A lysimeter experimental study and numerical characterisation of the leaching of incinerator bottom ash waste.

Incinerator bottom ash (IBA) is a residual produced from incinerating municipal solid waste. In the past, IBA presented a big waste disposal problem; however, various recycling approaches have been adopted in recent years to mitigate this problem, as well as to provide a useful alternative to using primary aggregate resources. The use of IBA as an alternative to conventional aggregates in different civil engineering construction applications helps to conserve premium grade aggregate supplies; however, when IBA is in contact with water in the field, as a consequence of precipitation events or c

Thermodynamic behaviour of sodium and calcium based sorbents in the emission control of waste incinerators.

The dry treatment of flue gas produced by incineration processes is discussed thermodynamically. The study investigates the theoretical limits achieved by sodium and calcium based sorbents in the removal of the pollutant species HCl, NOx and SO2. Calculations were performed varying the temperature and the molar ratio between the amount of the injected alkaline sorbent and the content of the pollutant gaseous species in the flue gas. Results show that sodium cation based sorbents are more efficient than calcium based ones in the whole investigated temperature range (100-600 degrees C). The high

Toward low NaOH and silicate concentrations for alkali-activated municipal solid waste incineration fly ash.

Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash (MSWIFA) is a hazardous waste characterized by a high concentration of heavy metals and a high soluble fraction of salts. It is commonly stabilised by the addition of cement. This paper proposes an alternative method of solidification/stabilisation involving room-temperature alkali activation as a low-carbon, cement-free solution. This industrially feasible method retains a waste content of over 50 wt% in the wet mix and uses the low concentrations of NaOH and sodium silicates to activate the material by adding Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GG

Chemical speciation, distribution and leaching behavior of chlorides from municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash.

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash is an environmentally harmful solid waste that cannot be recycled without pre-treatment. The chloride content in bottom ash (BA) is a major obstacle that restricts its application as secondary building materials. Here, the chemical speciation of the chlorides in BA is systematically studied with multiple analytical techniques, i.e., quantitative XRD, microanalysis and XPS. In addition to halite (NaCl), several chloride-rich minerals are present in BA. These phases are hydrous metal oxides, ettringite, decomposed hydration products (C4A3) and

Geopolymers as a material suitable for immobilization of fly ash from municipal waste incineration plants.

This paper discusses the possibility of using the process of geopolymerization to immobilize ash from municipal waste incineration plants. Fly ash used in the related research came from the same incineration plant, one of the biggest in Poland. The examination was conducted on the waste samples labeled as 190107* and 190113*. The comparison included such properties of waste as chemical composition, dioxin content, and size and morphology of particles. The waste was solidified in geopolymer matrix made from (i) fly ash from the combustion of bituminous coal or (ii) metakaolin. The waste percent

Evaluation of canisters for measuring emissions of volatile organic air pollutants from hazardous waste incineration.

Regulation to control air emissions of toxic organic compounds require the collection and analysis of effluent gas from low level sources such as hazardous waste incinerators. The standard SW-846 Method specifies the use of Tenax and Tenax/charcoal adsorbent traps for collection of volatile organics from incinerators. This study evaluates passivated stainless steel canisters as an alternative to adsorbent traps to eliminate some of the problems associated with adsorbent sampling. Initially the stability of 18 nonpolar, volatile organic compounds was determined in Summa-treated stainless steel

Environmental assessment of municipal solid waste composting: comparing landfilling and incineration scenarios towards a sustainable approach.

Driven by the high content of organic materials in municipal solid waste (MSW) of 70% in Iran and the growing demand for mineral fertilizer, refinement of composting technology is imperative. In the pursuit of environmental sustainability, further investigation into the life cycle assessment of the composting process and end-of-life waste management must be conducted. Hence, this study scrutinizes the environmental burdens of the composting plant operation from cradle to gate. Because 50% of raw MSW was not converted to compost, its final disposal was evaluated based on incineration, landfill,

Innovative process for sulphur recovery from waste incineration flue gases: production of marketable sodium bisulphite solution.

This study presents an innovative process for recovering sulphur from hazardous waste incineration flue gases, designed to produce a marketable sodium bisulphite solution while ensuring complete SO2 removal. This new process is characterized by a double absorption strategy at two different pH levels. The first step, at an acidic pH, generates the desired bisulphite solution, while the second step, at a basic pH, produces the sulphite solution for recycling into the first step and ensures total SO2 removal. The process's performance and feasibility were evaluated on a laboratory scale using a b

Effect of calcium oxide on chromium solidification during the melting of hazardous waste incineration fly ash.

Thermal treatment technology considerably affects the harmlessness of fly ash (FA), but highly toxic heavy metals, such as Cr, attract considerable attention. In this study, we investigated the influence of CaO dosage at 600°C-1200 °C on the curing effect of Cr during FA thermal treatment based on the combination effect of CaO. Static, dynamic, and continuous sequential leachings were performed for the sintered products. Results showed that the leaching concentration of Cr decreased by approximately 91% when CaO dosage was 8.57%, and the difference in the residual state was the main reason for

Possibilities of mercury removal in the dry flue gas cleaning lines of solid waste incineration units.

