[The role of caregivers in crisis day treatment programs for adolescents: Limits in the service of care].

Program 10-15 is a crisis day hospital for adolescents. Its operations are inspired by institutional psychiatry and the systemic approach. This article describes the use of institutional, educational, and relational boundaries in their role as a source of containment and for therapeutic purposes. Through the presentation of a clinical case study, it illustrates the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork in using boundaries as a therapeutic tool. Opportunities for reflection and sharing within the team are described as necessary to prevent the blurring of professional identities and burnout.

Training clinicians to be organizers: Expanding professional identities through a year-long Climate Health Organizing Fellowship.

The climate crisis and its harmful effects on human health are staggering. It is motivating clinicians to transform their scope of practice. Physicians and other clinicians are on the front lines of managing a growing surge of illness and injury directly caused by increasingly extreme temperatures, weather, and ecological transformation. But the joint institutional constraints of clinician socialization through training and the labor conditions of health care delivery tend to obfuscate and disincentivize the array of possible practical strategies for meaningful, collective intervention in the

Sex-Positive HIV Prevention Messages: A Case Study From the Early Years of the Epidemic.

Beginning with the emergence of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the early 1980s, community-led lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health organizations created prevention materials that affirmed and celebrated gay identity, positing safer sex as a radical method of keeping their communities healthy and liberated past the onset of the virus. Often prioritizing pleasure and featuring erotic imagery, these strengths-based prevention messages implied that community members shared a collective responsibility to care for each other and stop the spread of HIV. Using archival public health materials from

Life experiences and the decision to become a mental patient.

This research focuses upon life events influencing the decision to adopt or reject the mental patient role. Studied were 30 mental health center patients who defined themselves as mentally ill and aggressively sought treatment. These were contrasted with 21 persons who consistently denied that they were mentally disordered, and persistently resisted the treatment forced upon them. Patients in both groups had been exposed to the mental health system on the average of 7 years each. Findings showed that those identifying with the mental patient role, in contrast to those resisting it, were more l

Contributing to the reproducibility crisis in Psychology: The role of statistical software choice on factor analysis.

A potentially overlooked contributor to the reproducibility crisis in psychology is the choice of statistical application software used for factor analysis. Although the open science movement promotes transparency by advocating for open access to data and statistical methods, this approach alone is insufficient to address the reproducibility crisis. It is commonly assumed that different statistical software applications produce equivalent results when conducting the same statistical analysis. However, this is not necessarily the case. Statistical programs often yield disparate outcomes, even w

Medical students' perceptions and coping strategies during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic: studies, clinical implication, and professional identity.

BACKGROUND: The unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic during spring 2020 has disrupted medical education worldwide. The University of Geneva decided to shift on-site classwork to online learning; many exams were transformed from summative to formative evaluations and most clinical activities were suspended. We aimed to investigate the perceived impact of those adaptations by the students at the Faculty of Medicine. METHODS: We sent an online self-administered survey to medical students from years 2 to 6 of the University of Geneva, three months after the beginning of the pandemic. The survey exp

Creating a language for 'spiritual pain' through research: a beginning.

The findings presented in this discussion seek to make a contribution to fostering an appreciation of the importance of research on spirituality, a previously neglected dimension of health care. Qualitative research methodology based on open-ended interviews with 12 survivors of haematological malignancies was used. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed using the NUD*IST computer package. The preliminary findings from the study indicate a need for the development of a new language for articulating spirituality. The present discussion is an introductory attempt to b

Myth, Meaning, and Mental Health: Rollo May's Existential Psychology in Dialogue with Contemporary Religion and Health Research.

The contemporary mental health crisis is increasingly described in terms of meaninglessness, fragmentation of identity, and spiritual disorientation. While empirical research in religion and health has demonstrated consistent associations between religiosity, spirituality, and psychological well-being, the underlying symbolic and narrative mechanisms that sustain these associations remain insufficiently theorized. This article revisits Rollo May's concept of myth as a foundational structure of psychological integration and examines its relevance for contemporary religion and health scholarship

Searching the Silver trail: Charles van Onselen, Joe Silver and Jack the Ripper.

