Representational demands in mothers' talk to preschool children in two contexts: picture book reading and a modelling task.

Shared book reading is considered to be an influential factor in language and literacy development and has been associated with more complex and demanding forms of tutorial language use. The present study seeks to examine mothers' discourse in joint picture book reading in terms of the level of representational demand which it places on the child, that is the extent to which it requires the child to engage in abstract thought. This was compared with the language used in another interactive, but more product oriented task, modelling a clown using play-doh. Twenty-four mother child dyads (in whi

Sensitive period for sensorimotor integration during vocal motor learning.

Sensory experience during sensitive periods in development may direct the organization of neural substrates, thereby permanently influencing subsequent adult behavior. We report a sensitive period during the imitative motor learning phase of sensorimotor integration in birdsong development. By temporarily and reversibly blocking efference to the vocal muscles, we disrupted vocal motor practice during selected stages of song development. Motor disruption during prolonged periods early in development, which allows recovery of vocal control prior to the onset of adult song, has no effect on adult

Is it a Match? Yawn Contagion and Smile Mimicry in Toddlers.

Automatic behavioral matching includes Rapid Facial Mimicry (RFM) and Yawn Contagion (YC) that occur when the facial expression of an individual acts as a 'mirror social releaser' and induces the same facial expression in the observer (within 1 s for RFM, and minutes for YC). Motor replication has been linked to coordination and emotional contagion, a basic form of empathy. We investigated the presence and modulating factors of Rapid Smile Mimicry (RSM) and YC in infants/toddlers from 10 to 36 months at the nursery 'Melis' (Turin, Italy). In February-May 2022, we gathered audio and/or video of

Able-bodied wild chimpanzees imitate a motor procedure used by a disabled individual to overcome handicap.

Chimpanzee culture has generated intense recent interest, fueled by the technical complexity of chimpanzee tool-using traditions; yet it is seriously doubted whether chimpanzees are able to learn motor procedures by imitation under natural conditions. Here we take advantage of an unusual chimpanzee population as a 'natural experiment' to identify evidence for imitative learning of this kind in wild chimpanzees. The Sonso chimpanzee community has suffered from high levels of snare injury and now has several manually disabled members. Adult male Tinka, with near-total paralysis of both hands, co

Joint attention ability in children with autistic spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: joint attention in children with autistic spectrum disorders. AIM: to evaluate joint attention ability in subjects with autistic spectrum disorders in different contexts and with different interlocutors. METHOD: twenty subjects with ages between four and twelve years, diagnosed with autism or asperger syndrome (DSM-IV-TR, 2002) by a multidisciplinary team, with no associated disorders, and who were enrolled in language therapy for at least six months were assessed. The Symbolic Maturity Assessment Test was used to evaluate joint attention behaviors. An adaptation that included th

Infant Imitation and Rhythmic Movement in Response to Music and Speech.

Humans move our bodies to rhythms. This behavior is developmentally precocious: infants and young children are motivated to move by music, and most caregivers report that their infants produce dance-like movements within the first year of life. However, the mechanisms shaping early dance are poorly understood. One potential influence on early dance is observational learning. There is substantial evidence that infants experience music as social, and that infants imitate social partners. In the present study, I asked whether infants imitated more in musical contexts compared to nonmusical contex

Single-case disconnectome lesion-symptom mapping: Identifying two subtypes of limb apraxia.

Influential theories of skilled action posit that distinct cognitive mechanisms and neuroanatomic substrates support meaningless gesture imitation and tool use pantomiming, and poor performance on these tasks are hallmarks of limb apraxia. Yet prior research has primarily investigated brain-behavior relations at the group level; thus, it is unclear whether we can identify individuals with isolated impairments in meaningless gesture imitation or tool use pantomiming whose performance is associated with a distinct neuroanatomic lesion profile. The goal of this study was to test the hypothesis th

The play fever: individual and group factors influence the contagion of play behaviour within social hominid groups.

Via the perception-action model and mirror neuron system, individuals replicate others' behaviour (behavioural/social contagion) and reduce prediction errors on other behaviours. Among contagious behaviours, play offers a safe context for cooperation, competition and tolerance. Thus, play contagion is interesting to better understand the evolution of social dynamics in many non-primates and primates, including humans. To our knowledge, no study has examined play contagion across social hominids nor analysed individual/group features to identify common modulators. In 2022-2025, we gathered all-

Using a bad tool with good intention: young children's imitation of adults' questionable choices.

