Sustained Reductions in Online Search Interest for Communicable Eye and Other Conditions During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Infodemiology Study.

BACKGROUND: In a prior study at the start of the pandemic, we reported reduced numbers of Google searches for the term "conjunctivitis" in the United States in March and April 2020 compared with prior years. As one explanation, we conjectured that reduced information-seeking may have resulted from social distancing reducing contagious conjunctivitis cases. Here, after 1 year of continued implementation of social distancing, we asked if there have been persistent reductions in searches for "conjunctivitis," and similarly for other communicable disease terms, compared to control terms. OBJECTIV

The Influence of Media Coverage and Governmental Policies on Google Queries Related to COVID-19 Cutaneous Symptoms: Infodemiology Study.

BACKGROUND: During COVID-19, studies have reported the appearance of internet searches for disease symptoms before their validation by the World Health Organization. This suggested that monitoring of these searches with tools including Google Trends may help monitor the pandemic itself. In Europe and North America, dermatologists reported an unexpected outbreak of cutaneous acral lesions (eg, chilblain-like lesions) in April 2020. However, external factors such as public communications may also hinder the use of Google Trends as an infodemiology tool. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess the

Analyzing Online Search Trends for Kidney, Prostate, and Bladder Cancers in China: Infodemiology Study Using Baidu Search Data (2011-2023).

BACKGROUND: Cancers of the bladder, kidney, and prostate are the 3 major genitourinary cancers that significantly contribute to the global burden of disease (GBD) and continue to show increasing rates of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In mainland China, understanding the cancer burden on patients and their families is crucial; however, public awareness and concerns about these cancers, particularly from the patient's perspective, remain predominantly focused on financial costs. A more comprehensive exploration of their needs and concerns has yet to be fully addressed. OBJECTIVE: This stud

Public information-seeking about orthopedic surgical robotics: a decade-scale infodemiological analysis and forecast through 2030.

Public information-seeking is an underused indicator of the diffusion of robotic-assisted surgery, yet no study has compared it jointly across the three highest-volume orthopedic domains or projected it toward the coming decade. Using Google Trends relative search volume (RSV: a term's share of all searches in a given month, rescaled 0-100 against the highest month of the study window, and not a count of searches) retrieved programmatically (Health category, worldwide, January 2014-June 2026; 150 monthly observations per term), we quantified and forecast public search interest in robotic knee,

The Complex Interaction Between Sleep-Related Information, Misinformation, and Sleep Health: Call for Comprehensive Research on Sleep Infodemiology and Infoveillance.

The complex interplay between sleep-related information-both accurate and misleading-and its impact on clinical public health is an emerging area of concern. Lack of awareness of the importance of sleep, and inadequate information related to sleep, combined with misinformation about sleep, disseminated through social media, nonexpert advice, commercial interests, and other sources, can distort individuals' understanding of healthy sleep practices. Such misinformation can lead to the adoption of unhealthy sleep behaviors, reducing sleep quality and exacerbating sleep disorders. Simultaneously,

Twenty-year infodemiology of bone sarcomas in France (2006-2026): celebrity effect, lexical gap, and limited online impact of awareness campaigns.

BACKGROUND: Primary bone sarcomas - osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, and chondrosarcoma - are rare malignant tumours with insufficient public awareness. Infodemiology through Google Trends (GT) enables analysis of population-level interest in these entities over time. No French analysis covering a long observation period has been published. This study addresses three specific questions: (1) Is celebrity-driven media exposure the primary driver of public online interest in bone sarcomas? (2) Do Sarcoma Awareness Month campaigns (July) generate a measurable increase in search volume? (3) Is there a

Use of Large Language Models to Classify Epidemiological Characteristics in Synthetic and Real-World Social Media Posts About Conjunctivitis Outbreaks: Infodemiology Study.

BACKGROUND: The use of web-based search and social media can help identify epidemics, potentially earlier than clinical methods or even potentially identifying unreported outbreaks. Monitoring for eye-related epidemics, such as conjunctivitis outbreaks, can facilitate early public health intervention to reduce transmission and ocular comorbidities. However, monitoring social media content for conjunctivitis outbreaks is costly and laborious. Large language models (LLMs) could overcome these barriers by assessing the likelihood that real-world outbreaks are being described. However, public heal
