Directional and spatial motor intentional disorders in patients with right versus left hemisphere strokes.

OBJECTIVE: Motor intentional disorders (MIDs) are characterized by dysfunction in the preparation, initiation, maintenance, and termination of goal-oriented actions. In this study, we investigated (1) whether patients with right hemisphere strokes (RHS) and left hemisphere strokes (LHS) differ in the frequency of delayed action initiation (hypokinesia) and motor impersistence; (2) whether there is a directional or hemispatial component of hypokinesia or motor impersistence; (3) whether there is an association between the presence of hemispatial neglect and tests for MID; and (4) the location o

'Albendazole' in intestinal helminthiasis.

UNLABELLED: Cardiotoxicity or cardiomyopathy is a common side effect of the use of anthracyclines for the treatment of cancer patients. Anthracyclines produce their harmful effect on the heart after several cumulative doses; however, it is rare to find the development of cardiotoxicity after only the first dose of chemotherapy. We report a case of a young male known to have acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) who developed cardiotoxicity following the first dose of doxorubicin. The patient presented with dyspnoea, orthopnoea and chest pain, and bilateral limb oedema. He had a significant hypox

Immunocompetent cells producing humoral mediators of bone tissue mineral metabolism during space flight simulation.

During 120-day and 370 day hypokinesia the possibility has been shown of manifestation of mechanism of immunological regulation of osteoclast functions. Supernatants of mononuclear peripheral blood cells which were in vitro nitrogen-stimulated, had an increased potential for resorption in 45Ca-labelled mice fetus long bone organ cultures. Resorbing activity was increased in mononuclear supernatants from some of the subjects exposed to 120-day hypokinesia and from all subjects exposed to 370-day hypokinesia. This variable returned to base-line values after completion of the bed-rest period. Lym

Study of gastric and gallbladder kinetics with real-time ultrasonography in cases of functional dyspepsia.

Gastric and gallbladder emptying in 113 patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) were evaluated by real-time ultrasonography (RUS) after a liquid-fat meal by the patients, and compared with 15 healthy volunteers. The results showed that in FD group 69 patients (61.06%) had delayed gastric emptying, and 28 patients (24.77%) had gallbladder hypokinesia. Among them both delayed gastric emptying and gallbladder hypokinesia were found in 11 patients (9.7%), 44 patients (38.93%) had normal gastric emptying and 85 patients (75.22%) had normal gallbladder emptying.

Thrombo-embolic renal infarction in a case of mid-ventricular takotsubo syndrome.

Thrombo-embolism is one of the serious complications of takotsubo syndrome (TS). It typically occurs in the classical mid-apical left ventricular ballooning form of TS. This complication has not been reported in cases of left mid-ventricular ballooning type of TS. We describe a 67-year-old woman who presented with 2-3 days of increasing signs and symptoms of heart failure. Echocardiography showed marked hypokinesia/akinesia in the mid-anterior, mid-anterolateral, and mid-inferior wall of the left ventricle and mild hypokinesia in the apical region. There was also hypokinesia of the mid and api

[Rare cases of stress cardiomyopathy triggered by pulmonary embolism and reverse Takotsubo].

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo syndrome is a potentially fatal cardiomyopathy, characterized by systolic dysfunction with apical hypokinesia and basal hypercontractility in the absence of coronary lesions. It is triggered by physical or emotional stress and accounts for 2% of acute coronary syndromes; it is more common in older women. Its pathophysiology is not entirely clear, although the adrenergic hypothesis is the most accepted: a cardiotoxic effect is proposed due to beta-adrenergic stimulation, with an imbalance in oxygen supply and demand and dysregulation of calcium-dependent proteins. However,

[Segmental contractility and geometry of the left ventricle of patients with isolated lesions of the mitral valve].

Investigations showed that patients with "pure" stenosis of the left atrioventricular orifice as well as those with mitral insufficiency were characterized by left ventricular myocardial dysfunction expressed in a decrease of the index of left ventricular integral function--the ejection fraction and in change of geometry of the left ventricular cavity. Asynergy (hypokinesia) of the anterior wall segments and the posterior basal segment was revealed in patients with "pure" stenosis and "pure" mitral insufficiency. Hypokinesia in patients with primary mitral insufficiency was revealed in the ant

The sequence effect and gait festination in Parkinson disease: contributors to freezing of gait?

Festination and freezing of gait (FOG) are poorly understood gait disorders that cause disability and falls in people with Parkinson disease (PD). In PD, basal ganglia malfunction leads to motor set deficits (hypokinesia), while altered motor cue production leads to a sequence effect, whereby movements becomes progressively smaller as in festination. We suggest both factors may contribute to FOG. Disturbance of set maintenance by the basal ganglia in PD has previously been examined in gait, but limited systematic evaluation of the sequence effect exists. In this study, we investigated the step

Amplitude Distribution Characteristics of the Tongue, Lower Lip, and Jaw in Talkers With Dysarthria Due to Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE: This study sought to provide comprehensive insights into the size of articulatory movements (stroke amplitudes) in talkers with Parkinson's disease (PD) and determine the extent to which hypokinesia is related to perceived articulatory subsystem impairment severity. METHOD: Forty talkers with PD and 40 controls participated. Perceptual ratings of the articulatory and phonatory subsystem impairment severity were obtained for all talkers with PD. On the basis of these ratings, the PD group was divided into talkers with and without an articulatory impairment (18 PDdys+artic, 22 PDdys-ar

[Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: do not ignore cardiac involvement].

