Evolutionary game in an androdioecious population: Coupling of outcrossing and male production.

Androdioecy, the coexistence of hermaphrodites and males, is very rare in vertebrates but occurs in mangrove killifish living in ephemeral or unstable habitats. Hermaphrodites reproduce both by outcrossing with males and by selfing. Outbreeding is advantageous because of inbreeding depression, but it requires encounters with males. The advantages of a propensity for outcrossing among hermaphrodites and the production of males affect each other very strongly. To study the evolutionary coupling of these two aspects, we here analyze a simple evolutionary game for a population composed of three ph

Study on the Genetic Diversity Characteristics of the Endemic Plant Rhododendron bailiense in Guizhou, China Based on SNP Molecular Markers.

Rhododendron bailiense was identified as a new species in 2013, with approximately 150 individuals existing globally, found only in Dafang County and Panzhou City, Guizhou Province, China. Despite its discovery, the genetic diversity and population structure of this species remain poorly understood, hindering efforts to collect and conserve wild germplasm resources. In this study, double digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing was conducted on 26 samples from two populations of R. bailiense to identify single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci. Using these data, the research explores

The microbiome of wild and mass-reared new world screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax.

Insect population control through continual releases of large numbers of sterile insects, called sterile insect technique (SIT), is only possible if one can mass-rear large quantities of healthy insects. Adaptation of insect stocks to rearing conditions and artificial feeding systems can have a multitude of negative effects such as inbreeding depression, reduced compatibility with wild strains, unintentional selection for traits that lower fitness after release, and an altered microbiome. Changes to insect microbiomes can have many effects on insects ranging from a reduction in sex pheromones

Polyploidy influences sexual system and mating patterns in the moss Atrichum undulatum sensu lato.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Evolutionary transitions between separate and combined sexes have frequently occurred across various plant lineages. In mosses, which are haploid-dominant, evolutionary transitions from separate to combined sexes are often associated with genome doubling. Polyploidy and hermaphroditism have strong effects on the inbreeding depression of a population, and are subsequently predicted to affect the mating system. METHODS: We tested the association between ploidy (haploid, diploid or triploid gametophytes) and mating system in 21 populations of Atrichum undulatum sensu lato, w

Diverged Populations Admixture Bolsters Genetic Diversity of a New Island Dibbler (Parantechinus apicalis) Population, but Does Not Prevent Subsequent Loss of Genetic Variation.

Translocating individuals from multiple source populations is one way to bolster genetic variation and avoid inbreeding in newly established populations. However, mixing isolated populations, especially from islands, can potentially lead to outbreeding depression and/or assortative mating, which may limit interbreeding between source populations. Here, we investigated genetic consequences of mixing individuals from two island populations of the dibbler (Parantechinus apicalis) in an island translocation. Despite a high level of genetic divergence between the source populations (F ST ranges 0.3

Population genomics of the muskox' resilience in the near absence of genetic variation.

Genomic studies of species threatened by extinction are providing crucial information about evolutionary mechanisms and genetic consequences of population declines and bottlenecks. However, to understand how species avoid the extinction vortex, insights can be drawn by studying species that thrive despite past declines. Here, we studied the population genomics of the muskox (Ovibos moschatus), an Ice Age relict that was at the brink of extinction for thousands of years at the end of the Pleistocene yet appears to be thriving today. We analysed 108 whole genomes, including present-day individua

Hakuna Nematoda: genetic and phenotypic diversity in African isolates of Caenorhabditis elegans and C. briggsae.

Caenorhabditis elegans and C. briggsae have many parallels in terms of morphology, life history and breeding system. Both species also share similar low levels of molecular diversity, although the global sampling of natural populations has been limited and geographically biased. In this study, we describe the first cultured isolates of C. elegans and C. briggsae from sub-Saharan Africa. We characterize these samples for patterns of nucleotide polymorphism and vulva precursor cell lineage, and conduct a series of hybrid crosses in C. briggsae to test for genetic incompatibilities. Effects of population size and selection intensity on correlated responses to selection for postweaning gain in mice.

Correlated responses to selection for postweaning gain in mice were studied to determine the influence of population size and selection intensity. Correlated traits measured were three-, six- and eight-week body weights, litter size, twelve-day litter weight, proportion infertile matings and two indexes of reproductive performance. In general, the results agreed with observations made on direct response: correlated responses in the body weight traits and litter size increased as (1) selection intensity increased and (2) effective population size increased. Correlated responses in the body weig

Comparative reproductive biology and pollinator specificity among sympatric Gomesa (Orchidaceae: Oncidiinae).

The incredible pollination mechanisms displayed by orchid flowers has inspired biologists over the centuries. Based on the intriguing flower structures, the relationship among orchid species and their pollinators has been frequently regarded as very specialised. Given that visits on flowers pollinated by oil-collecting bees are regularly rare, and in Oncidiinae the flowers frequently attractexclusively species that act as effective pollinators, the comparative reproductive biology and pollinator specificity of two sympatric Gomesa (G. varicosa and G. montana; Oncidiinae) were analysedbased on

Caenorhabditis becei recombinant inbred lines (beRILs) reveal the scope of heritable variation within a gonochoristic nematode population.

Caenorhabditis nematodes are a powerful model clade for evolutionary genetics. Isogenic lines and panels of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) are among the most essential tools for genetic studies in these species. While most Caenorhabditis species are gonochoristic, large RIL panels have only been developed for self-fertilizing species. This gap biases our understanding and limits our ability to address questions related to the genetic architecture of traits in outbred populations, which have radically higher genetic diversity, heterozygosity, and effective recombination than selfers. Conservative evolution of genetic and genomic features in Caenorhabditis becei, an experimentally tractable gonochoristic worm.

