Reading preterm infants' behavioral cues: an intervention study with parents of premature infants born <32 weeks.

The effect of a short-term intervention with parents in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on their knowledge of infant behavioral cues and confidence in caregiving was examined. Ten sets of parents with a total of 22 premature infants born <32 weeks gestational age admitted to a NICU were enrolled in a time-lag control trial over an 8-month period. The intervention group was given 4 sessions of instructions on preterm infant behavior for a period of 2 weeks. The control group did not receive the instructions. All parents completed two subscales of the Mother and Baby Scale (MABS) at week

Crying behavior and emotional-behavioral outcomes in high-risk very preterm infants: A prospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Regulatory problems (RPs), including excessive crying (EC), sleeping, and feeding difficulties, affect 5-20 % of infants. Their association with later behavioral and emotional problems remains unclear, particularly in preterm populations at elevated neurodevelopmental risk. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 329 high-risk very preterm infants (gestational age <30 weeks and/or birthweight <1000 g). Parental reports of crying behavior (hours/day) were collected at three and six months corrected age. Emotional and behavioral outcomes were assessed using the Brief Inf

Oxytocin promotes prosocial behavior and related neural responses in infant macaques at-risk for compromised social development.

Although positive effects of oxytocin (OT) on social functioning are well-demonstrated, little is known about the mechanisms through which OT may drive early social development, or its therapeutic efficacy in infancy. To address these critical issues, we investigated the effects of exogenous OT on neural (EEG) and behavioral responses during observation of live facial gestures in infant macaques with limited social exposure (i.e. nursery-reared). Three key findings were revealed. First, OT increased alpha suppression over posterior scalp regions during observation of facial gestures but not no

Beyond single time points: prospective longitudinal maternal depression trajectories shape infant social behavior in the first year.

Maternal depression symptoms are diverse and vary in onset, duration, and severity, and it may affect the infant differently. This study aimed to (1) determine the different trajectories of maternal depression symptoms from late pregnancy to one year postpartum, and (2) examine the relationship between maternal depression trajectories and infant development within the first year of life. In this longitudinal study (N = 218), maternal depression levels were measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and latent class growth analysis were used to identify distinct trajectories. Does Caregiver Behavior Mediate the Relationship Between Cultural Individualism and Infant Pain at 12 Months of Age?

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to understand the relationship between caregiver culture and infant pain expression at the 12-month immunization and discern if a mechanism subsuming this relationship was the quality of caregiver behaviors (emotional availability). Infants (N = 393) with immunization data at 12 months of age were examined. On the basis of the Development of Infant Acute Pain Responding model, a mediation model was developed to examine how caregiver behaviors mediate the relationship between caregiver heritage culture and infant pain. Culture was operationalized by an objectively d

Adult separation anxiety and unsettled infant behavior: Associations with adverse parenting during childhood and insecure adult attachment.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the prevalence and correlates of Adult Separation Anxiety Disorder (ASAD) and Adult Separation Anxiety (ASA) symptoms in a sample of first-time mothers with an unsettled infant during the first postpartum year. METHODS: Eighty-three primiparous women admitted to a residential parent-infant program participated in a structured clinical interview for DSM-IV diagnosis and questionnaires assessing ASA symptoms, adult attachment and childhood parenting experiences. Nurses recorded infant behavior using 24-hour charts. RESULTS: The prevalence of ASAD in this sample w

Initial Evidence for Symptoms of Postpartum Parent-Infant Relationship Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (PI-ROCD) and Associated Risk for Perturbed Maternal Behavior and Infant Social Disengagement From Mother.

Infant socioemotional development and underlying brain maturation occur primarily within the context of early caregiver-infant relationships. Perinatal research demonstrates detrimental impact of postpartum pathology, including postnatal onset of maternal OCD-on the mother-infant relationship. The present study is the first to examine postnatal onset of a particular dimension of OCD symptoms focusing on close interpersonal relationships (relationship-OCD, i.e., ROCD) within a general population sample. Specifically, we assessed whether symptoms of Parent-Child ROCD (PC-ROCD), may onset postnat

Evaluation of the Behavioral Determinants of Infant Oral Hygiene Practices in a Rural Area.

Background Dental caries is one of the most common oral health diseases in children. Early childhood caries (ECC) in children can lead to delayed overall growth in the future. This can be prevented by early initiation of infant oral hygiene practices (IOHP). As mothers are the primary caregivers, assessing their behavioral factors that play a significant role in IOHP can help design a customized health prevention plan for appropriate infant oral hygiene practices. Methodology A questionnaire based-study was carried out in an Anganwadi (rural child care center in India) of Nagpur region, Centra

Sleep behavior of infants with infantile hemangioma treated with propranolol-a cohort study.

