BACKGROUND: Incisional hernia (IH) is a common complication following liver transplantation (LT), contributing to significant morbidity and impaired quality of life. The interplay of transplant-specific factors, patient comorbidities, surgical complexity, and immunosuppression presents considerable challenges in hernia repair, often accompanied by substantial risks.
AIM: To assess the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of IH repair in LT recipients.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted across MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and PubMe

We describe an ovarian borderline tumour that presented as an acute deterioration in an incisional hernia secondary to intraperitoneal mucin accumulation. The differential diagnosis associated with hernial sac contents and options for opportunistic diagnosis are discussed. This case raises awareness of potential serious diagnoses that may be overlooked during emergent hernia repair.

INTRODUCTION: Hemipelvectomies are uncommon operations, usually performed for primary or metastatic malignant disease and less frequently for benign-aggressive tumours. There are very few reports in literature regarding complications of these procedures and even fewer reports about post hemipelvectomy hernias in particular.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present the only reported case of an incisional hernia of the urinary bladder following internal hemipelvectomy for aneurysmal bone cyst of the pubic bone. A careful literature review is also performed.
DISCUSSION: The development of the incisiona

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intestinal ischemia is a very rare complication of laparoscopic procedures. In this report, we describe the first case of fatal large bowel ischemia in the aftermath of laparoscopic incisional hernia repair.
METHODS: A literature search using PubMed was performed to identify all published cases of intestinal ischemia following laparoscopic procedures.
RESULTS: Our search revealed 13 cases of intestinal ischemia following various laparoscopic procedures. Including this one, 10 of 14 cases reported on so far had impaired cardiovascular, hepatic or renal function or a

BACKGROUND: Open incisional hernia repair is associated with high morbidity and recurrence rates. Laparoscopic approaches offer improved long-term results with low complication rates.
METHODS: Laparoscopic repair was attempted in 117 consecutive patients (median age 68 (range 31-91) years, 50 men) undergoing 122 operations. A novel mesh centralization technique was employed. Data were recorded prospectively. Follow-up was by clinical review or telephone consultation.
RESULTS: One hundred and eighteen procedures (96.7 per cent) were completed laparoscopically; four required conversion. Forty-

Hernia through the suprapubic catheterization (SPC) site is rare. Attention is required for such hernias as they get obstructed due to the narrow neck. We report this rare presentation in an elderly gentleman with obstructed incisional hernia through the SPC site, which was reduced and subsequently had a successful mesh repair.

BACKGROUND: Traditional approach to incisional hernias (IHs) in cirrhotic patients is plagued by a significant recurrence rate and frequent wound infections. The laparoscopic repair of IHs was designed to offer a minimally invasive and tension-free technique that yields less morbidity and fewer recurrences than the standard open repair. In cirrhotic patients there are additional reasons for the benefits of laparoscopy. First, preservation of the abdominal wall avoids interruption of large collateral veins. Second, nonexposure of viscera restricts electrolytic and protein losses, and improves a

INTRODUCTION: The reported incidence of incisional hernia following orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) varies from 4% to 23%. Postoperative wound complications are less frequent after laparoscopic repair while maintaining low recurrence rates. We present our experience in managing this complication.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospectively, collected data of all patients who underwent liver transplant and developed incisional hernias were analyzed. Patients' demographic data, anthropometric data, transplantation-related data, and repair-related operative and postoperative data were collecte

Since Ramirez et al. presented the first case of component separation for abdominal wall hernias in 1990, it has undergone multiple modifications. This technique, which has been mainly used for large hernias where primary closure of the abdominal wall is not feasible, or for staged management of patients with open abdomens, results in multiple wound complications. In 2007, Rosen et al. reported on the laparoscopic approach to component separation that is associated with less subcutaneous dissection and the consequent advantage of a decreased risk of flap necrosis and wound infection. Here we d

