Environmental and behavioral changes may influence the exposure of an Arctic apex predator to pathogens and contaminants.

Recent decline of sea ice habitat has coincided with increased use of land by polar bears (Ursus maritimus) from the southern Beaufort Sea (SB), which may alter the risks of exposure to pathogens and contaminants. We assayed blood samples from SB polar bears to assess prior exposure to the pathogens Brucella spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Coxiella burnetii, Francisella tularensis, and Neospora caninum, estimate concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and evaluate risk factors associated with exposure to pathogens and POPs. We found that seroprevalence of Brucella spp. and T. gondii a

Soil microbial diversity, succession, and greenhouse gas cycling across a Greenlandic glacial chronosequence.

Accelerated glacial retreat in Greenland drives increased development of glacial outwash plains. These newly exposed landscapes provide an opportunity to study microbial dynamics during soil development. We explore soil microbial diversity, community assembly, and biogeochemical cycling across the Kiattuut Sermiat glacial chronosequence (southern Greenland) via 16S rRNA gene amplicon analysis paired with microbial abundance, soil physicochemical parameters, and gas flux data. Microbial diversity varied with soil depth, with more acidic topsoils abundant in Cyanobacteriota and Armatimonadota ta

Mercury, methylmercury, and its fractions at the base of the trophic pyramid of the maritime Antarctic ecosystem of Admiralty Bay.

Mercury (Hg) pollution in polar regions is a critical environmental concern, exacerbated by glacier melting due to climate change. This study investigated the impact of glacial meltwater on total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), and various Hg fractions levels in seawater, suspended particulate matter, and microplankton in Admiralty Bay, Antarctica. Stable isotope analyses of carbon and nitrogen complement Hg measurements, providing insights into food web dynamics and pollutant transfer. The average THg concentration in water samples from creeks, which may represent runoff from melting gla

Giant stem tetrapod was apex predator in Gondwanan late Palaeozoic ice age.

Current hypotheses of early tetrapod evolution posit close ecological and biogeographic ties to the extensive coal-producing wetlands of the Carboniferous palaeoequator with rapid replacement of archaic tetrapod groups by relatives of modern amniotes and lissamphibians in the late Carboniferous (about 307 million years ago). These hypotheses draw on a tetrapod fossil record that is almost entirely restricted to palaeoequatorial Pangea (Laurussia)1,2. Here we describe a new giant stem tetrapod, Gaiasia jennyae, from high-palaeolatitude (about 55° S) early Permian-aged (about 280 million years a

Microbial mercury methylation in Antarctic sea ice.

Atmospheric deposition of mercury onto sea ice and circumpolar sea water provides mercury for microbial methylation, and contributes to the bioaccumulation of the potent neurotoxin methylmercury in the marine food web. Little is known about the abiotic and biotic controls on microbial mercury methylation in polar marine systems. However, mercury methylation is known to occur alongside photochemical and microbial mercury reduction and subsequent volatilization. Here, we combine mercury speciation measurements of total and methylated mercury with metagenomic analysis of whole-community microbial

Spatial distribution of mercury in southeastern Alaskan streams influenced by glaciers, wetlands, and salmon.

Southeastern Alaska is a remote coastal-maritime ecosystem that is experiencing increased deposition of mercury (Hg) as well as rapid glacier loss. Here we present the results of the first reported survey of total and methyl Hg (MeHg) concentrations in regional streams and biota. Overall, streams draining large wetland areas had higher Hg concentrations in water, mayflies, and juvenile salmon than those from glacially-influenced or recently deglaciated watersheds. Filtered MeHg was positively correlated with wetland abundance. Aqueous Hg occurred predominantly in the particulate fraction of gl

Past changes in Arctic terrestrial ecosystems, climate and UV radiation.

