Diphyllobothrium latum: a case of an incidental finding.

Colorectal cancer screening can be performed by fecal occult blood testing, sigmoidoscopy, double contrast barium enema or colonoscopy. Colonoscopy has the significant advantage that polyps can be removed during the same procedure. Occasionally, colonoscopy can also reveal unexpected findings, including parasitic infections, even in asymptomatic patients. Tapeworms or cestodes are hermaphroditic parasites, which can live for considerable periods of time in the human gastrointestinal tract. Fish tapeworm (Diphyllobothrium species) are endemic in various parts of the world, the commonest species

Pineal cysts: an incidental MRI finding?

The incidence of pineal cysts (PC) in "standard" MRI was reviewed. Seven cases of PC were found from 400 consecutive MRI examinations. PC did not produce clinically relevant symptoms in any of the patients. Our data, as well as those emerging from a critical review of the literature, suggest that PC are often asymptomatic and represent an incidental MRI finding.

Managing incidental findings on abdominal and pelvic CT and MRI, part 1: white paper of the ACR Incidental Findings Committee II on adnexal findings.

This white paper describes adnexal (ovarian and paraovarian) incidental findings found on CT and MRI in nonpregnant postmenarchal patients in whom no adnexal disorder is clinically known or suspected. This represents the first of 4 such papers from the ACR Incidental Findings Committee II, which used a consensus method based on repeated reviews and revisions and a collective review and interpretation of relevant literature. Recommendations for the management of incidental adnexal findings are organized into 4 main categories: benign-appearing cysts, probably benign cysts, adnexal masses with c

Management of Incidental Adrenal Masses: A White Paper of the ACR Incidental Findings Committee.

The ACR Incidental Findings Committee presents recommendations for managing adrenal masses that are incidentally detected on CT or MRI. These recommendations represent an update to the adrenal component of the JACR 2010 white paper on managing incidental findings in the adrenal glands, kidneys, liver, and pancreas. The Adrenal Subcommittee, constituted by abdominal radiologists and an endocrine surgeon, developed this algorithm. The algorithm draws from published evidence coupled with expert subspecialist opinion and was finalized by a process of iterative consensus. Algorithm branches categor

Incidental Pathologic Findings in Young Adult Reduction Mammaplasty.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to characterize incidental microscopic findings in this population to determine whether there is a benefit to routine histopathologic examination of breast tissue in young women. METHODS: A retrospective review of young women who underwent reduction mammaplasty between June of 2010 and May of 2018 was performed at a single institution to identify demographics, age at the time of surgery, breast cancer risk factors, and pathologic data. Histologic reevaluation was performed when diagnostic clarification was needed. Descriptive, univariate, and multivariable statisti

Incidental lung findings in coronary computed tomography angiography.

OBJECTIVE: In coronary computed tomography angiography, a part of the lung parenchyma also enters the image area which is called the field of view. The aim of this study was to evaluate the rate of pulmonary abnormalities and document their association with demographic features in subjects undergoing multislice coronary computed tomography angiography obtained for the assessment of coronary artery disease. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study evaluating the coronary computed tomography angiography scans of 1,050 patients (58.5% males and 47.3% smokers) with a mean age of 52.2

Incidental Findings Diagnosed during Preprocedural Evaluation of TAVR.

INTRODUCTION: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement is an important therapeutic option for aortic stenosis (AS) patients who have high surgical risk. TAVR is a complex procedure. Proper preparation of the patient is of significant importance for the final success and affects the morbidity and mortality of the TAVR directly. Pre-TAVR computed tomography is one of the corner stones of these preparation steps, and many patients get some incidental diagnoses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this trial, we have investigated 155 patients who had underwent TAVR between February 2013 and March 2017 at Hac

Incidental radiologic findings in the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is a common genetic microdeletion syndrome that results in cognitive delays and an increased risk of several psychiatric disorders, particularly schizophrenia. The current study investigates the prevalence of incidental neuroradiologic findings within this population and their relationships with psychiatric conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Brain MR imaging from 58 individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome was reviewed by board-certified radiologists by using standard clinical procedures. Intracranial incidental findings were classified

Well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor and osteoporosis: incidental findings?

The neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) have an increased incidence related to the age. Secondary osteoporosis might be found in patients with bone metastases and in those with NETs associated Cushing's disease or primary hyperparathyroidism. Primary osteoporosis might be found in postmenopausal women, but in case with non-metastatic NET as G1 NET it is difficult to establish the NET contribution to the bone loss. We present the case of a 53-year-old female accidentally diagnosed with G1 lung NET after surgery of the tumor. The immunohistochemistry pointed positive reaction for CHROMO, SYN and negati

Imaging of incidental findings on thoracic computed tomography.

With continued improvement of high-resolution multidetector computed tomography imaging, there is an increasing number of unsuspected thoracic findings. Although many of these findings are of little clinical significance, other findings such as small incidental lung nodules require additional imaging to exclude more worrisome causes, often resulting in greater exposure to ionizing radiation, increased cost, and patient anxiety. Although greater uniformity among radiologists regarding likely benign findings may help reduce unnecessary imaging studies, the lack of clear follow-up guidelines for

Forget Me Not: Incidental Findings on Breast MRI.

With the growing utilization and expanding role of breast MRI, breast imaging radiologists may encounter an increasing number of incidental findings beyond the breast and axilla. Breast MRI encompasses a large area of anatomic coverage extending from the lower neck to the upper abdomen. While most incidental findings on breast MRI are benign, identifying metastatic disease can have a substantial impact on staging, prognosis, and treatment. Breast imaging radiologists should be familiar with common sites, MRI features, and breast cancer subtypes associated with metastatic disease to assist in d

Incidental Laryngeal Findings in Routine Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) refers to the backflow of acidic stomach content into the larynx, pharynx, and upper aerodigestive tract. The diagnosis of LPR is based on the patient's history and findings of the laryngoscopy associated with LPR. Other possible manifestations consistent with LPR symptoms include laryngeal cancer, vocal fold granulomas, Reinke's space edema, and vocal polyps. In this study, we compared the characteristics of patients with LPR symptoms and incidental laryngeal findings (ILF) in the laryngoscopic evaluation to those without ILF (WILF). OBJECTIVES: Det
