Isolated angiitis in the hypothalamus mimicking brain tumor.

A 64-year-old female presented with exaggerating somnolence without contributory medical and lifestyle histories. She was not aware of any preceding infection or headache. Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an isolated enhanced mass in the hypothalamus without meningeal enhancement. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid examinations showed no significant findings except for hypernatremia and hyperprolactinemia. She underwent an open biopsy via the interhemispheric route. Histological examination revealed marked perivascular lymphocytic aggregation with polyclonal immunostaining both for

Hypothesis: lifespan is regulated by chronomere DNA of the hypothalamus.

As the basis for the lifelong clock and as a primary cause of aging, a process of shortening of hypothetical perichromosomal DNA structures termed chronomeres is proposed in the CNS. The lifelong clock is regulated by the shortening of chronomere DNA in postmitotic neurons of the hypothalamus. Shortening of these DNA sequences occurs in humans on a monthly basis through a lunasensory system and is controlled by release of growth hormone discharged from the anterior pituitary directly into the hypothalamus via local blood vessels. In adults, this process is under control of the pineal gland. It

Lymphocytic hypophysitis with involvement of the cavernous sinus and hypothalamus.

Two cases of lymphocytic hypophysitis are reported, in which hypothalamic involvement causing diabetes insipidus was a prominent clinical feature. In one case, a man had clinical and radiological evidence of the involvement of the cavernous sinus. This represents the second reported case of a man with lymphocytic hypophysitis. A transsphenoidal biopsy established the diagnosis in both cases. Neither the involvement of the cavernous sinus nor permanent diabetes insipidus has been reported previously. A review of the literature is provided.

Effect of cranial irradiation on hypothalamus and pituitary functions.

Hypopituitarism can occur after cranial irradiation for tumors distant from the pituitary gland. Recent studies have suggested that this is hypothalamic in origin. Hypothalamic and pituitary functions were studied in 11 patients, 4 men and 7 women, 4.5 years or more after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinomas. The estimated average total dose was 5000 cGys for the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Except for 2 women with amenorrhea and 4 men with impotency, the patients did not have evident endocrine deficiency. Baseline hormone profiles revealed normal T4, T3 and cortisol levels, 6 with

Evidence for histaminergic arousal mechanisms in the hypothalamus of cat.

Polygraphic 23-hr recordings were carried out in 25 adult cats in order to examine the effects of both systemic and local injections of various histaminergic and antihistaminergic drugs on sleep-waking cycles. alpha-Fluoromethylhistidine (alpha-FMH), a specific inhibitor of histidine decarboxylase, when injected intraperitoneally at a dose of 20 mg/kg, induced a significant increase in deep slow wave sleep (S2) and a decrease in wakefulness (W), without modifying light slow wave sleep (S1) and paradoxical sleep (PS). Intraperitoneal injections of mepyramine (1 mg and 5 mg/kg), a well-known his

Cytoarchitectonic pattern of the hypothalamus in the cobra, Naja naja.

The distribution and cytoarchitectonic pattern of the magno- and parvocellular hypothalamic nuclei of the cobra. Naja naja, are described at the light-microscopic level. With respect to their tinctorial affinity to paraldehyde fuchsin (AF) as a representative of the Gomori-type of stains, the magnocellular neurons belong to the "AF-positive" and the parvocellular neurons to the "AF-negative" elements. In addition to the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei proper, two accessory aggregations of magnocellular neurons, the nucleus retrochiasmaticus and nucleus circularis, can be identified. Alth

The effect of medial hypothalamus lesions on pain control.

In the rat, discrete electrolytic lesions located in 6 different parts of the medial hypothalamus (MH) are shown to induce clearcut hyperalgesia. During a time limit of 14 days following the lesions, no other obvious deficits were noticed (in sensory and/or motor functions, affectivity towards conspecifics, food and water intake). Three nociceptive reactions (tail withdrawal, vocalization, vocalization after-discharge) were tested and their thresholds measured following electrical stimulation of the tail. The lesions aimed at the rostral part of the arcuate nucleus, as well as at ventromedial

The efferent connections of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus of the rat.