Dry methods of the flue gas cleaning (for HCl and SO2 removal) are useful particularly in smaller solid waste incineration units. The amount and forms of mercury emissions depend on waste (fuel) composition, content of mercury and chlorine and on the entire process of the flue gas cleaning. In the case of high HCl/total Hg molar ratio in the flue gas, the majority (usually 70-90%) of mercury is present in the form of HgCl2 and a smaller amount in the form of mercury vapors at higher temperatures. Removal of both main forms of mercury from the flue gas is dependent on chemical reactions and sor

Recovery of zero-valent gold from cyanide solution by a combined method of biosorption and incineration.

A new combined way of biosorption and incineration is presented for the recovery of gold from gold-cyanide solutions. Decarboxylated biosorbent (DCB) was prepared by removing interfering carboxyl groups from the surface of inactive Corynebacterium glutamicum. The recovery of gold from the exhausted biosorbents was performed using elution or incineration. The maximum gold(I) uptakes were obtained as 50.19 and 86.16mg/g for the raw biomass and DCB, respectively. The biosorption performance of DCB indicated that interfering carboxyl groups were successfully removed. The recovery efficiency of ion

Leaching Kinetics of Heavy Metals from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash: A Langmuir-Based Model.

Langmuir kinetics are widely used to describe adsorption processes. In this study, a novel leaching kinetic model based on Langmuir kinetics was developed to simulate the dynamic leaching behavior of heavy metals from fly ash. The initial conditions and equilibrium concentrations of the Langmuir-based model differ fundamentally between adsorption and leaching. The proposed model can be simplified to the conventional pseudo-first-order model under two limiting conditions but cannot be reduced to the pseudo-second-order model. Leaching experiments were conducted on two fly ash samples with Zn, P

Hydrothermal treatment of typical combustion and incineration residues: State-of-the-art technologies and future perspectives.

Coal combustion and waste incineration processes generate massive solid residues, posing severe environmental risks and resource waste. Effective valorization of typical combustion and incineration residues, including coal fly ash (CFA), coal bottom ash (CBA), municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (IBA), and incineration fly ash (IFA), is crucial for achieving circular economy goals and environmental sustainability. As a mild and efficient thermochemical technology, hydrothermal (HT) treatment improves the reactivity of solid residues and enables synthesis of high-value functional prod

Temperature-dependent partitioning of 1,4-dioxane between atmospheric emissions and landfill leachate at waste incineration facilities.

Highly reactive lime powder (HRLP) containing diethylene glycol (DEG) as a hydration retarder is widely used in bag-filter air pollution control units at municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) facilities in Japan. Under the acidic, elevated-temperature conditions of the bag-filter (∼170 °C, H2SO4/HCl atmosphere), residual DEG undergoes acid-catalyzed cyclodehydration to produce 1,4-dioxane, a Group 2B carcinogen fully miscible with water and persistent in the environment. Using laboratory-simulated bag-filter conditions, this study quantifies both pathways for 1,4-dioxane from DEG-containin

Efficient vitrification of hazardous waste incineration fly ash and slag via the CaO-SiO2-Fe2O3 system.

Landfilling hazardous waste presents substantial environmental risks, necessitating the development of reliable and sustainable disposal technologies. This study explores a novel co-vitrification strategy for hazardous waste incineration fly ash (HWFA), slag (HWS), and iron-rich slag (IRS) by utilizing the CaO-SiO2-Fe2O3 ternary system. Theoretical analysis indicates that optimizing the ternary component ratios can achieve a minimum eutectic temperature of 1192 °C, significantly reducing the liquidus temperature compared to individual HWFA, HWS, and IRS raw materials. Systematic experimental v

Characterization and comparison of gasification and incineration fly ashes generated from municipal solid waste in Singapore.

Slagging-gasification has received increasing attention as a municipal solid waste treatment technology. Compared with incineration, slagging-gasification can produce valuable syngas and generates by-products that can be easier reusable in different applications in some cases. Among these by-products, the gasification fly ash (GFA) is the only hazardous solid residue to be landfilled. To explore its potential recycling methods and maximize its recycling efficiency, the detailed physicochemical properties of GFA are crucial. This study conducted a comprehensive characterization of six GFA sampl

Fate of heavy metals during molten salts thermal treatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ashes.

Thermal treatment could effectively realize the detoxification of heavy metals in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash through the approach of removal or stabilization process. To lower the operating temperature and suppress the evaporation of heavy metals, a molten salts (NaCl-CaCl2) thermal treatment method was proposed for the detoxification of heavy metals from MSWI fly ash at a relatively mild condition (600/800 °C). The fate of heavy metals during the heating process and their stabilization properties in the remained ash slag after molten salts thermal treatment were investi

The effects of accelerated carbonation on CO(2) uptake and metal release from incineration APC residues.

This work presents the results of a study on accelerated carbonation of incinerator air pollution control residues, with a particular focus on the modifications in the leaching behaviour of the ash. Aqueous carbonation experiments were carried out using 100% CO(2) at different temperatures, pressures and liquid-to-solid ratios, in order to assess their influence on process kinetics, CO(2) uptake and the leaching behaviour of major and trace elements. The ash showed a particularly high reactivity towards CO(2), owing to the abundance of calcium hydroxides phases, with a maximum CO(2) uptake of
