La Crosse (LAC) virus (California encephalitis serogroup) was identified as the etiologic agent of disease in 61 cases of California encephalitis (CE) that occurred in Illinois between 1976 and 1980. This group represented 54% of all 114 laboratory-diagnosed cases of CE between 1966 and 1980. Key epidemiologic observations included: 88% of the 61 cases had onset in July, August, or September; the 5- to 9-year-old age group represented 48% of the cases; the male:female sex ratio was 2:1; 97% of the cases occurred in the northern half of the state; and 61% of the cases occurred in Peoria County.

BACKGROUND: Medetomidine has recently emerged as an adulterant in street-level opioids and stimulants in North America, complicating opioid overdose presentations and resisting reversal with naloxone. Medetomidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist used in veterinary medicine as an anesthetic, analgesic, anxiolytic, and muscle relaxant and is not approved for human use by the Food and Drug Administration. Medetomidine's pharmacological profile resembles xylazine, another medication of the same class, but demonstrates higher potency and longer sedative effects in canine models.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Noncitizen, undocumented patients with kidney failure have few treatment options in many states, although Illinois allows for patients to receive a transplant regardless of citizenship status. In late summer and fall 1997, Aedes albopictus mosquitoes were found in Peoria, Illinois, a long recognized focus of La Crosse virus transmission. Larvae were found in tires and other artificial containers, biting adults were recovered, and eggs were collected in oviposition traps within a 25-ha area. One chipmunk trapped < 0.25 km from the infested area tested positive for neutralizing antibodies against La Crosse virus.

Cryptococcus gattii is a fungal pathogen endemic in tropical and subtropical regions. Isolated cases and outbreaks have been reported in areas of North America and Europe, expanding the distribution pattern beyond warmer regions. Temporal changes in the abundance Culex restuans and Culex pipiens were monitored in east-central Illinois for over a decade using infusion-baited oviposition traps.