Caenorhabditis nematodes represent a promising model clade for evolutionary genetics and genomics, but research has focused on the three androdioecious species, those with self-fertile hermaphrodites, all in the Elegans Group of species. The majority of Caenorhabditis species are gonochorists, with males and females, characterized by inconveniently high heterozygosity and inbreeding depression. We have identified C. becei, a Japonica Group species from Panamá, as an experimentally tractable gonochorist. We describe a new chromosomal genome assembly of a healthy inbred C. becei reference strain

De Novo Assembly and Annotation from Parental and F1 Puma Genomes of the Florida Panther Genetic Restoration Program.

In the mid-1990s, the population size of Florida panthers became so small that many individuals manifested traits associated with inbreeding depression (e.g., heart defects, cryptorchidism, high pathogen-parasite load). To mitigate these effects, pumas from Texas were introduced into South Florida to augment genetic variation in Florida panthers. In this study, we report a de novo puma genome assembly and annotation after resequencing 10 individual genomes from partial Florida-Texas-F1 trios. The final genome assembly consisted of ∼2.6 Gb and 20,561 functionally annotated protein-coding genes.

Genomic selection accelerates genetic improvement of tolerance to visceral nodular disease in the half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis).

The half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) is an economically important marine fish in China, but its vulnerability to visceral nodular disease (VND) caused by Mycobacterium marinum poses a significant threat to aquaculture. Based on traditional breeding methods, it is slowly to improve disease tolerance and then may lead to inbreeding depression. This study aimed to accelerate the development of VND-tolerant strains of C. semilaevis through genomic selection (GS). In this study, individuals from both reference and candidate populations were genotyped, and more than 7 million high-qu

Born blonde: a recessive loss-of-function mutation in the melanocortin 1 receptor is associated with cream coat coloration in Antarctic fur seals.

Although the genetic basis of color variation has been extensively studied in humans and domestic animals, the genetic polymorphisms responsible for different color morphs remain to be elucidated in many wild vertebrate species. For example, hypopigmentation has been observed in numerous marine mammal species but the underlying mutations have not been identified. A particularly compelling candidate gene for explaining color polymorphism is the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), which plays a key role in the regulation of pigment production. We therefore used Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gaz

Sex determination and polyploid gigantism in the dwarf surfclam (Mulinia lateralis Say).

Mulinia lateralis, the dwarf surfclam, is a suitable model for bivalve genetics because it is hardy and has a short generation time. In this study, gynogenetic and triploid M. lateralis were successfully induced. For gynogenesis, eggs were fertilized with sperm irradiated with ultraviolet light and subsequently treated with cytochalasin B to block the release of the second polar body (PB2). Triploidy was induced by blocking PB2 in normally fertilized eggs. The survival of gynogenetic diploids was very low, only 0.7% to 8 days post-fertilization (PF), compared with 15.2% in the triploid groups

Homozygosity and risk of childhood death due to invasive bacterial disease.

BACKGROUND: Genetic heterozygosity is increasingly being shown to be a key predictor of fitness in natural populations, both through inbreeding depression, inbred individuals having low heterozygosity, and also through chance linkage between a marker and a gene under balancing selection. One important component of fitness that is often highlighted is resistance to parasites and other pathogens. However, the significance of equivalent loci in human populations remains unclear. Consequently, we performed a case-control study of fatal invasive bacterial disease in Kenyan children using a genome-w

Novel genes and sex differences in COVID-19 severity.

Here, we describe the results of a genome-wide study conducted in 11 939 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive cases with an extensive clinical information that were recruited from 34 hospitals across Spain (SCOURGE consortium). In sex-disaggregated genome-wide association studies for COVID-19 hospitalization, genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10-8) was crossed for variants in 3p21.31 and 21q22.11 loci only among males (P = 1.3 × 10-22 and P = 8.1 × 10-12, respectively), and for variants in 9q21.32 near TLE1 only among females (P = 4.4 × 10-8). Detecting Deleterious Recessive Variants in Large Yellow Croaker Using Data from 7337 Individuals.

In diploid organisms, deleterious recessive alleles represent a significant component of genetic mutations and often result in lethal effects when in a homozygous state. Large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea), a critical marine aquaculture species in China, has shown signs of inbreeding depression due to its limited natural distribution along the coasts of Fujian, Guangdong, and Zhejiang provinces, combined with intensive artificial propagation practices. Identifying loci with deleterious recessive homozygous genotypes is therefore crucial for sustainable industry development. In this stud

Gastrointestinal parasites of captive European bison Bison bonasus (L.) with a sign of reduced efficacy of Haemonchus contortus to fenbendazole.

The history of European bison Bison bonasus Linnaeus, 1758 has been stormy since its extinction in the wild after the First World War. Due to the fact that the species was restored from just 12 founders, further expansion has suffered from low genetic variability, rendering the bison vulnerable to various pathogens due to inbreeding depression. Parasites are recognised as a key biological threat to bison population. Thus, parasitological examination including monitoring of the level of anthelmintic resistance in a herd should be a routine procedure involved in management and protection of Euro

Resolving the Evolutionary History of Bighorn Sheep to Inform Future Management: An Answer to the California Bighorn Lineage Question.

Although translocations can be effective for augmenting and restoring wild populations, they can disrupt native patterns of genetic structure, diversity, and local adaptation, thereby hampering conservation efforts. Managers must weigh potential costs and benefits of choosing well-differentiated donor individuals that could confer a boost to genetic diversity while avoiding outbreeding depression or ecological mismatch. This decision is more daunting when taxonomy is unclear or debated. For example, bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) populations in the United States that have been managed as the