At the last glacial maximum, vast ice sheets covered many continental areas. The beds of some shallow seas were exposed thereby connecting previously separated landmasses. Although some areas were ice-free and supported a flora and fauna, mean annual temperatures were 10-13 degrees C colder than during the Holocene. Within a few millennia of the glacial maximum, deglaciation started, characterized by a series of climatic fluctuations between about 18,000 and 11,400 years ago. Following the general thermal maximum in the Holocene, there has been a modest overall cooling trend, superimposed upon

Late-summer hotspot of particulate organic matter and essential omega-3 fatty acids at the sea-ice bottom in the Central Arctic Ocean.

The Central Arctic Ocean is undergoing rapid environmental change associated with sea-ice retreat. The sea-ice bottom and adjacent under-ice waters are key zones for particulate organic matter (POM) accumulation and zooplankton foraging, yet the characteristics of POM across this interface remain unclear. Here, we analyzed particulate organic carbon (POC) and fatty-acid (FA) profiles of POM from these two habitats to quantify organic matter enrichment and characterize POM sources, omega-3 FA availability, and potential trophic significance. The sea-ice bottom represented an organic-matter hots

Stable Bacterial Cores and Patchy Eukaryotic Communities Shape the Summer Microbiomes of Patagonian Fjord Ecosystems Across Spatial, Functional and Temporal Gradients.

Patagonian fjord ecosystems are shaped by a combination of glacial, oceanographic and climatic factors that generate physical and chemical gradients. In these environments, microbial communities play essential roles in ecosystem functioning, with temporal and depth-related compositional shifts often linked to glacial meltwater input. In this study, we characterised microbial communities from southern Patagonia and the Drake Passage using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S and 18S rRNA genes across seven study areas. We found that bacterial and eukaryotic communities differed across the samp

Polar cod early life stage exposure to potential oil spills in the Arctic.

Arctic amplification of climate change is causing sea ice to retreat at unprecedented rates, potentially opening up large vulnerable Arctic areas for oil and gas exploration and new shipping routes. This rapid warming marginalizes sympagic species habitats making them more sensitive to other anthropogenic pressures. Here, we assess potential impacts of hypothetic oil spills from the northernmost licensed oil field Wisting and additional neighbouring spill sites in areas currently not open to oil exploitation on the key ice-associated Arctic fish species polar cod (Boreogadus saida). We do this

Trait-niche relationships accompany the increasing topological prominence of abundant bacteria along a glacial-lake chronosequence.

Accelerated glacial retreat driven by global warming has rapidly expanded glacial lakes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), creating natural laboratories for recording the successional trajectories of alpine aquatic ecosystems. However, how trophic succession during lake development drives microbial functional reorganization and reshapes core network positions remains unclear. Focusing on 15 glacial lakes on the QTP, this study integrated 16S rRNA gene sequencing, functional gene prediction, and topological network analysis to compare the adaptive trajectories of abundant and rare bacterial ta

Trace Element and Organohalogen Compound Contamination in the Supraglacial Debris of Italian Glaciers.

Glaciers represent unique and threatened ecosystems, which have accumulated and continue receiving diverse, potentially toxic, and environmental contaminants released by past and ongoing anthropic activities. The accelerated ablation and retreat of glaciers due to climate warming can consequently alter the fate of contaminants trapped within their ice or on their surface, leading to increased contaminant release through meltwaters. Thus, the monitoring of glacier contaminants is crucial for assessing the potential risk for proglacial ecosystems. The present study aimed at investigating the pre

Production of Molecular Iodine and Tri-iodide in the Frozen Solution of Iodide: Implication for Polar Atmosphere.

The chemistry of reactive halogens in the polar atmosphere plays important roles in ozone and mercury depletion events, oxidizing capacity, and dimethylsulfide oxidation to form cloud-condensation nuclei. Among halogen species, the sources and emission mechanisms of inorganic iodine compounds in the polar boundary layer remain unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the production of tri-iodide (I3(-)) via iodide oxidation, which is negligible in aqueous solution, is significantly accelerated in frozen solution, both in the presence and the absence of solar irradiation. Field experiments carried ou

Determination of monomethylmercury and dimethylmercury in the Arctic marine boundary layer.