INTRODUCTION: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a thrombotic microangiopathy due to ADAMTS13 deficiency (a von Willebrand factor's metalloprotease) with multiple organs' involvement, one of which may be the heart. CASE REPORT: We report a 29-year-old woman who presented a TTP during her last trimester of pregnancy, under the features of a HELLP syndrome. After caesarean section, cardiac involvement was revealed by chest pain, ECG changes, antero-septal hypokinesia and troponin rise. Cardiac MRI found no large-vessel ischemic heart disease and confirmed hypokinesia. CONCLUSION: Whe

Impaired awareness of movement disorders in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: This study analyzed the presence of awareness of movement disorders (dyskinesias and hypokinesias) in 25 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and motor fluctuations (dyskinesias, wearing off, on-off fluctuations). Of the few studies that have dealt with this topic, none have analyzed the differences in the awareness of motor deficits by comparing the on and off states using motor scales and an extensive battery of tests to assess cognitive and behavioral functioning. METHODS: PD patients were compared on three different scales that we have devised to measure awareness of movemen

[Morphological study of early changes in rat bones during exposure to simulated weightlessness].

By histomorphometric methods tibial bones and lumbar vertebrae of rats exposed for 7 days to hypokinesia or head-down suspension were investigated. Both hypokinesia and suspension led to osteoporosis of the tibial metaphyseal spongiosa which was primarily induced by bone growth inhibition and probably by increased bone resorption. No signs of osteoporosis were seen in tibial diaphyses. In contrast to tibial bones, osteoporosis of the spongiosa of lumbar vertebrae was found only in hypokinetic rats. It is concluded that during exposure to simulated microgravity early signs of osteoporosis occur

Objective measurement versus clinician-based assessment for Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Although clinician-based assessment through standardized clinical rating scales is currently the gold standard for quantifying motor impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD), it is not without limitations, including intra- and inter-rater variability and a degree of approximation. There is increasing evidence supporting the use of objective motion analyses to complement clinician-based assessment. Objective measurement tools hold significant potential for improving the accuracy of clinical and research-based evaluations of patients. AREAS COVERED: The authors provide several examp

Cognitive-motor dysfunction after severe traumatic brain injury: A cerebral interhemispheric disconnection syndrome.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In most right-handed people, the left hemisphere is dominant for programming the temporal and spatial "how" (praxis) aspects of purposeful skilled movements, and the right hemisphere is dominant for control of the intentional "when" aspects of actions that mediate initiation, persistence, termination, and inhibition. Since the interhemispheric axons of the corpus callosum are especially susceptible to shearing from torsional forces during traumatic brain injury (TBI), the goal of this study was to learn whether participants with a history of severe traumatic brain injury

Bone tissue of hypokinetic rats: effects of 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol and varying phosphorous content in the diet.

Severe hypokinesia of rats given the diet with a ratio of Ca:P = 1:0.5-1:3 was accompanied by hypocalcemia, development of osteoporosis, and some intensification of renal calcinosis. The decrease of phosphorus consumption (Ca:P = 1:0.5-1:1) prevented a development of these changes in intact animals and increased bone mineralization in hypokinetic ones. Excessive phosphorus consumption (Ca:P = 1:3) produced hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and some osteoporotic changes in the bones of intact animals and intensified these changes with hypokinesia. Administration of 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol

Acute central administration of immepip, a histamine H3 receptor agonist, suppresses hypothalamic histamine release and elicits feeding behavior in rats.

Histamine suppresses feeding behavior via histamine H1 receptors in the hypothalamus. This study was performed to examine whether the acute reduction of histamine release in the hypothalamus caused by immepip, a histamine H3 agonist, modulates the feeding behavior of rats. Rats had a catheter implanted in the third cerebral ventricle (i3v) and were given central injections of phosphate-buffered-saline or immepip (100-300 pmol/rat). Following the i3v administration of immepip, the rats developed dose-dependent hypokinesia within 10 min of administration. Next to hypokinesia, the rats showed sig

Neural correlates of bradykinesia in Parkinson's disease: a kinematic and functional MRI study.

Bradykinesia is defined as a "complex" of motor alterations including decreased movement amplitude and/or speed and tendency to reduce them with movement repetition (sequence effect). This study aimed at investigating the neural and kinematic correlates of bradykinesia during hand-tapping in people with Parkinson's disease (pwPD) relative to healthy controls. Twenty-five pwPD and 25 age- and sex-matched healthy controls underwent brain functional MRI (fMRI) during a hand-tapping task: subjects alternatively opened and closed their right hand as fully and quickly as possible. Hand-tapping kinem

Sequence of mechanical, electrocardiographic and clinical effects of repeated coronary artery occlusion in human beings: echocardiographic observations during coronary angioplasty.

The direct manipulation of coronary blood flow to induce regional myocardial ischemia has been almost entirely limited to experimental animal models. Thus, the detection of ischemia-induced left ventricular dysfunction in human subjects has been generally limited to observations made under conditions of diagnostic loading or during spontaneous clinical events. Percutaneous coronary angioplasty requires repeated interruptions of coronary blood flow for periods as long as 1 minute. The resulting appearance of or increase in ischemia-produced changes in myocardial function were detected by two-di
