Understanding vestibular-related physiological functions could provide clues on adapting to a new gravitational environment.

The peripheral vestibular organs are sensors for linear acceleration (gravity and head tilt) and rotation. Further, they regulate various body functions, including body stability, ocular movement, autonomic nerve activity, arterial pressure, body temperature, and muscle and bone metabolism. The gravitational environment influences these functions given the highly plastic responsiveness of the vestibular system. This review demonstrates that hypergravity or microgravity induces changes in vestibular-related physiological functions, including arterial pressure, muscle and bone metabolism, feedin

Tolerance of Centrifuge-Simulated Commercial Spaceflight in a Subject with Hemophilia A.

INTRODUCTION: With increasing engagement of commercial spaceflight participants in spaceflight activities, the evaluation of individuals with medical conditions not previously characterized in the spaceflight environment is of particular interest. Factors such as acceleration forces experienced during launch, reentry, and landing of spacecraft could pose an altered risk profile in some individuals due to known disease. Bleeding diatheses present a unique concern in the spaceflight environment given hypergravity exposure and, particularly, the potential for injury resulting from transient or im

Assessing the cardiac function from micro-gravity to hyper-gravity conditions through a validated multiscale modelling approach.

Gravity changes with respect to the 1g terrestrial condition induce several cardiovascular alterations, from fluid shift and blood volume reduction to orthostatic hypotension and venous pooling. Micro-gravity and hyper-gravity exposure characterizes space missions and aeronautical flights, as well as terrestrial analogues such as centrifuges, bed rest studies, and parabolic flights. Despite a growing number of clinical measures becoming available, cardiac function in these extreme conditions is still incomplete and difficult to obtain. Thus, computational haemodynamics provides a powerful and

Sickness induced by head movements after different centrifugal Gx-loads and durations.

It has been found that sustained centrifugation on Earth may evoke sickness symptoms that are similar to those of the Space Adaptation Syndrome (SAS). As in SAS, incidence of this 'Sickness Induced by Centrifugation' (SIC) is about 50% and the symptoms are particularly evoked by head movements. By systematically varying the G-load and duration of centrifugation, the current study investigated the characteristics of the gravitational stimulus that is required for SIC to occur. Subjects were exposed to centrifugation at 2 and 3Gx, for a duration of 45 and 90 minutes. A standardized head movement

Layperson Physiological Tolerance and Operational Performance in Centrifuge-Simulated Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: Prior study has indicated that individuals of varied age, medical history, and limited-to-no experience tolerate spaceflight conditions. We sought to expand upon the understanding of layperson response to hypergravity conditions expected in commercial spaceflight by exposing subjects, following minimal training, to centrifuge-simulated, high-fidelity commercial spaceflight profiles. We further explored how these individuals perform in simulated operational activities during and following hypergravity.METHODS: Volunteer subjects participated in up to five centrifuge runs (maximum

Sexual dimorphism in cerebellar structure, function, and response to environmental perturbations.

Sexual dimorphism of CNS structure and function has been observed in humans and animals, but remains relatively unrecognized in the context of the cerebellum. Recent research in our laboratory has examined whether these gender differences extend to cerebellar structure and function, as well as the impact of environmental factors on the developing cerebellum. Perinatal exposure to both chemical and physical perturbations in the environment (in our experiments, PCBs or hypergravity) affects growth, neurodevelopment, and motor coordination differently in males and females. These neurodevelopmenta

The effects of roll vs. pitch rotation in humans under orthostatic stress.

BACKGROUND: It has been known since 1953 that pre-exposure to less than +1 Gz will reduce subsequent +Gz-tolerance. With few exceptions, during operational flying, the transition from hypogravity to hypergravity involves roll as well as pitch rotation. We examined the effect of roll vs. pitch rotation while undergoing transition from hypogravity to +1 Gz on a tilt table. METHODS: Twelve subjects (28-47 yr old) were rotated at 45 degrees x s(-1) from head-up (HU) at 15 degrees relative to gravitational vertical to 135 degrees head-down (HD) and back to the HU position after different HD dwell

Effects of hyper +Gz acceleration on brainstem and auditory cortical evoked potentials and cerebral blood flow in anesthetized rats.

Hypergravity acceleration along the long axis of the body (Gz) causes severe cardiovascular dysfunctions. Many studies have been conducted along this line. However, most previous studies used rather a short duration of hyper-Gz application, up to 30 sec, because application of large hyper-Gz brings animals into death. In order to elucidate effects of long duration of Gz application, we made experiments with Gz load for as long as 1000 sec. Cardiovascular dysfunctions and reduction of arterial blood pressure were usually accompanied by reduction of cerebral blood flow, leading subjects into los

A Pilot Study of Salivary MicroRNA Changes Due to High G-Load.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding physiological responses to high G-load is important for ensuring flight safety. In this pilot study, to establish a methodology for detecting salivary microRNAs (miRNAs) in humans before and after high G-load, we examined the relationship between miRNAs and high G-load or G-induced loss of consciousness (G-LOC), referencing previous concussion studies. METHODS: This study included 25 healthy pilot trainees attending centrifuge training for the primary course from June to October 2023. Saliva samples were collected at 3 time points: the day before centrifuge trainin

Production of semi-dry wine using cape gooseberry under very high gravity conditions with preserved antioxidant properties.

