups. The clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic features of 11 cysts in the younger group of 10 patients were consistent with those of previous reports. Among patients in the older age group, female predominance (80% vs 30%), involvement of the maxilla (25% vs 0%), multiple occurrence (60% vs 10%), simultaneous presence of radiopaque fibro-osseous lesions or hypercementosis (63% vs 0%), and loss of lamina dura of related teeth (83% vs 14%) resulting in exposure of their roots on

Histological assessment of pulp condition after apical vital root transection in one root of multirooted teeth in dogs: a preliminary study.

One of the most important aspects in surgery is the healing process after the periapical surgery. Past studies have shown occasional encounters with vital root resection and have noted varying degrees of pulpal response after root resection in periodontal disease. The purpose of this investigation was to observe the pulpal and periapical responses to intentional apical vital root transection in one root of multirooted teeth of German-Canadian dogs over a 6-month postoperative period. This is an experimental study performed on left maxillary and mandibular quadrants of four adult German-Canadia

Reduced orthodontic tooth movement in Ank knockout mice.

Hypercementosis has been previously reported in mice lacking progressive ankylosis protein (Ank KO mice, or Ank, KO - knockout, WT - wildtype) due to decreased levels of the mineralization inhibitor inorganic pyrophosphate. However, the impact of hypercementosis on alveolar bone remodeling and periodontal ligament (PDL) maintenance from orthodontic forces during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) remains unclear. To investigate the roles of ANK protein on tooth movement, PDL maintenance, alveolar bone remodeling, and tooth root resorption, we performed a split-mouth model of OTM induced by a clo

Osteopontin regulates dentin and alveolar bone development and mineralization.

The periodontal complex is essential for tooth attachment and function and includes the mineralized tissues, cementum and alveolar bone, separated by the unmineralized periodontal ligament (PDL). To gain insights into factors regulating cementum-PDL and bone-PDL borders and protecting against ectopic calcification within the PDL, we employed a proteomic approach to analyze PDL tissue from progressive ankylosis knock-out (Ank-/-) mice, featuring reduced PPi, rapid cementogenesis, and excessive acellular cementum. Using this approach, we identified the matrix protein osteopontin (Spp1/OPN) as an

Orthodontic treatment in a patient with sickle cell anemia.

Sickle cell anemia is a common hereditary hematologic disease. It affects many systems and tissues in the body, including the mouth. Delayed tooth eruption, an uncommon degree of periodontitis, alterations in the cells of the tongue surface, hypomaturation and hypomineralization in enamel and dentin, pulp calcifications, hypercementosis, and bone alterations resulting in maxillary protrusion and formation of a thick trabecular pattern are some oral manifestations of the disease. The aim of this study was to report the orthodontic treatment of a patient with sickle cell anemia. Treatment consis

Extraction of upper first molar resulting in fracture of maxillary tuberosity.

Fracture of the maxillary tuberosity sometimes can happen when pneumatization of the maxillary sinus extends between the roots of upper molars. Some factors may lead to this complication including prominent or curved roots, chronic periapical infection, hypercementosis, root ankylosis and tooth fusion. This paper reports a case with fracture of the maxillary tuberosity following extraction of an upper first molar in general dental practice. Prevention from any complication during extractions of maxillary molars with large antral enlargement is possible with careful preoperative examination and

Regressive changes of the dental pulp complex in retained primary molars with congenitally missing successor teeth.

This study was undertaken to investigate the regressive changes occurring in the dental pulp complex (pulp, dentin, and cementum) of retained mandibular primary second molars with congenitally missing bicuspid teeth. Seventeen retained, caries free, primary molars were used. The specimens were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin. Fixed samples were decalcified, routinely prepared, embedded in paraffin, sectioned, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The results demonstrated a reduction in the pulp size, abnormal odontoblastic pattern, declined vascularity, pulp degeneration, pulp stones,

Idiopathic dental root replacement resorption in old dogs.

The roots of the teeth of 33 large dogs aged 10 years or older were radiographed. These dogs were euthanized for reasons other than oral diseases; dogs with obvious dental or periodontal diseases were excluded. The dogs had shown no clinical signs related to the teeth and the teeth were macroscopically normal. Of the 33 dogs, six had one or more teeth that had abnormally shaped and partially resorbed roots, with replacement of root structure by radiographically normal trabecular bone. Histological examination of radiographically abnormal roots revealed mid-root resorption, without signs of inf
