Steatocystoma simplex is a rare entity characterized by the presence of a solitary cutaneous cyst derived from a sebaceous duct or gland. Multiple locations of this lesion have been reported previously. The purpose of this article is to report the unusual presentation of steatocystoma simplex as an infratemporal fossa mass. To the best of our knowledge, no case of steatocystoma simplex at this site has been previously reported. We also describe the radiologic and pathologic features of this entity, which might aid in diagnosis and management, and we discuss its etiology and treatment options.

OBJECTIVES: To describe an unusual location for a common benign salivary gland neoplasm.
STUDY DESIGN: Case report and literature review.
METHODS: We describe an unusual lesion found in the infratemporal fossa on computed tomography of the facial skeleton, including the clinical presentation, workup, and surgical approach. A complete PubMed search of atypical presentations of pleomorphic adenoma was performed. The literature was also reviewed for all neoplasms involving the infratemporal fossa, pterygomaxillary fissure, and pterygopalatine fossa.
RESULTS: Pleomorphic adenoma has been report

BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal sinusitis is a progressive disease that can often extend beyond the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses into surrounding soft tissue and bone. Aggressive antifungal therapy and surgical debridement are the mainstays of management. The pterygopalatine fossa and infratemporal fossa are two regions that are commonly involved in patients with invasive fungal sinusitis. When fungal disease extends to the infratemporal fossa, surgical debridement can be challenging. Traditionally, open approaches have been used for the management of disease in these areas. Jugular fossa tumors are uncommon diseases. During the surgery and due to the interposition of the facial nerve in the tumor approach, the facial nerve must be elevated from the fallopian canal and placed permanently into an anterior position. Although this maneuver provides a wide exposure, most of the patients suffer a long-term total or partial facial palsy. The purpose of this article is to check whether the infratemporal fossa approach without transposition of the facial nerve is equivalent to the approach with rerouting of the facial nerve regarding postsurgical morbidity. The clinical r

We present a 38-year-old female with a giant dumbbell-shaped trigeminal neurinoma originating primarily in the middle cranial fossa, extending to the infratemporal and posterior fossae through the foramen ovale and Meckel's cave, respectively. Because of the large tumour extension into the Infratemporal Fossa, a combined skull base approach (zygomatic infratemporal - transmandibular) was utilised for tumour removal, with a subsequent excellent outcome. An extensive literature review since 1935, revealed 580 cases of surgically treated trigeminal neurinomas. Among these, only three were located

AIM: Removal of impacted third maxillary molar is frequently carried out without difficulties and low rate of intraoperative complications. The rare and particularly challenger to manage it is the third molar dislocation into the infratemporal fossa (IF). In this clinical report, the authors present their solution to manage and resolve this particular complication.
METHODS: A 28-year-old woman was referred to the emergency rescue unit of the authors' hospital by her dentistry, after the attempt to extract the left impacted maxillary third molar. During the procedure the tooth accidentally dis

OBJECTIVE: To determine the proper indications (and thus define good candidates) for the infratemporal fossa approach (ITFA) in the treatment of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).
DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of 11 consecutive patients who had recurrent NPC after radiation therapy failure and were treated with curative surgery via the ITFA approach from July 1, 1993, to November 20, 1999. The mean follow-up was 32.5 months (range, 9-56 months).
SETTING: Academic tertiary referral center.
RESULTS: Patients who had a recurrent tumor confined to the Rosenmüller fossa (rT1; n = 3) or e

BACKGROUND: Lateral approaches have traditionally been used to gain access to lesions of the infratemporal fossa (ITF). However, dysfunction of the facial nerve secondary to its translocation, conductive hearing loss, and dental malocclusion because of mandibular head resection or dislocation are significant limitations associated with some of these approaches. Although facial nerve translocation and extended maxillotomy approaches avoid some of these drawbacks, they are invasive and require extensive osteotomies and facial incisions. To avoid these potential complications and maintain an extr

