This chapter reviews key electrophysiological and neuroimaging findings on the neural mechanisms underlying hypnosis and its modulation of experimentally induced pain, with an emphasis on the roles of hypnotizability and the content of suggestions. Highly hypnotizable (HH) individuals consistently report reduced pain and emotional distress under hypnotic hypoalgesia, although effects on somatosensory-evoked potentials (SERPs) vary due to methodological differences in induction techniques and experimental paradigms. EEG time-frequency analyses and oscillatory studies offer more consistent resul

Increasing numbers of research studies have offered evidence regarding awareness of verified events during near-death experiences (NDEs) occurring during cardiac arrest and severely impaired brain function. The prevalence of patients reporting core NDEs under these conditions is reported as 10-12 %. One question that is often asked is why this percentage is low. Though it may be hypothesized that NDEs are limited to this low percentage of patients, it is also possible that more patients experience an NDE, but that memory is impaired sufficiently such that the NDE is not recalled. The authors posits that the central mechanisms in cases of multiple personality appears to be spontaneous self-hypnosis. As the syndrome is a product of hypnosis and as excellent hypnotic subjects are potentially able to induce a variety of psychiatric symptoms, these patients report many symptoms referable to other major syndromes. This accounts for the many diagnoses attributable to them. The study of multiple personalities offers insights into the capabilities of hypnosis, the genesis of an unconscious, and the mechanism of repression.

In such procedures as the Harrington operation for idiopathic scoliosis, evaluation of spinal cord function is advisable immediately after the back is straightened. The authors have used hypnosis for this procedure, as an adjunct to anesthetic management. Patients are awakened on the table, given lower extremity tests, and are then reanesthetized. The incidence of postoperative pain and other discomfort is also reduced by hypnosis.

Expectancy theory of hypnosis posits that any procedure can serve as a hypnotic induction provided it is labeled as "hypnosis". The present study explored this hypothesis by contrasting the effects of two conventional and two unconventional (placebo) hypnotic inductions on hypnotic experiences and electrophysiological correlates. In a 2 × 2 balanced placebo design, all participants were exposed to four conditions: conventional induction labeled as "hypnosis", conventional induction labeled as "control", unconventional induction labeled as "hypnosis", and unconventional induction labeled as "co

BACKGROUND: Previous reviews report moderate reductions in clinical pain with hypnotic suggestion but provide only partial views by comparing hypnosis with inactive controls alone or including few studies or mixed control groups. This review comprehensively evaluated the efficacy of hypnosis in reducing clinical pain intensity compared with non-active and active controls.
METHODS: Systematic review following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) review guidelines with comprehensive literature search and meta-analysis. A total of 106 studies met inclusion

Hypnosis has been around for a long time, and is now accepted as a mind-body practice that complements the treatment process. Within our hospital structure, we have set up hypnosis sessions for hospital staff. These "times for oneself" enable patients to mobilize their internal resources. These practices help to legitimize hypnosis as a complementary form of nursing care.

The field of hypnosis has intrigued clinicians and researchers alike for more than 200 years. Below, a review of hypnosis is presented from historical, theoretical, experimental, and clinical perspectives in order to provide those readers less aware of the field with a broad foundation. The literature reveals that while theoretically driven experimental research has led to groundbreaking clinical applications, there remains much to be done regarding dissemination of efficacious interventions and our understanding of underlying mechanisms responsible for observed effects. The goal is to inspire

INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic hypnosis appears to offer psychological and physiological benefits in various medical fields, but despite increasing interest, its value for anaesthesia remains inconclusive.
METHODS: We searched for studies of any design in which hypnosis was used for any intervention requiring the presence of an anaesthetist, alone or in combination with any type of anaesthesia, on children and adults. Meta-analyses using random-effects models were stratified on hypnosis timing, when three or more randomised controlled trials reported on a similar outcome. Additional analyses were

