Past and current therapies for recurrent mucocutaneous herpes simplex infections are reviewed. At present, no topical or systemic therapy has been proved safe and effective in scientific double-blind studies. Recent treatment with flexible collodion is discussed.

Non-genital herpes simplex virus in immunocompetent hosts causes a variety of primary infections--gingivostomatitis, keratoconjunctivitis, herpetic whitlow, and encephalomyelitis. Recurrent infections with orolabialis are very common, but are usually mild and self-limiting. An isolation technique for Chlamydia trachomatis using McCoy cells is described. In contrast to earlier techniques employing such cells, no pretreatment of the cells was used. Thirteen cases of anorectal Herpesivirus hominis infection in male homosexuals are described. Symptoms included pruitus ani in 11 cases, while 7 noticed intense and pain. Change of bowel habits and anal discharge were not presenting symptoms in the majority. None had generalized complications. Inguinal lymphadenopathy, a vesicular eruption, and superficial ulceration around the anal margin were commonly found. Some developed vesicular spread to the natal cleft.