In this study, we have reported production of a semi-dry fruit wine using Cape Gooseberry for the first time using very high gravity conditions at laboratory scale. Employing industrial strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the batch fermentation was carried out at room temperature in 1-l flasks in triplicates. The moisture content of fruit was calculated to be 80% after 24 days. The °Bx of raw fruit juice was found to be 4.9 and was raised to 25°Bx on addition of sucrose, the yeast assimilable nitrogen content of cape goose berry juice was calculated to be 280 mg N/L. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster remains a promising model organism for research in space biology.

Exploring deep space and creation of bases on other bodies in the Solar System requires increased spaceflight duration and prolonged exposure to different gravity conditions. Most physiological changes under these conditions occur at the cellular level, but the long-term consequences of such effects remain unexplored. The structural and functional characteristics of cells are similar across animal species, but research into issues related to aging and lifespan, development and the reproductive system, the transgenerational inheritance of information about environmental factors is more convenie

Investigation on a high gravity device for reduction of NOx emission from marine diesel engines.

High gravity technology, as a process intensification technology, has demonstrated the great advantages in the field of gas purification on account of its excellent mass transfer efficiency and energy-efficient, but it is rarely applied in the field of nitrogen oxides (NOx) purification of marine diesel engine exhaust. In this paper, a high-gravity bowl-shaped-disk rotating bed (HBRB) without catalytic was designed for diesel exhaust after-treatment. A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) was installed in the front of the HBRB to regenerate more nitrogen dioxide (NO2) easily reduced by urea. A benc

Centrifuge-Simulated Spaceflight After Aortic Valve Replacement and Atrial Septal Defect Repair.

INTRODUCTION: Human access to space is expanding rapidly in the commercial environment, with various private companies offering commercial flights to spaceflight participants (SFPs). SFPs are more likely than career astronauts to have medical conditions novel to spaceflight and may not have undergone as rigorous a medical screening process as that used for career astronauts, representing new and unstudied risks in the spaceflight environment. We report participation of a subject with recent median sternotomy for aortic valve replacement and atrial septal defect closure in centrifuge-simulated

Onset of positional vertigo during exposure to combined G loading and chest-to-spine vibration.

BACKGROUND: Aerospace environments commonly expose pilots to vibration and sustained acceleration, alone and in combination. CASE REPORTS: Of 16 experimental research participants, 3 reported symptoms of vertigo and signs of torsional nystagmus during or shortly following exposure to sustained chest-to-spine (+3.8 Gx) acceleration (G loading) and chest-to-spine (0.5 g(x)) vibration in the 8-16 Hz band. Two of the participants reported intermittent vertigo for up to 2 wk, were diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), and were treated successfully with the Epley Maneuver. On

Arrhythmias observed during high-G training: proposed training safety criterion.

INTRODUCTION: Most arrhythmias during centrifuge training are physiological responses to high +Gz stress. However, potentially dangerous arrhythmias occasionally occur during centrifuge training. We reviewed all arrhythmias recorded during the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) centrifuge training from April 2001 to March 2003, and developed a criterion for suspending G-training based on observed arrhythmias. METHOD: There were 195 male fighter pilots who received high-G centrifuge training monitored with electrocardiographs (ECGs). We evaluated types and occurrences of all arrhythmias duri

Effect of altered gravity on the neurobiology of fish.

In vertebrates (including humans) altered gravitational environments such as weightlessness can induce malfunction of the inner ears due to a mismatch between canal and statolith afferents. This leads to an illusionary tilt because the inputs from the inner ear are not confirmed by the other sensory organs, which then results in intersensory conflict. Vertebrates in orbit therefore face severe orientation problems. In humans the intersensory conflict may additionally lead to a malaise commonly referred to as space motion sickness (SMS). After the initial days of weightlessness the orientation

Cerebellar morphology and behavioural correlations of the vestibular function alterations in weightlessness.

In humans and other vertebrates, the range of disturbances and behavioural changes induced by spaceflight conditions are well known. Sensory organs and the central nervous system (CNS) are forced to adapt to new environmental conditions of weightlessness. In comparison with peripheral vestibular organs and behavioural disturbances in weightlessness conditions, the CNS vestibular centres of vertebrates, including the cerebellum, have been poorly examined in orbital experiments, as well as in experimental micro- and hypergravity. However, the cerebellum serves as a critical control centre for le

Gravity related research with fishes--perspectives in regard to the upcoming International Space Station, ISS.

During the entire evolution of life on Earth, the development of all organisms took place under constant gravity conditions, against which they achieved specific countermeasures for compensation and adaptation. On this background, it is still an open question to which extent altered gravity such as hypergravity (centrifuge) or microgravity (spaceflight) affects the normal individual development, either on the systemic level of the whole organism or on the level of individual organs or even single cells. The present review provides information on these questions, comprising gravistimulated effe

G tolerance and pulmonary effects of removing chest counterpressure during pressure breathing.

BACKGROUND: In agile fighter aircraft positive pressure breathing is commonly used as part of the anti-G ensemble. To optimize G protection and prevent over-distention of the lungs, increased airway pressure is balanced by applying a counterpressure to the chest. The aim was to investigate the efficacy of chest counterpressure. METHODS: Three series of experiments were performed using the anti-G ensemble of the 39 Gripen aircraft (AGE-39) and exposing the subjects to 20-s G time profiles; in the first (n = 12) up to +8.0 Gz, in the second (n = 9) up to + 9.0 Gz, and also to simulated aerial c