We present three studies exploring 2- to 4-year-olds' imitation on witnessing a model whose questionable tool use choices suggested her untrustworthiness. In Study 1, children observed the model accidentally select a physically optimal tool for a task and then intentionally reject it for one that was functionally nonaffordant. When asked to perform the task for her, children at all ages ignored the model's intentional cues and selected the optimal tool. Study 2 found that when the model's nonaffordant tool choice was emphasized by claims about its design, 3-year-olds increased imitation. They

Neuropsychological basis of impaired gesture imitations in patients with Alzheimer's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to examine the neuropsychological factors that may be related to the impaired gesture imitations in patients with dementia. METHODS: The imitation of unilateral finger and bimanual gestures was evaluated in 162 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 103 patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). The relationships of gesture imitation performance to global cognition, semantic fluency, phonemic fluency, figure copying, clock drawing, and trail-making test part A (TMT-A) scores were examined. RESULTS: Mean scores for unilateral finger imitation we

A Comprehensive Artificial Sweat Study for Quantitation of Nickel and Other Inorganic Elements Released from Imitation Earrings Purchased in Istanbul Market.

Element sensitization is frequent cause of allergic contact dermatitis, and Ni is the main reason for this condition owing to daily use of different Ni-containing items. European Union established a limit of 0.2 μg/cm2/week Ni release for the items by the Ni Directive in 2004. The aim of this study was to determine the amount of element release of imitation earrings sold in different points of Istanbul with different prices and consider the element release levels including 29 trace and toxic elements. After calculation of released nickel amounts, 31.80% of earrings (71 of 223) were observed ov

Deficits in movement planning and intrinsic coordinate control in ideomotor apraxia.

Two central issues in the field of motor control are the coordinate frame in which movements are controlled and the distinction between movement planning and online correction. In this study we used these issues to frame several hypotheses about the deficits underlying ideomotor apraxia (IMA). In particular, we examined whether ideomotor apraxics exhibited (1) deficits in movement control in intrinsic (body relative) coordinates with better control in extrinsic (workspace relative) coordinates, (2) deficits in movement planning that are compensated for by an overreliance on online correction,

Imitation of complex whole-body sequence in profoundly hearing-impaired adolescents.

Many studies have identified specific visual advantages in deaf individuals. However, few studies have linked these advantages to motor learning. This study aimed to compare the differences in movement and learning processes between profoundly hearing-impaired (HI) and normal-hearing (NH) adolescents by capturing motions that imitate complex whole-body sequences. To analyze multiple parameters simultaneously in a time series and evaluate their similarity to the reference, we used a deep-learning strategy with an autoencoder for anomaly detection. In this study, anomaly detection indicated the

Construction of a Pig Alveolar Cleft Model in Imitation of Cleft Lip and Palate Congenital Deformity.

Alveolar cleft repair is a key step in multiple disciplinary treatment for patients with cleft lip/and palate. Although autologous bone grafting has been used worldwide over the past half century, alternative advanced techniques, such as the use of bone substitutes and guided tissue regeneration, have shown their great potentials and have been recommended by a growing number of physicians and surgeons. The employment of new therapeutic approaches and devices in clinical routine requires tremendous experimental efforts and appropriate animal models with similar sizes and sites of deformity to t

Vocal imitations and production learning by Australian musk ducks (Biziura lobata).

Acquiring vocalizations by learning them from other individuals is only known from a limited number of animal groups. For birds, oscine and some suboscine songbirds, parrots and hummingbirds demonstrate this ability. Here, we provide evidence for vocal learning in a member of a basal clade of the avian phylogeny: the Australian musk duck (Biziura lobata). A hand-reared individual imitated a slamming door and a human voice, and a female-reared individual imitated Pacific black duck quacks. These sounds have been described before, but were never analysed in any detail and went so far unnoticed b

100 years after Liepmann-Lesion correlates of diminished selection and application of familiar versus novel tools.

100 years ago, Liepmann highlighted the role of left ventro-dorsal lesions for impairments in conceptual (rather ventral) and motor (more dorsal) related aspects of apraxia. Many studies thereafter attributed to an extended left fronto-temporo-parietal network. Yet, to date there are only few studies that looked at apraxic performance in the selection and application of familiar versus novel tools. In the current study we applied modern voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) to analyze neural correlates of impaired selection and application of familiar versus novel tools. 58 left (LBD) and

Activating the motor system through action observation: is this an efficient approach in adults and children?

Observing an action performed by another person to learn a new movement is a frequent experience in adult daily life, such as in sports. However, it is an especially common circumstance during the development of motor skills in childhood. Studies on healthy humans indicate that action observation induces a facilitation in the observer's motor system. This effect is supported by an action-perception matching mechanism available both in adults and in children. Because of the simplicity of action observation, it has been proposed to apply this method in clinical contexts. After a brief, non-exhau
