Colorectal cancer is a common malignant disease with increasing incidence and a significant cause of death in cancer patients. More than 10% of patients with colorectal cancer show peritoneal carcinomatosis at initial diagnosis. Moreover, peritoneal metastasis is a common sign of recurrence. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are a new treatment strategy for highly selected patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. Numerous studies show prolonged survival after CRS and HIPEC with acceptable morbidity and mortality rates. Accurate preoperative diagn

Ovarian cancer is the deadliest gynecological malignancy, with high relapse and drug resistance rates. Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) combined with cytoreductive surgery and systemic chemotherapy has improved survival in patients with peritoneal metastases, though findings remain inconsistent. This study investigates whether the benefits of HIPEC are due to the additional chemotherapy or the combination with hyperthermia. High-grade and non-high-grade serous ovarian cancer cell lines were treated with carboplatin and paclitaxel. Additionally, the cells were treated with cisp

OBJECTIVES: Palliative care (PC) for patients with advanced cancer has been associated with improved symptom burden and quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to characterise postoperative symptoms of cytoreductive surgery (CRS)/hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) patients and to assess PC impact by analysing symptom burden before and after PC interventions.
METHODS: CRS/HIPEC patients with two PC visits within 5 months postoperatively (2016-2021) at a tertiary care centre were identified from a retrospective database. For each patient, documentation of QoL-associated symptoms

Peritoneal carcinosis has historically been considered as inoperable, although the technique of its resesection together with high dose intraperitoneal chemotherapy potentiated by heat has been described decades ago. It has not became a widely practiced routine except in specialized centers - the complex technique, weakly standardized but resource demanding chemotherapy, lacking financial background and the many times questionable clinical benefit at a cost of high surgical load might have been the key factors. Refined technology, developing chemotherapy protocols together with growing clinica

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei syndrome (PMP) is an orphan disease. Surgery is the fundament of treatment.
METHOD: Short review summarizing the state of the art treatment.
RESULTS: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) in combination with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) form the foundations of treatment for PMP. The peritoneal cancer index should be preoperatively determined based on imaging and/or laparoscopy, intraoperatively validated and both should be documented. An extraperitoneal surgical preparation technique leads to effective en bloc resection of the peritoneum and the

INTRODUCTION: Patients with clinical T4 gastric cancers have high recurrence rates and low 5-year overall survival (OS) despite radical gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy. The invisible peritoneal metastasis may result in local recurrence due to the tumor invading the serosa and nearby organs. Prophylactic hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has been suggested as an adjuvant treatment strategy in these patients. We evaluated the efficacy of prophylactic HIPEC post-gastrectomy for patients with clinical T4 gastric cancer.

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is used to treat peritoneal carcinomatosis, which often is secondary to gastrointestinal and ovarian cancers. During CRS, the surgeon resects cancerous tumors from the peritoneal cavity. During HIPEC, a chemotherapy agent is introduced into a solution that flows in and out of catheters in the abdominal cavity for approximately 90 minutes. The chemoperfusate is heated to 42° C (107.6° F), which kills cancer cells but is nonthreatening to normal cells. A primary goal of combining CRS with HIPEC is to apply targete

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare clinical condition characterized by mucinous ascites, typically related to appendiceal or ovarian tumours. Current standard treatment involves cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), but recurrences occur in 20-30 per cent of patients. The aim of this study was to define the timing and patterns of recurrence to provide a basis for modifying follow-up of these patients.
METHODS: This observational study examined a prospectively developed multicentre national database (RENAPE working group) to identify

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are used in the management of selected peritoneal malignancies. While most patients achieve long-term disease-free survival, there remains a group with early recurrence (ER). We aim to investigate the clinical factors associated with ER.
METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database of CRS-HIPEC patients treated between April 2001 and Feb 2016 was performed. ER was defined as recurrence within 12 months of CRS-HIPEC. Patients were stratified according to time to recurrence an

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In highly selected patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis, cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) can be an aggressive but worthwhile treatment regimen. Resection of the rectosigmoid is frequently performed with CRS. The aim of the study was to assess the safety of the rectal anastomosis in this setting.
METHODS: Between 2005 and 2016, 436 patients underwent CRS/HIPEC. Clinical data were analyzed with respect to the morbidity associated with a rectum resection.
RESULTS: In 436 patients, 174 rectum resections (40

Peritoneal carcinomatosis (ptc) represents advanced malignant disease and has generally been associated with a grim prognosis. Peritoneal surface malignancy is often the major source of morbidity and mortality; it is of major concern in cancer management. Although ptc is categorized as metastatic disease, it represents a special disease pattern considered to be a locoregional disease limited to the abdominal cavity. The combination of cytoreductive surgery (crs) and intraoperative hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (hipec) has successfully been used as locoregional treatment for selecte

UNLABELLED: Surgical cytoreduction combined with intraperitoneal chemo-hyperthermia (HIPEC) has shown to provide survival benefits in the management of some peritoneal carcinomatosis. The cisplatin (CP) used in HIPEC carries a risk of renal impairment (RI). This risk could be reduced by administration of amifostine (A). The aim of our study was to assess the utility of A in preventing RI during IPCH with CP.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study including patients who underwent HIPEC between January 2007 and June 2013. The HIPEC involved administration of CP and mitomycin C, between 41 an

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm. Due to the limited understanding of its biology and behaviour, peritoneal mesothelioma poses a diagnostic and management challenge. The management of peritoneal mesothelioma has been controversial; systemic chemotherapy, palliative surgery and cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with intraoperative hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) have been described.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study shares our experience with cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC for 5 out of the 6 cases of peritoneal mesotheliomas treated surgically, at a single