The efferent connections of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) of the rat have been examined using the autoradiographic method. Following injections of small amounts (0.4-2.0 muCi) of tritium labeled amino acids, fibers from the VMH can be traced forward through the periventricular region, the medial hypothalamus and the medial forebrain bundle to the preoptic and thalamic periventricular nuclei, to the medial and lateral preoptic areas, to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and to the ventral part of the lateral septum. Some labeled axons continue through the bed nucleus

Osmosensitive single neurones in the hypothalamus of unanaesthetized monkeys.

1. We recorded with tungsten micro-electrodes the activity of single neurones in the supraoptic nucleus (NSO) and adjacent regions of the hypothalamus while repeatedly injecting solutions of varying tonicity into the common carotid artery of trained, unanaesthetized monkeys who accepted the experimental restraints without anxiety.2. Intracarotid injections of mildly hypertonic solutions of sodium chloride produced a characteristic behavioural response during and immediately after injection: e.e.g. ;arousal,' lip and tongue smacking, chewing, irregular sniffing respiration and associated mildly

Hypothalamus as a conductor of the migraine prodrome: A narrative review.

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: This narrative review summarizes evidence implicating a role for the hypothalamus in the prodrome phase of a migraine attack. Prodrome is the earliest phase of the migraine attack. Understanding the migraine prodrome could lead to a better description of how migraine attacks are initiated and identification of targets for acute and preventive migraine treatment. The hypothalamus has been implicated in migraine prodrome via (1) localization of common prodrome symptoms to the hypothalamus; (2) identification of neurotransmitters, peptides, and hormones important in migrain

A comprehensive spatio-cellular map of the human hypothalamus.

The hypothalamus is a brain region that plays a key role in coordinating fundamental biological functions1. However, our understanding of the underlying cellular components and neurocircuitries have, until recently, emerged primarily from rodent studies2,3. Here we combine single-nucleus sequencing of 433,369 human hypothalamic cells with spatial transcriptomics, generating a comprehensive spatio-cellular transcriptional map of the hypothalamus, the 'HYPOMAP'. Although conservation of neuronal cell types between humans and mice, as based on transcriptomic identity, is generally high, there are

Global Profiling of Lysine Ubiquitylation in the Human Hypothalamus.

PURPOSE: Ubiquitylation is a vital post-translational modification involved in various biological processes, yet its role in the human hypothalamus remains largely unexplored. This study aims to profile the ubiquitinome of the human hypothalamus, uncovering the ubiquitylation landscape and its potential implications in hypothalamic function. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We employed LC‒MS/MS to analyze hypothalamic tissues from six healthy elderly individuals, focusing on identifying and characterizing ubiquitinated sites and proteins. Motif analysis, functional enrichment, and protein-protein interac

Hypothalamus and brainstem circuits in the regulation of glucose homeostasis.

The central nervous system (CNS) senses and integrates blood glucose status, regulating its levels through communication with peripheral organs. Since traditional wisdom holds that the hypothalamus primarily controls glucose homeostasis, the brainstem, although less studied, has been emerging as a key player in blood glucose metabolism. Although the brainstem is reciprocally wired with the hypothalamus, their interactions are crucial for glucose control. Here, we focus on classic discoveries and recent advancements of hypothalamic and brainstem nodes that regulate glucose homeostasis. Based on

ACE2, Circumventricular Organs and the Hypothalamus, and COVID-19.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus gains entry to cells by binding to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Since circumventricular organs and parts of the hypothalamus lack a blood-brain barrier, and immunohistochemical studies demonstrate that ACE2 is highly expressed in circumventricular organs which are intimately connected to the hypothalamus, and the hypothalamus itself, these might be easy entry points for SARS-CoV-2 into the brain via the circulation. High ACE2 protein expression is found in the subfornical organ, area postrema, and the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH). The subfor

Resting-state functional connectivity of the human hypothalamus.

Communication pathways of the hypothalamus with other brain regions and the periphery are critical to successfully control key physiological and psychological processes. With advanced functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques, it is possible to target hypothalamic function and infer discrete hypothalamus networks. Resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) is a promising tool to study the functional organization of the brain and may act as a marker of individual differences and dysfunctions. Based on recent fMRI findings, the hypothalamus is mostly connected to parts of the str