Our understanding of the biogeochemical cycling of monomethylmercury (MMHg) in the Arctic is incomplete because atmospheric sources and sinks of MMHg are still unclear. We sampled air in the Canadian Arctic marine boundary layer to quantify, for the first time, atmospheric concentrations of methylated Hg species (both MMHg and dimethylmercury (DMHg)), and, estimate the importance of atmospheric deposition as a source of MMHg to Arctic land- and sea-scapes. Overall atmospheric MMHg and DMHg concentrations (mean ± SD) were 2.9 ± 3.6 and 3.8 ± 3.1 (n = 37) pg m(-3), respectively. Concentrations o

Phylogeography of bivalve Cyclina sinensis: testing the historical glaciations and Changjiang River outflow hypotheses in northwestern Pacific.

BACKGROUND: The marginal seas of northwestern Pacific are characterized by unique topography and intricate hydrology. Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain genetic patterns of marine species inhabiting the region: the historical glaciations hypothesis suggests population genetic divergence between sea basins, whereas the Changjiang River outflow hypothesis suggests genetic break in line with the Changjiang Estuary. Here the phylogeography of bivalve Cyclina sinensis was investigated to test the validity of these two hypotheses for intertidal species in three marginal seas-the East China

Intense storms increase global ice area.

Earth's energy balance is strongly modulated by sea ice cover. Cyclones can impact sea ice extent by amplifying wave activity, promoting ice breakup, advecting heat and moisture, and enhancing sea ice drift. Due to the range of processes involved, the net effect of cyclones on global ice area has yet to be quantified. Here we analyze two decades of intense cyclones that interact with the global marginal ice zone, showing that storms enhance the seasonal ice growth and decay cycle in both hemispheres. Cyclones intensify equatorward winds and ice advection within a cooling ocean during the cold

Foraging behavior and sea ice-dependent factors affecting the bioaccumulation of mercury in Antarctic coastal waters.

To elucidate the potential risks of the toxic pollutant mercury (Hg) in polar waters, the study of accumulated Hg in fish is compelling for understanding the cycling and fate of Hg on a regional scale in Antarctica. Herein, the Hg isotopic compositions of Antarctic cod Notothenia coriiceps were assessed in skeletal muscle, liver, and heart tissues to distinguish the differences in Hg accumulation in isolated coastal environments of the eastern (Chinese Zhongshan Station, ZSS) and the antipode western Antarctica (Chinese Great Wall Station, GWS), which are separated by over 4000 km. Differences

Impact of Glaciers on Trophic Dynamics and Polyunsaturated Fat Accumulation in Southern Greenland Fjord Ecosystems.

The primary production of fjords across the Arctic and Subarctic is undergoing significant transformations due to the climatically driven retreat of glaciers and ice sheets. However, the implications of these changes for upper trophic levels remain largely unknown. In this study, we employ both bulk and compound-specific stable isotope analyses to investigate how shifts at the base of fjord food webs impact the carbon and energy sources of consumers. Focusing on two rapidly changing fjords in Southern Greenland, we used the migratory Arctic char as an indicator species, sampling populations al

Autotrophy to Heterotrophy: Shift in Bacterial Functions During the Melt Season in Antarctic Cryoconite Holes.

Microbes residing in cryoconite holes (debris, water, and nutrient-rich ecosystems) on the glacier surface actively participate in carbon and nutrient cycling. Not much is known about how these communities and their functions change during the summer melt-season when intense ablation and runoff alter the influx and outflux of nutrients and microbes. Here, we use high-throughput-amplicon sequencing, predictive metabolic tools and Phenotype MicroArray techniques to track changes in bacterial communities and functions in cryoconite holes in a coastal Antarctic site and the surrounding fjord, duri

Warming increases methylmercury production in an Arctic soil.

Rapid temperature rise in Arctic permafrost impacts not only the degradation of stored soil organic carbon (SOC) and climate feedback, but also the production and bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) toxin that can endanger humans, as well as wildlife in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Currently little is known concerning the effects of rapid permafrost thaw on microbial methylation and how SOC degradation is coupled to MeHg biosynthesis. Here we describe the effects of warming on MeHg production in an Arctic soil during an 8-month anoxic incubation experiment. Net MeHg production incre
