Pheromones and other social odor cues convey rich information among rodents. Social investigation is described as a key element in olfactory communication, which involves motivated approaches to conspecifics and other socially relevant stimuli. This behavior is activated by the detection of social cues to gather information about conspecifics for subsequent strategies such as avoidance or further approach, thereby determining the extent and nature of physical contact that ensues. This feature indicates a useful way for describing the process of social communication in distance-based manner. In

BACKGROUND: Latinos in the United States have been identified as a high-risk group for depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. HIV/AIDS has disproportionately impacted Latinos. Review findings suggest that HIV-risk behaviors among persons with severe mental illness (SMI) are influenced by a multitude of factors including psychiatric illness, cognitive-behavioral factors, substance use, childhood abuse, and social relationships.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of psychiatric and social correlates of HIV sexual risk behavior in Puerto Rican women with SMI.
METHODS: Data collected longitudin

In addition to posing a risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), Type A behavior has been suggested as a risk factor for non-CHD illness. Past evidence, however, has relied chiefly on retrospective studies of self-reported illness that failed to control for the potentially confounding effects of negative affectivity. The present investigation was an 18-month prospective study of Type A behavior and medical records of illness in which chronic negative affectivity was also assessed. Negative affectivity was associated with retrospective self-reported illness, but only Type A, as measured by the Je

In one of the largest, most comprehensive studies on borderline personality disorder (BPD) to date, this article places into context associations between this diagnosis and (1) 16 different psychiatric disorders, (2) eight somatic illnesses, and (3) six trauma and adverse behaviors, e.g., violent crime victimization and self-harm. Second, it examines the sex differences in individuals with BPD and their siblings. A total of 1,969,839 Swedish individuals were identified from national registers. Cumulative incidence with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was evaluated after 5 years of follow-up from

Emerging adults (18-25 years) experience the highest prevalence of mental illness, including anxiety and depression, affecting more than 11 million individuals in the United States. Traditional treatment approaches, such as psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, may not fully address the complex and interrelated risk factors unique to emerging adults. Targeting lifestyle behaviors, including diet, sleep, physical activity, and substance use, has emerged as a promising adjunctive strategy for the prevention and treatment of mental illness. Growing evidence suggests that these behaviors frequently c

Gambling disorder (GD) is a behavioral addiction that causes serious harm to individuals' mental health and social functioning. This study aimed to explore whether gamblers' illness representations (IR) for GD are related to disordered and/or controlled patterns of gambling under the framework of commonsense model of self-regulation (CSM). Based on CSM, different facets of IR do not exist in isolation but together form a total illness schema; we hence used a person-centered analysis method, latent profile analysis (LPA), to classify gamblers by their overall IR for GD (including consequences,

BACKGROUND: Health anxiety (HA) is defined as the objectively unfounded fear or conviction of suffering from a severe illness. Predominant attention allocation to illness-related information is regarded as a central process in the development and maintenance of HA, yet little is known about the neuronal correlates of this attentional bias.
METHODS: An emotional Stroop task with body symptom, illness, and neutral words was employed to elicit emotional interference in healthy participants with high (HA+, n = 12) and low (HA-, n = 12) HA during functional magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence from alcohol and trauma studies suggests that disasters are associated with increases in the consumption of alcohol. The Great East Japan Earthquake and the associated nuclear disaster have continued to affect the mental health of evacuees from Fukushima. This study aimed to extend these findings by examining the relationship between drinking behaviors and the risk of mental illness after the compound disaster.
METHODS: We conducted the Mental Health and Lifestyle Survey with 56,543 evacuees. Kessler's K6 was used to assess the risk of mental illness, and logistic

BACKGROUND: Individuals, who suffer from severe mental illnesses (SMI), such as bipolar disorder (BD), schizophrenia (SCZ), and major depressive disorder (MDD), are more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior. A severe mental illness can lead to a decrease in impulse control, a reduction in cognitive function and memory, and a psychosocial impairment that increases risky sexual behavior. Risky sexual behavior (RSB) can lead to health problems such as sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS, early pregnancy, and unplanned pregnancies. The purpose of this systematic review and met

Objective: Serious mental illness (SMI; e.g. schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, bipolar disorder, severe major depressive disorder, and psychotic disorders) and Latino ethnicity can produce a compounded health disparity, placing individuals at particularly high risk for excess morbidity and premature mortality. In this study we sought to identify the role of SMI in motivation, participation, and adoption of health behavior change among overweight Latino adults. Design: Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 overweight Latinos with SMI who were
