Levels of circulating immune complexes (CICs) in 59 patients with Meniere's disease and total serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels in a subgroup of 42 of the 59 were determined quantitatively for possible abnormalities of humoral immunity. We have used the radioallergosorbent test (RAST) to determine IgE antibodies specific to wheat flour proteins in the sera of seven groups of patients. In some cases rye-specific IgE was also determined. Wheat and rye RAST scores showed a good correlation, presumably due to cross-reactions. We report the case of an adolescent girl with frequent hospital admissions for severe eczematous skin rashes with recurrent epistaxis and chest infections. The paper presents the results of a study of the significance of IgE in the diagnosis of echinococciasis. Preoperative examinations of patients with showed the increased serum concentrations of IgE. The decreased concentration of IgE was recorded on postoperative day 20. Enzyme immunoassay used to measure serum IgE concentrations is a sensitive technique for the diagnosis of hepatic echinococciasis and for the prognosis of allergic reactions and diseases.
