Online health information seeking and the association with anxiety among older adults.

INTRODUCTION: The Internet supplies users with endless access to a wealth of information and is generally the first source searched by U.S. adults (18 years and older) when seeking health information. Age and anxiety are associated with online health information seeking (OHIS). Older adults (65 years and older) are increasing their OHIS. Importantly, OHIS can potentially lead to improved health outcomes for older adults. The relationship between OHIS and anxiety is less clear. Studies report those with more symptoms of anxiety are more likely to be OHIS, while other studies find the reverse pa

Could be better: adolescent access to health information and care.

UNLABELLED: Many adolescents must overcome a broad range of barriers to access health information and care and are consequently reluctant to pursue assistance for their health concerns. In this review, we examine from whom and how adolescents seek help (for example, by consulting with friends and family members and by searching for health information using online platforms) and how adolescents treat symptoms without consulting with a clinician by engaging in self-medication. Next, we suggest ways to help adolescents receive accurate health information and access to healthcare through school-ba

Breast cancer information on the internet: analysis of accessibility and accuracy.

Studies show internet sourced information often has poor accuracy. However, it is rapidly becoming a major source of patient information. Our aim was to assess accuracy of breast cancer-related information on the internet. The top five breast cancer-related search terms were identified using the commercial program "Wordtracker". These terms were searched using the search-engine "Google" and the top 100 webpages per topic analysed for applicability and accuracy of information. Overall 500 webpages were analysed. 42% were inapplicable to the question asked. Applicable accuracy rates were variabl

Consumer and Patient Health Information Seeking With Generative AI Tools: Scoping Review of Facilitators and Barriers.

BACKGROUND: Generative AI (GenAI) tools powered by large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used by the public to seek health information. Unlike traditional web search, these systems generate conversational responses that may alter how users assess credibility, manage uncertainty, verify information, and decide whether to consult clinicians. As GenAI becomes more embedded in everyday health information practices, a clearer synthesis of the emerging empirical evidence is needed. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review mapped and synthesized empirical research on consumer and patient health inform

Health Advice from Internet Discussion Forums: How Bad Is Dangerous?

BACKGROUND: Concerns over online health information-seeking behavior point to the potential harm incorrect, incomplete, or biased information may cause. However, systematic reviews of health information have found few examples of documented harm that can be directly attributed to poor quality information found online. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to improve our understanding of the quality and quality characteristics of information found in online discussion forum websites so that their likely value as a peer-to-peer health information-sharing platform could be assessed. METHODS: A t

Biased information-seeking and information-integration in social anxiety.

Social anxiety is associated with an intense fear of social evaluation and rejection, often leading to avoidance behaviors and distress. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of how various cognitive biases may lead to the development and maintenance of social anxiety. While early models of social anxiety have focused on negative biases in perception, attention, memory and emotion regulation, more recent literature has started to characterize biases in information-seeking and information-integration, especially in the context of self-referential information and social feedback

The association of internet searches and actual suicide in Spain.

High suicide rates are a major issue in Spain, to the extent that they are the main non-natural cause of death in this country. The present study analyses the relationship between Internet searches and actual suicide rates in Spain. For this purpose, we employ data from actual suicide rates and Google® searches for Spain, differencing by the means used to commit suicide. Our results show that suicide ("suicidio") search term seems to be positively associated with higher total suicide rates, in addition to suicides using poison, suffocation and jumping. The suicide ("suicidio") topic presents s

Does Context Matter? Examining PRISM as a Guiding Framework for Context-Specific Health Risk Information Seeking Among Young Adults.

Research indicates that when people seek health information, they typically look for information about a specific symptom, preventive measure, disease, or treatment. It is unclear, however, whether general or disease-specific theoretical models best predict how people search for health information. We surveyed undergraduates (N = 963) at a large public southeastern university to examine health information seeking in two incongruent health contexts (sexual health and cancer) to test whether a general model would hold for specific topics that differed in their immediate personal relevance for th

"Wish I Would Have Known that before I Started Using It": Contraceptive Messages and Information Seeking among Young Women.

In recent decades, women's use of contraception has evolved. Women not only utilize contraceptives to prevent pregnancy, but also to manage menstruation and other factors related to their personal agency. Despite an abundance of available contraceptive options, many women struggle to navigate and address their contraceptive needs. A hundred and thirty-four female participants responded to an open-ended questionnaire about contraceptive messages and decision making in an online survey. Using Uncertainty Management Theory as a framework, we illustrate how the women make sense of and manage uncer

Online Health Seeking Behaviours: What Information Is Sought by Women Experiencing Miscarriage?

One in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage, a distressing event which can cause significant psychosocial impacts for many women, and yet often remains unseen and unspoken. Many would-be mothers turn to the internet for information and emotional support, and to share their experiences. In this paper, we present the results from 12 semi-structured interviews with women, investigating how and what online information they searched for at the time of miscarriage. We found that women are passive information seekers, searching for causes and preventive strategies to inform future pregnancies. Women