Aspects of hypnosis and its application in psychotherapy, psychosomatics and medicine are examined and contextualized in the 250-year history of hypnosis. Imagination as an essential element of hypnotic treatments appeared as early as 1784 as an argument rejecting the theory of animal magnetism of Franz Anton Mesmer. In somnambulism of German romanticism, another proto-form of hypnosis after 1800, concepts of the mind-body problem were dealt with, which still characterize the understanding of unconscious mental processes today. Hypnosis was at the beginning of psychoanalysis, but was not pursu

A randomised trial published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia describes hypnosis compared with general anaesthesia in 60 children undergoing superficial surgery. We describe a definition of clinical hypnosis; the goals and conduct of hypnotic communication; and its potential as both an adjunct and, in suitable cases, alternative to traditional pharmacological anaesthesia.

This issue of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis provides a landmark international survey of clinicians across 31 countries regarding current practices and views of clinical hypnosis. Thirty-six common uses of hypnosis were identified including stress reduction, wellbeing, and other applications. The most common approaches to hypnotherapy were Ericksonian, Hypnotic Relaxation Therapy, and Traditional Hypnosis. Commentaries are provided by leading experts in the field of clinical and experimental hypnosis.

The role of the patient in hypnotherapy can be underestimated by both the therapist and the patient. This is likely due to the focus the hypnosis literature has had on the role played by the hypnotist/therapist and less on the phenomenological control (control over subjective experience) applied by the patient. Whilst early approaches to hypnosis and hypnotherapy included concepts such as autosuggestion and self-hypnosis, the role of the self has been largely overlooked. Here we aim to highlight the importance of the self in hypnotherapy and hypnosis by considering the concept of self-hypnosis

BACKGROUND: Dementia has negative implications for the quality of life of person and lead to situations of distress. Hypnosis is effective in several health domains but its use in people with dementia is debated.
OBJECTIVE: The aim was to scope the research activity on the use of hypnosis with persons with dementia to manage their distress, symptoms or daily life.
METHOD: We used five international databases: PubMed/Medline, the Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar.
RESULTS: Only seven articles were listed and three articles described the same longitudinal pilot stu

INTRODUCTION: Hypnosis might represent an interesting complementary therapeutic approach to movement disorders, as it takes into account not only symptoms, but also well-being, and empowers patients to take a more active role in their treatment.
METHODS: Our review of the literature on the use of hypnosis to treat movement disorders was done by systematically searching the PubMed database for reports published between 1984 and November 2015. The following variables were extracted from each selected paper: study design; sample size; type of movement disorder; hypnotic procedure; treatment dura

This case study describes in detail the role of hypnosis in treatment of a case of psychogenic vomiting. The patient, a 60-yearold woman, had been suffering for 9 months from episodes of vomiting which resulted in weight loss, dehydration, and hypokalemia. She was a conscientious woman with high standards of behavior, which did not allow an expression of the extreme hostility she felt toward her daughter-in-law. Hypnotherapeutic sessions reduced her anxiety, restored her sleep, improved mood, and helped deepen rapport, all of which created the ideal setting for Gestalt's empty chair technique.

Rosa damascena has been found to act on central nervous system including brain. It inhibits the reactivity of the hypothalamous and pituitary systems in rat. In traditional medicine hypnotic effect of Rose is also suggested. In the present study hypnotic effect of ethanolic, aqueous and chloroformic extracts of R. damascena was investigated in mice. Hypnotic method was based on potentiation of pentobarbital induced sleeping time by extracts. Three doses of extracts (100, 500 and 1000 mg/kg) were injected i.p. in comparison with diazepam (3mg/kg) as positive control and saline as negative contr

A 21 year old patient reported a relatively rapid onset of serious chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), with her worst symptoms being cognitive impairments. Congruent with research on rapid onset CFS, she had no psychiatric history and specialized testing did not suggest that somatization was likely. Neuroimaging and EEG research has documented brain dysfunction in cases of CFS. Therefore, a quantitative EEG was done, comparing her to a normative data base. This revealed excessive left frontal theta brainwave activity in an area previously implicated in SPECT research. Therefore, a novel treatment