Sleep problems are frequently reported in infants treated with propranolol for infantile hemangiomas, possibly serving as a marker for a negative impact on central nervous system function. In this cohort study, we objectively investigate the sleep behavior of infants with infantile hemangiomas on propranolol compared to a healthy, untreated control group. Sleep of propranolol-treated infants and controls was investigated using ankle actigraphy and a 24-h diary for 7-10 days at ages 3 and 6 months. The main outcome measures were the Number of Nighttime Awakenings and Sleep Efficiency. The main

Associations of infant feeding practices and picky eating behaviors of preschool children.

Picky eating behaviors are prevalent during childhood and are often linked to nutritional problems. However, information on the determinants of picky eating behaviors during infancy, when food acceptance patterns develop, is scarce. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of infant feeding practices on the development of picky eating behaviors during preschool years. Baseline survey data from the Synergistic Theory and Research on Obesity and Nutrition Group Kids (STRONG Kids) program were used for this retrospective data analysis. Primary caregiver-child dyads were recruited from chil

Academic, social, and behavioral outcomes at age 12 of infants born preterm.

The effects of gradient levels of perinatal morbidity on school outcomes have been investigated at age 12 in four preterm groups, classified as healthy (no medical or neurological illness), medical morbidity, neurological morbidity, and small-for-gestational-age (SGA), and a full-term comparison group. Teachers report on academic competence, social skills, and problem behaviors. Data on school type, classroom setting, and school service use are gathered from school records. Preterm groups are found to be equivalent to full-term peers in social skills and problem behavior. Preterm groups with n

Touching behaviors of infants of depressed mothers during normal and perturbed interactions.

The present study investigated the touching behaviors of 4-month-old infants of depressed and non-depressed mothers during the still-face (SF; maternal emotional unavailability) and separation (SP; maternal physical unavailability) procedures. Forty-one dyads participated in the present study; dyads were from low SES backgrounds and they exhibited poor relationship qualities (e.g. poor maternal sensitivity, low infant responsiveness); thus, they were considered at-risk. Results indicated that infants exhibited more patting and pulling when mothers were unavailable during the SF and SP procedur

Early emergence of behavior and social-emotional problems in very preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: Children born very preterm are reported to have an increased frequency of social, emotional, and behavioral problems at school age compared with their peers born at term. The primary aim of this study was to compare social-emotional difficulties and competencies of very preterm and full-term children at 2 years' corrected age. In addition, the relation between perinatal variables and early behavior problems was also examined to help identify those very preterm children most at risk. METHOD: At 2 years' corrected age, the parents of 188 very preterm (gestational age <30 weeks or bir

[Impact of parenting behavior relevant to infant's sleep on maternal sleep and health].

BACKGROUND: Maternal health is affected by infant's sleep problems like night awakening or bedtime difficulties. Previous studies indicated that infant's sleep problems are affected by particular parenting behaviour (hereinafter referred to as parenting). However, the relation between maternal sleep and infant's sleep has been unclear and there is only limited information on the interaction between parenting, infant's sleep, maternal sleep, and maternal health. The purpose of this study was: 1. to examine the relationship between infant's sleep problems and maternal sleep and health; and 2. to

The functional neuroanatomy of maternal love: mother's response to infant's attachment behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Maternal love, which may be the core of maternal behavior, is essential for the mother-infant attachment relationship and is important for the infant's development and mental health. However, little has been known about these neural mechanisms in human mothers. We examined patterns of maternal brain activation in response to infant cues using video clips. METHODS: We performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measurements while 13 mothers viewed video clips, with no sound, of their own infant and other infants of approximately 16 months of age who demonstrated two diff

Academic performance and behavioral difficulties after neonatal and infant heart surgery.

Although advances in medical and surgical arenas have allowed the ability to "mend" children born with congenital heart disease, the increasing number of survivors has created a growing cohort of children with potential academic difficulties. This article reviews the current understanding of the midterm neurologic outcomes of children who underwent neonatal and infant cardiac surgery. Lesions including transposition of great arteries, tetralogy of Fallot, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, and single ventricle lesions requiring Fontan palliation or ca

Behavior of caregivers to protect their infants from exposure to the sun in Queensland, Australia.

Exposure to the sun by infants has been demonstrated to increase the risk of the development of melanoma and other skin cancers later in life. A cohort of 508 women who delivered healthy Caucasian babies were followed up at 1 year to determine their knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding sun protection towards themselves and their child. In addition, the 1-year-old infants were assessed by a trained nurse for the number of nevi they had on their skin. Results indicate caregivers reported a high level of sun-protection practices towards their child, with 93% of the caregivers reporting us

Dental caries patterns and oral health behaviors in Arizona infants and toddlers.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to use tooth eruption sequence, and a tooth- and surface-specific caries analysis method to determine: (1) the temporal relationship between tooth eruption and caries onset; (2) the validity of pre-existing concepts of caries progression; and (3) the relationship of certain putative health behaviors with caries prevalence. METHODS: A total of 2,428 Arizona children aged 6-36-months, who were recruited from WIC programs (a federal program for low-income children at nutritional risk), health fairs and private day care centers, received visual dental caries
