Pustulotic arthroosteitis is characterized by the association of inflammatory and hyperostotic skeletal changes, primarily of the anterior chest wall, and chronic recurrent skin lesions of the palms and soles known as pustulosis palmaris et plantaris. Since its first description by Sonozaki in 1981 in Japan, it has also been reported by several European authors and become widely accepted as a separate entity within the spectrum of the seronegative spondylarthropathies. In this report, we describe 11 cases seen in our clinic in the years 1985 to 1992. Course and severity of the disease varied g

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH), the main clinical manifestation of chronic non-bacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) in adults, is associated with various degrees of chronic pain and restricted shoulder girdle function. We evaluated the impact of CNO/SCCH on quality of life (QoL) and its determinants in 136 adult patients with this rare auto-inflammatory bone disorder using the Short Form 36, Brief Pain Inventory, Brief Illness Perception, Utrecht Coping List, and Shoulder Rating questionnaires. Data were compared with those of the general Dutch population, patients with chronic pain, fibro

OBJECTIVE: To assess the basic features and outcomes of synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome.
METHODS: We identified all patients seen in our unit between 1990 and 2008 diagnosed according to the proposed inclusion criteria with SAPHO syndrome, who had a followup of at least 2 years.
RESULTS: Seventy-one patients (48 women, 23 men) with SAPHO syndrome were identified. The median disease duration at the end of followup was 10 years (interquartile range [IQR] 7-15 years), and the median followup duration was 11 years (IQR 6-11.5 years). Six patients were dia

Computed tomography of lumbar spine in a case of pustulotic arthroosteitis demonstrates unusual proliferative changes of syndesmophytes and of the vertebral body. The osseous structures look "frayed out" and resemble the changes of sternoclavicular hyperostosis in early stages. A three dimensional picture shows that these proliferative changes apparently consist of irregular strips of bone. In addition, the vertebral body is surrounded by a soft tissue structure which probably indicates a perivertebral inflammatory process. Radiological changes of the lumbar spine in pustulotic arthroosteitis

OBJECTIVES: Chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) is a rare inflammatory bone disease. The distinct CNO subtype that affects the anterior chest wall is descriptively named sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH) and mainly occurs in adults. Literature on CNO/SCCH is scattered and lacks diagnostic and therapeutic consensus.
METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis aiming to characterize clinical presentation and therapeutic modalities applied in adult CNO/SCCH patients. Untransformed numerical data and double-arcsine transformed proportional data were pooled in a random effects model