OBJECT: In this paper the authors' goal was to present their clinical experience with lesions of the pterygopalatine fossa, infratemporal fossa, lateral sphenoid sinus, cavernous sinus, petrous apex, and Meckel cave using simple and extended endoscopic transpterygoid approaches to the lateral skull base.
METHODS: Simple and expanded endoscopic transpterygoid approaches were performed in a series of 13 patients with varying pathology that included lateral sphenoid sinus encephaloceles, benign and malignant sinonasal tumors, and lesions of neural origin.
RESULTS: A gross-total resection was ac

INTRODUCTION: Buccal mucosa cancers are the most prevalent oral cavity cancers in South Asia, often attributed to widespread tobacco use. The current NCCN guidelines generally advise against primary surgery for locally very advanced (cT4b) buccal cancers involving the masticatory space and infratemporal fossa (ITF). However, some surgeons have adopted an aggressive surgical approach for T4b oral squamous cell carcinoma, involving composite resections and ITF clearance.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective analytical survival study of 91 patients with very locally advanced buccal muc

Proliferative myositis (PM) is a rare lesion in the head and neck region. It may mimic a malignant lesion. Therefore, it should be considered in differential diagnosis of swelling with pain and rapid growth. Here, the authors present the first case of proliferative myositis involving muscles of the infratemporal fossa in a 2-year-old child and a literature review of PM cases in the head and neck region.

BACKGROUND: The infratemporal fossa, nestled deep within a complex network of vital nerves and blood vessels, presents a formidable challenge to neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, and maxillofacial surgeons alike.
IMPORTANCE: Surgery is the main treatment method for lesions in the infratemporal fossa area. While traditional surgery is fraught with significant trauma, complexity, and a high rate of complications, the neuroendoscopic anterior prelacrimal recess technique offers a less invasive alternative, minimizing damage to the nasal cavity's architecture.

INTRODUCTION: Soft tissue injuries are known complications of orthodontic treatment. Most of the injuries are mild, but severe complications can arise from deeper penetration or dislodgement of brackets and other foreign bodies into the surrounding tissues of the oropharynx and infratemporal fossa.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient, accompanied by his parents, presented to the Children's Emergency Department with the concern of gradual limitation of mouth opening and eventual trismus, which occurred over a span of 2 weeks.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: The patient presented with trismus and slight discomfo

OBJECTIVES: The parapharyngeal space (PPS) and infratemporal fossa (ITF) present significant challenges for endoscopic skull base surgery due to their complex anatomy and lack of clear bony landmarks. This study aims to propose a systematic compartmentalization of the PPS and ITF, based on key anatomical structures, to optimize surgical planning and approaches.
METHODS: To retain a precise bony reference framework, the walls of the maxillary sinus and pterygoid bone were preserved. Anatomical dissection was conducted along muscular planes, dividing the region into 3 spaces. The feasibility an

BACKGROUND: This report presented the case of a difficult-to-remove needle foreign body. The patient had a dental procedure in which a 30-gauge needle was lost in the gingival buccal sulcus. Several attempts at removal were unsuccessful. The patient presented to the otolaryngology clinic with trismus, pain with mastication, intermittent right otalgia, and numbness of the right cheek.
METHODS: The needle was finally localized in the infratemporal fossa and removed by using image guidance technology.
RESULTS: This case demonstrated an approach to a difficult-to-locate foreign body removal and

Giant cell tumors (GCT) of the bone are uncommon primary bone neoplasms that occur mainly in the epiphyses of long bones. However, GCT with tumoral growth in the cranium is rarely encountered, particularly in the temporal bone. GCT demonstrates benign histological features but is locally aggressive, and surgical excision is the treatment of choice. The authors describe a 31-year-old man who presented with trismus and an extensive GCT, which originated in the petrous and squamous portions of the temporal bone and extended into the left mandibular ramus and middle ear. He was treated by en bloc

Objective Access to the pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae presents a significant surgical challenge, owing to their deep-seated location and complex neurovascular anatomy. This study elucidates the benefits of incremental medial maxillectomies to access this region. We compared access to the medial aspect of the infratemporal fossa provided by medial maxillectomy, anteriorly extended medial maxillectomy, endoscopic Denker approach (i.e., Sturmann-Canfield approach), contralateral transseptal approach, and the sublabial anterior maxillotomy (SAM). Methods We studied 10 cadaveric specimen
