Clinical and histological characterization of transient dermal pain triggered by sweating stimuli.

BACKGROUND: Tingling dermal pain triggered by sweating impairs the lives of patients with cholinergic urticaria and generalized anhidrosis. However, dermal pain evoked by sweating stimuli has been under investigated. METHODS: To clarify characteristics of tingling dermal pain on sweating, we retrospectively evaluated clinical and histopathological manifestations in 30 patients having the main problem of dermal pain on sweating, and the efficacy of treatments. RESULTS: Dermal pain upon sweating affected mostly young males. It accompanied eruptions upon sweating and/or hypohidrosis in 24 patie

Ross Syndrome: A Case Report and Review of Cases from India.

Ross syndrome is a rare dysautonomia characterized by a clinical complex of segmental anhidrosis or hypohidrosis, areflexia, and tonic pupils. A very few cases (≃50) have been reported in literature since its original description in 1958. Here, we report the case of a middle-aged homemaker from Odisha, India, who presented with complaints of segmental hypohidrosis for the past 7 years.

Correlation of disease activity and serum level of carcinoembryonic antigen in acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis: A case report.

Hypohidrosis and anhidrosis are congenital or acquired conditions which are characterized by inadequate sweating. Acquired idiopathic generalized hypohidrosis/anhidrosis (AIGA) includes idiopathic pure sudomotor failure (IPSF), which has the following distinct features: sudden onset in youth, increased serum immunoglobulin E and responds favorably to systemic corticosteroid. No clinical markers reflecting the disease severity or activity have been established. Here, we report a case of AIGA in a Japanese patient successfully treated with repeated methylprednisolone pulse therapy. In this case,

[Surgical treatment for compensatory hyperhidrosis in Adie syndrome].

Ross syndrome is characterized by a triad of tonic pupil, areflexia and segmental hypohidrosis. Hypohidrosis may be accompanied by contralateral hyperhidrosis, probably due to a compensatory mechanism. We report a case of Ross syndrome with socially disabling left-sided hyperhidrosis. Sympathectomy of the second and third thoracic ganglia was performed with satisfactory results. With excellent results in primary hyperhidrosis and very low morbidity, thoracic sympathectomy is the definitive treatment for hyperhidrosis.

Ross syndrome: treatment of segmental compensatory hyperhidrosis by a modified iontophoretic device.

In 1958 the triad of tonic pupils, areflexia (Holmes-Adie syndrome), and hypohidrosis was first described by Ross. Since then more than 15 patients with a similar condition have been described. Two cases with the typical triad in combination with associated autonomic dysfunctions are presented. Subjectively, the most disturbing symptom is segmental compensatory hyperhidrosis, which results from widespread hypohidrosis or anhidrosis. For treatment of hyperhidrosis, tap water iontophoresis was applied using a modified technique with special electrodes. In both patients the hyperhidrosis was reli

Pathophysiology and assessment of neuropathic pain in Fabry disease.

UNLABELLED: Severe neuropathic pain and hypohidrosis are important symptoms of Fabry disease, particularly in the first three decades of life. The pain is associated with a length-dependent small-fibre neuropathy that also causes a selective deficiency of cold perception. Cold exposure often accentuates the pain and worsens thermal perception. The hypohidrosis leads to poor exercise and heat tolerance. The mechanisms by which alpha-galactosidase A deficiency causes these physiological abnormalities are poorly understood. The stored glycolipid (globotriaosylceramide) may interfere with the func

Lymphocytic autoimmune hidradenitis, cutaneous leucocytoclastic vasculitis and primary Sjögren's syndrome.

We describe a 60-year-old woman with primary Sjögren's syndrome, mixed cryoglobulinaemia and cutaneous leucocytoclastic vasculitis who developed generalized hypohidrosis with a markedly decreased sweating response to pilocarpine chloride. Skin biopsies demonstrated dense peri-eccrine lymphocytic infiltrates in the lower reticular dermis, with glandular atrophy. From previous studies it is evident that although patients with Sjögren's syndrome commonly have skin dryness, a lymphocytic hidradenitis has been documented only in a few cases. The histological findings in this case support the role o

Dermatopathia pigmentosa reticularis: a report of a family demonstrating autosomal dominant inheritance.

Dermatopathia pigmentosa reticularis is a rare heritable disorder consisting of a triad of cutaneous findings including reticulate hyperpigmentation, noncicatricial alopecia, and onychodystrophy. In addition to this triad, other variable features of dermatopathia pigmentosa reticularis have been described, including adermatoglyphia, hypohidrosis or hyperhidrosis, and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis. Only 10 cases have been described in the world literature to date, and no clear inheritance pattern has been demonstrated. We present a patient with the classic features of the dermatopathia pigmentosa

A case of dermatopathia pigmentosa reticularis.

Dermatopathia pigmentosa reticularis (DPR) is a very rare disorder with the diagnostic triad of generalized reticulate hyperpigmentation, noncicatricial alopecia, and onychodystrophy. Many other dermatologic findings have been associated with this triad, including adermatoglyphia, hypohidrosis or hyperhidrosis, palmoplantar hyperkeratosis, and nonscarring blisters on the dorsa of the hands and feet. The mode of inheritance is unclear but may be autosomally dominant. To our knowledge, only 11 cases have been reported in the world, and none has previously been described in the Orient. We present

Sweating ability of patients with p63-associated syndromes.