OBJECTIVE: South African historian Charles van Onselen's discovery of the identity of Jack the Ripper is described. The author was consulted by van Onselen during the writing of the latter's book, "The Fox and the Flies: Joe Silver, Racketeer and Psychopath", which suggested the identity of Jack the Ripper and was first published earlier this year. CONCLUSIONS: van Onselen's investigations into the life of Joe Silver, a Polish Jewish brothel owner in the early days of Johannesburg, revealed an extraordinary criminal career starting in London and covering the Atlantic zone before ending on the

[Female genital mutilation meets Swedish health care. Female genital mutilation is one of many forms of discrimination of women in the world].

About 27,000 women from countries in which female genital mutilation (FGM) is a common practice are presently living in Sweden. This means that FGM is a phenomenon that directly affects the Swedish health care system. Knowledge and understanding of the background, meaning and consequences of FGM are a prerequisite for effective prevention, proper clinical handling and supportive reception of the women. To avoid a stigmatizing reception it is also important to understand the situation of genitally mutilated women, and to become aware of the identity crisis many of them experience when they come

Dissociative amnesia with fugue following a suicide attempt: a rare clinical intersection of identity loss and suicidal ambivalence: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative amnesia with dissociative fugue is a rare dissociative disorder characterized by abrupt loss of autobiographical memory and disruption of personal identity, most often emerging in the context of severe psychological stress. Although dissociative phenomena are increasingly recognized in individuals with suicidal behavior, the development of fugue states in the immediate aftermath of a suicide attempt remains rarely documented and poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 50-year-old man with no documented psychi

Secondary thrombocytopenia following phenobarbital treatments in a rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta).

A rare adverse reaction due to phenobarbital (10 mg/kg/day for 11 days) developed in a rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta). Clinical signs and measured hematological parameters correlated closely with descriptions of thrombocytopenia. Following cessation of phenobarbital, the monkey recovered within 11 days. Five months after initial thrombocytopenia, the monkey was challenged again with phenobarbital (10 mg/kg/day for 11 days). Appearance and progression of clinical signs were identical to the initial crisis.

Grandparents in 3D: Unpacking personal, parental, and grandparental dimensions in the immediate aftermath of an acute trauma.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine how Israeli grandparents of young grandchildren navigated personal, parental, and grandparental roles during the first month following the October 7, 2023, terror attacks and the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. Grandparents hold a central yet understudied role in family systems during collective trauma, but little attention has been paid to grandparents' layered identities and coping strategies. METHOD: This is a qualitative study with 16 grandmothers and five grandfathers (40-73 years old) based on semistructured in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis

Personality traits as correlates of suicide attempts and suicidal ideation in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Adults in their twenties appear to be at high risk for suicidal behaviors (SBs) and there is substantial evidence suggesting that certain personality traits may increase individual vulnerability to suicide. METHOD: We investigated relationships of personality traits with two SBs in a cohort (n=1140) of 21- to 24-year-old adults, representative of the general population of Quebec. Subjects were assessed using a series of structured diagnostic and personality trait questionnaires. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to identify personality trait correlates of sui

Treatment of an identity-diffused adolescent on an acute inpatient unit.

The case of an adolescent hospitalized on an Acute Inpatient Unit following a suicide attempt is presented. Aspects of the patient's clinical presentation, specifically highly variable behaviors that eventuated in three recurring personality constellations, are linked to the youth's history of physical abuse. Interpretations of the boy's behaviors and treatment strategies are illustrated for consideration in work with other youth suffering histories of abuse.

The mass murderer history: modern classifications, sociodemographic and psychopathological characteristics, suicidal dimensions, and media contagion of mass murders.

Multicide and other mass killings are sufficiently dramatic to excite great interest from clinicians, criminologists and behavioral scientists. This paper revisits the history of the mass murderer, an entity that has progressively distinguished itself from the serial killer. The functional difference between mass and serial homicide is quite obvious, particularly in setting, time, victim status and modus operandi. Classification of these acts requires a number of parameters. The causes of mass murders are multiple and complex: although they rarely seem to be related to psychotic mental patholo