BACKGROUND: A single-center retrospective study was conducted to investigate whether the prophylactic application of a single-use negative pressure wound therapy (sNPWT) dressing on closed surgical incisions following incisional hernia (IH) repair of the abdominal wall with meshes reduces the risk of surgical site occurrence (SSO) and the necessity for surgical reoperation.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 55 patients with incisional hernias classified as W2 (> 4-10 cm) or W3 (> 10 cm) according to the European Hernia Society classification, treated between 2013 and 2023. All p

Bochdalek hernias (BHs), though rare, are the most common congenital diaphragmatic hernias. Their coexistence with an ectopic intrathoracic kidney (IK), found in 0.25% of cases, is even rarer. Most IKs function normally; however, other than reported cases of BH-related obstruction, incarceration and strangulation, kidney-specific complications such as infection, obstruction and stone formation can occur. We present a patient presenting with a BH-IK in the setting of a symptomatic, multiply recurrent incisional hernia. Although there is no consensus on the best BH-IK repair technique, we propos

OBJECTIVES: Incisional hernia (IH) following kidney transplantation is underdiagnosed, with reported incidence rates of 1-7%. This study aimed to evaluate IH prevalence using computed tomography (CT), propose a novel classification system correlated with symptomatology, and evaluate its effect on interobserver IH detection rates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of adults undergoing kidney-alone transplantation (2010-2017) at two Swedish centres was conducted. Patients with previous ipsilateral transplantation or poor-quality CT were excluded. Abdominal CT scans obtained ≥ 30 day

Herniation of a gravid uterus through an abdominal wall incisional hernia with overlying skin necrosis is exceptionally rare. A 29-year-old multiparous K30 + 4/40 pregnant female presented with a 1-month history of worsening abdominal wall skin changes. Magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen and pelvis confirmed herniation of the gravid uterus into the hernia sac. A lower uterine segment caesarean section and hernia repair were performed by the general surgical and obstetrics team in view of the potential maternofoetal complications. This case highlights the importance of early recognition

INTRODUCTION: Anterolateral transpsoas approach is considered as safe access to the retroperitoneum with low risk of complications. The most frequent described complications due to this approach were nerve, bowel, urethral and kidney injury. An incisional hernia is a rare complication in anterolateral approach, as a result of a nonhealing surgical wound or late disruption of the fascia; it occurs in 1% of the incisions after primary closure.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a 75-year-old woman who underwent spinal surgery with a double approach, consisting of an anterolateral transpsoas approach a

OBJECTIVE: Ventral incisional hernia is a common complication of abdominal surgery. The marked improvements in medical technology and healthcare, lead to an increasing number of elderly patients to take advantage of even complex surgical procedures. The objective of this literature review was to analyze the risk factors for ventral incisional hernia in elderly patients and to identify measures that might decrease the incidence of this complication.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An analysis of the surgical literature was performed using the search engines EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and PubMed with par

INTRODUCTION: The authors present their first experience with the laparscopic hernioplasty of the incisional hernias appearing after laparotomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the period from January 2008 to June 2012, 29 patients underwent hernioplasty by the IPOM technique (Intra Peritoneal Onlay Mesh) using Teflon mesh. The patients were followed up prospectively for the mean time of 29 months. The mean age of the patients was 57 years, the average size of the hernias was 6.5 cm, and the average time of the operation was 75 minutes.
RESULTS: In the early postoperative period in 3 patients (11%)

The development of wound complications is closely related to the surgical technique at wound closure. The risk of the suture technique affecting the development of wound dehiscence and incisional hernia can be monitored through the suture length to wound length ratio. Midline incisions should be closed in one layer by a continuous-suture technique using a monofilament suture material tied with self-locking knots. Excessive tension should not be placed on the suture. Closure must always be with a suture length to wound length ratio higher than 4.

BACKGROUND: Ventral hernia is a common complication of open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). The aim of this study was to determine whether prophylactic mesh placement during RYGB would reduce the incidence of postoperative hernias.
METHODS: Obese patients undergoing RYGB by a single surgeon had prosthetic mesh placed in a subfascial location at the conclusion of the procedure. The incidences of recurrent hernia and morbidity associated with the placement of mesh were assessed.
RESULTS: Sixteen patients underwent RYGB with prophylactic mesh placement over 6 months. The average preoperative b