Sweating deficiency has been reported to represent a cardinal symptom of ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft lip/palate syndrome and ankyloblepharon-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft lip/palate syndrome, two rare p63-associated disorders. According to online resources, hypohidrosis may lead to most life-threatening complications in affected patients. Thus, counseling on the prevention of hyperthermia would be indispensable in case of such syndromes, although detailed information on this issue is missing in the literature. We investigated 14 individuals with ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft

Use of the Rash Appearance to Distinguish Cholinergic Urticaria Subtypes: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Cholinergic urticaria (CholU) is characterized by pruritic papular wheals induced by various temperature-elevating stimuli such as exercise, bathing, and emotional stress. Although it is considered important to classify CholU into subtype on the basis of the pathogenesis and clinical features for better management, few studies have evaluated the rash type as a clinical feature. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the associations between different types of rashes in CholU and their clinical phenotypes, and to consider the mechanisms underlying each type of rash. METHODS: We cond

Risk of Death, Infections, and Hyperthermia in Ectodermal Dysplasias: A Nationwide Study.

This nationwide population-based study investigated the risk of death, infections, and hyperthermia in Danish patients with ectodermal dysplasia (ED). A validated cohort of ED patients (n = 396) and matched population comparators (n = 3960) was compared to assess these risks before (case-control analysis) and after ED diagnosis (cohort analysis). Using matched comparators as a reference, the overall hazard ratio (HR) for death was 1.33 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.70-2.55) in ED patients, and particularly high in males with hypohidrosis (HR 3.77, 95% CI 1.57-9.03) and individuals diagnosed

Quality of life of cutaneous disease in the ectodermal dysplasias.

The ectodermal dysplasias are a complex, heritable group of syndromes that affect derivatives of ectoderm. The dermatologist plays an important role in ectodermal dysplasias as the visible defects of skin, hair, and nails are often recognized first. Our objective was to examine how quality of life relates to the degree of skin involvement in ectodermal dysplasias. Subjects (n = 42) with ectodermal dysplasias were surveyed at national and regional conferences hosted by National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias on July 26 to 28, 2007 and November 17, 2007. Severity of hypohidrosis, alopecia,

Sweat gland disturbances in granuloma annulare and necrobiosis lipoidica.

We studied sweat gland distribution, density and activity in thirteen cases of granuloma annulare and ten cases of necrobiosis lipoidica, using a combination of the plastic impression and starch-iodine methods. The pattern of sweat gland disturbance in the two diseases was entirely different. In necrobiosis lipoidica an intense and uniform hypohidrosis was detected throughout the lesion, whereas in granuloma annulare the disturbance followed the morphology of the lesion (the papular border showed complete anhidrosis, whereas the flat central part of the lesion showed only moderate hypohidrosis

HELIX Syndrome, a Claudinopathy with Relevant Dermatological Manifestations: Report of Two New Cases.

HELIX syndrome (Hypohidrosis-Electrolyte disturbances-hypoLacrimia-Ichthyosis-Xerostomia) (MIM#617671) (ORPHA:528105), described in 2017, is due to an abnormal claudin 10 b protein, secondary to pathogenic CLDN10 variants. So far, only ten families have been described. We aim to describe the phenotype in the first Spanish family identified, highlight the skin anomalies as an important clue, and expand the genotypic spectrum. Two adult brothers from consanguineous parents with suspected ectodermal dysplasia (ED) since early childhood were re-evaluated. A comprehensive phenotypic exam and an aCG

Clinical and molecular features of four families with CLDN10-related HELIX syndrome.

Biallelic pathogenic variants in CLDN10 cause the very rare and distinct multiplex epithelium dysfunction manifested by hypohidrosis and electrolyte imbalance (HELIX) syndrome. HELIX patients often present with heat intolerance and reduced tear secretion. Here, we report on eight new patients (four families) who presented soon after birth with fine scales in the palms and soles and hypohidrosis that was associated with high body temperature. Exome sequencing identified a novel homozygous pathogenic variant in CLDN10 in one family (NM_006984:exon1:c.138G>A:p.W46*) and a previously reported path

Effective treatment of severe thermodysregulation by oral retinoids in a patient with recessive congenital lamellar ichthyosis.

Ichthyoses are a heterogenous group of keratinization disorders, which are often associated with hypohidrosis. We report a 42-year-old man with generalized thick brownish scales and severe thermodysregulation leading to heat intolerance. Based on clinical, histological and genetic findings, autosomal recessive lamellar ichthyosis (ultrastructural electron microscopy type III) was diagnosed. Severe generalized hypohidrosis both at rest and after physical exercise (bicycle ergometer) was documented. Oral treatment with retinoids not only markedly improved the skin condition but also restarted th

Dyshidrosis is associated with reduced amplitudes in electrically evoked pain-related potentials in women with Fabry disease.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate A-delta fiber conduction in mild to moderate Fabry disease (FD) patients using pain-related evoked potentials (PREP). METHODS: In this case-control study we prospectively investigated 58 patients with mild to moderate FD and compared data with those of healthy controls. Small fiber function (quantitative sensory testing, QST and sympathetic skin response, SSR), morphology (intraepidermal nerve fiber density, IENFD), and electrical conduction (PREP) were assessed and correlated with sweating as major autonomic function disturbed in FD. Patients were further stratified
